P-CI

P-PI

P2-P3

Possible answers::

Pilot. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. "British Airways" are glad to meet you. I'm your pilot, Mr. Smith, and I wish you a pleasant flight.

Stewardess 1. Let me introduce myself. I'm Miss Flint, a stewardess, and this is Miss Dove. Welcome to our plane. Our flight lasts 6 hours and we'll land in Edinburgh at 12 o'clock. The speed of the plane is 700 km/hour. The height is 2.000 metres. The temperature outside is 12 degrees below zero. The temperature aboard is 20 degrees above zero. "British Airways" wish you a pleasant flight.

Tourist 1. Is this your first visit to Scotland?

Tourist 2. No, it isn't. I was in Scotland several years ago. And what about you?

Tourist 1. Oh, it's my-first visit. Scotland is the country of my dream.

Tourist 2. Really?

Tourist 1. Don't be so sarcastic! It's my dream to see Nessie.

Tourist 2. Nessie the monster? You are so imaginative?!

Tourist 1.1 don't think so, but mysterious creatures always attract me.

Tourist 3. Look, look! We are flying above the sea.

Tourist 4. It's not the sea. It's La-Manche and English people call it the English Channel.

Tourist 6. It's impossible, darling.

Tourist 5. But 1 want...

Tourist 6. Stop crying, please. You can't see the Hadrian's Wall, but you can listen to the stewardess' story.

Stewardess 1. We are flying above the United Kingdom. Many centuries ago Great Britain was conquered by the Romans. But they couldn't conquer Scotland. The Romans called it Caledonia — the country of the wild. They built the Hadrian's Wall in order to separate Roman territories from Scotland. If our plane flew lower, we could see the famous Hadrian's Wall. It was built nearly two thousand years ago by the Roman emperor Hadrian. In the Middle Ages Scotland became a united country. There were wars, between England and Scotland. Tn 1603 the Scottish king, James VI became the king of England and a century later Scotland and England were united.

Tourist 7. What are you reading about?

Tourist 8. It's about the customs and traditions of the United Kingdom.

Tourist 7. Is there anything interesting about Scotland?

Tourist 8. To my mind the most exciting is about the thistle.

Tourist 7. Really?

Tourist 8. Don't you know that thistle is the national emblem of Scotland?

Tourist 7.1 think everybody knows this. But Г don't remember the legend. Would you tell it?

Tourist 8. Certainly, with pleasure. Listen. "In very ancient times the Norsemen landed on the east of Scotland. They wanted to settle in the country. Scots waited for the enemy behind the river Tay, the largest river in Scotland. As they arrived late, they didn't expect the enemy before the next day. The Norsemen were near. They crossed the Tay, intending to take Scots by surprise in their sleep. For this, they took off their shoes so as to make the least noise possible. But one of the Norsemen stepped on the thistle. He cried of sharp pain. The alarm was given. The Norsemen were put to fight. For this help the Scots made thistle their national emblem".

Tourist 7. It's too good to be true.

Tourist 8. God knows.

Stewardess 2. Ladies and gentlemen! Our plane is about to land in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. We ask you to fasten your seat-belts. Stop smoking and don't leave your seats until the final stop of the plane. Our plane will arrive exactly on time and your guide is waiting for you in the airport.

Guide. Welcome to Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Our town is called the open air museum. While we are going to the hotel, I invite you to a bus tour around the city.

c) Watching and Listening.

TCI

T - PI, P2, P3...

T. We are in the capital of the country. I think you are lucky because you are going to see a lot of places of interest, among them: Edinburgh, Workshops of Bagpipes, The Royal Mile, The Palace of Holyroodhouse, King Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh Castle, The Firth of Forth.

(The pupils express their attitude - great, nice, fine, interesting, etc.)

T. Video "Edinburgh" will help you to make the excursion alive. Here is our route. While watching the film try to arrange these places of interest in alogical order.

Edinburgh (Content of  the   film "Introducing Great Britain", Longman)

Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is one of Britain's most attractive cities.

It is a city for people who like to walk. You are never far from green parks, gardens and

hills even in the main shopping streets. It's a busy modern city, but history is everywhere. On the top of the highest hill in Edinburgh there is Edinburgh Castle. Soldiers have marched through its gates for nearly a thousand years. It was the home of Scotland's royal family until the year 1603 when King James the Sixth of Scotland became king of England as well and went south to live in London. (Pause)

This famous road is called the Royal Mile. It begins at the castle and goes eastwards. Off the Royal Mile yo"u can explore old narrow streets on foot. You'll find some interesting shops.

The kilt, the most important part of Scotland's national dress, is made from tartan cloth. To make a kilt it takes eight metres of tartan cloth. Kilts are worn by men and women, but a man's kilt has a pocket made from leather and silver. It's worn in front and is called a sporran. For a souvenir, how about a tartan hat? Or perhaps a useful umbrella?

Bagpipes — the national instrument of Scotland. In this workshop, craftsmen make wooden pipes. The bag is made of leather and covered in tartan.

Customer in bagpipe shop: Aye. Very nice. Lovely. I'll take it.

Shopkeeper: Right. (Pause)

At the other end of the Royal Mile is the Palace of Holyroodhouse. It was built by a Scottish king before Scotland and England were united to make Great Britain. Now Holyroodhouse is a second home for the British king or queen, who usually visit Edinburgh in summer. When the royal family is not there, you can visit the palace. You can see the staterooms and walk around the gardens and the ruins of the abbey, a much older building. (Pause)

Behind the Holyroodhouse is one of the Edinburgh's nine hills. This one is a long-dead volcano; it's called King Arthur's Seat. (Pause)

From the top you can look northwards to the great river, the Firth of Forth, and the road bridge which crosses it. The road bridge is modern, but the rail bridge is quite old. It has carried trains to the Highlands for more than a hundred years.
