The Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon rainforest is the largest rainforest in the world. It is in South America and covers parts of nine countries, including Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. The Amazon is sometimes called “the lungs of the Earth” because it produces about 20 percent of the world’s oxygen. Thousands of plants and animals live there, many of which cannot be found anywhere else. For example, the Amazon river dolphin lives only in this part of the world.

The Amazon River is also one of the longest rivers on Earth. It is about 6,400 kilometres long and carries more water than any other river. Local people use the river for transport, food, and water. The rainforest is very important for the whole planet, but today it is in danger. People cut down too many trees, and animals lose their homes. Scientists and organisations around the world are trying to protect the Amazon because without it the Earth’s climate could change.
