HOW PENGUINS CAME ON AN ISLAND

11. The poor men grew very thin and weak. They were beginning to lose all hope of life, when great flocks of penguins came to the beach. Now the sailors could get a lot of penguin eggs which were good to eat. So the penguins saved their lives. The penguins stayed for about three months; when their young ones could swim, they all disappeared one night in the direction of the south.

THE PAINTER

On 25 October 1881 a little boy was born in Malaga, Spain. It was a difficult birth and to help him breathe, cigar smoke was blown into his nose! But despite being the youngest ever smoker, this baby grew up to be one of the 20th century’s greatest painters – Pablo Picasso.

Picasso showed his truly exeptional talent from a very young age. He learned to draw before he could talk. He was the only son in the family and very good-looking, so he was thoroughly spoilt. He hated school and often refused to go unless his doting parents allowed him to take one of his father’s pet pigeons with him!

Apart from pigeons, his great love was art, and when in 1891 his father, who was an amateur artist, got a job as a drawing teacher at a college, Pablo went with him to the college. He often watched his father paint and sometimes was allowed to help. One evening his father was painting a picture of their pigeons when he had to leave the room. He returned to find that Pablo had completed the picture, and it was so amazingly beautiful that he gave his son his own palette and brushes and never painted again. Pablo was just 13.

From then onwards there was no stopping him. Many people realized that he was a genius but he disappointed those who wanted him to become a traditional painter. He was always breaking rules of artistic tradition and shocked the public with his strange and powerful pictures. He is probably best known for his “Cubist” pictures, which used only simple geometric shapes.

Pablo created over 6000 paintings, drawings and sculptures. Today a “Picasso” costs several million pounds. Once, when the French Minister of Culture was visiting Picasso, the artist accidentally split some paint on the Minister’s trousers, Picasso apologized and wanted to pay for them to be cleaned, but the Minister said, “Non! Please, Monsieur Picasso, just sign my trousers!”

Picasso died of heart failure during an attack of influenza in 1973. Dictionaries are not allowed

Text 4: In Washington, D. C., 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is a very special address. It is the

address of the White House, the home of the president of the United states. Originally the White House was gray and was called the Presidential Palace. It was built from 1792 to 1800. At this time, the city of Washington itself was being built. It was to be the nation’s new capital city. George Washington, the first president, and Pierre Charles L’Enfant, a French engineer, chose the place for the new city. L’Enfant then planned the city. The president’s home was an important part of the plan. A contest was held to pick a design for the president’s home. An architect named James Hoban won. He designed a large three-story house of gray stone.

President Washington never lived in the Presidential Palace. The first president to live there was John Adams, the second president of the United States, and his wife. Mrs. Adams did not really like her new house. In her letters, she often complained about the cold. Fifty fireplaces were not enough to keep the house warm! In 1812 the United States and Britain went to war. In 1814 the British invaded Washington. They burned many buildings, including the Presidential Palace. After the war James Hoban, the original architect, partially rebuilt the president’s home. To cover the marks of the fire, the building was painted white. Before long it became known as the White House. The White House is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States. Every year more than 1.5 million visitors go through the five rooms that are open to the public.

LISTENING COMPREHENSION TASKS

Stress

Stress is important. We all need a certain amount of it in order to lead fulfilling lives. However, if we have too much of it, it can have the opposite effect. Some people can tolerate greater levels of stress than others, but most of us will experience it at some time in our lives. It is therefore a good idea to learn a few stress management techniques. Mecca

Mecca is a city of about 200,000 inhabitants in Saudi Arabia, and lies about 40 miles east of Jeddah, which is its port on the Red Sea. It is the birthplace of Muhammad and the greatest place of pilgrimage in the whole Islamic world. It is estimated that each year more than 100,000 pilgrims go to Mecca, so increasing its tourist industry. This also encourages the development of numerous small industries and craftsmen’s workshops that produce leather goods and silverware to sell to the pilgrims. Mecca has always been an important crossroads for trade and although it was a religious center before the rise of Islam, both its religious and economic importance grew as a result of the new faith. The town is impressively constructed and extends down the valley along roads which are unusually wide for an Arab city. Its religious life is centered in the Great Mosque.

Mandy Goes Shopping

Mandy was so bored one afternoon that she decided to go shopping. She always took such pleasure in buying things for herself that she would often spend lots of money in just one day. She set out feeling really excited. After two hours she had bought so many things that she could hardly carry them all. The shops were closing and there was so much traffic in the streets that she could not find a taxi. She started feeling frustrated as the bags she was carrying were getting in everyone’s way. She was very anxious to get home, so she decided to take the underground. She took such a long time to find her purse among her things that people waiting behind her started muttering. When she finally found it, there was so little money that she didn’t have enough to buy a ticket. Mandy was so embarrassed that she just wanted to disappear. She left the station not knowing what to do. “I’ve spent so much money,” she thought, “that I’ve made a fool of myself in front of complete strangers.” Mandy eventually got home with all of her shopping bags after getting a ride from a pizza delivery truck. That day she decided that she’d never again over-spend while shopping.

The Power of the Mind

Scientists have recently become interested in strange psychological powers. A professor at Edinburgh University is leading an investigation into the most mysterious aspect of the brain’s abilities. He has chosen a controversial and surprising subject- telepathy. Direct mind-to-mind communication is when one person knows what another is thinking. Many people have doubts that this is really a scientific subject, and the professor’s work has only recently received recognition. He believes that telepathy is a natural talent, but that some people are able to do it more easily than others. However, most people still believe that it involves some kind of dishonesty or trickery.

A Letter to a Friend

Dear George,

I’ve just returned from America after spending the summer working with children at a camp for the blind. I traveled to the United States by airplane and while I was on the plane I met some other people going to work at the camp. There were Germans and Italians and also some people from the Netherlands. However, it was the French who were the most noticeable nationality as there were so many of them. Once I arrived, most of my time was spent arranging activities such as music, sports, and crafts. The children learned to play guitar, to practice swimming, and even to speak French. Once the camp was over, I spent some time traveling. My favorite sights were the Grand Canyon and Lake

Michigan. I also visited the Empire State Building and I loved Disneyland. I had a great time, and I hope to do the same thing next summer after I’ve finished university.

THE ARTIST

People think being an artist must be a wonderful way to earn one’s living. And of course, there are lots of great things about working for oneself, at home alone, even in a cold studio like mine. What I really like is that nobody tells me what time to start in the morning. I like to paint as soon as I wake up, which is always early, but isn’t the same time every day.
