Josh: Hey, I hear you and Stephanie are really getting serious.

Michael: Yeah, I think she'll be impressed with my new exercise program.

Josh: What? What are you talking about? What exercise program? What did you tell her?

Michael: Well, you know, I enjoy staying in shape.  First, I generally get up every morning at 5:30 a.m.

Josh: Oh, yeah. Since when? You don't roll out of bed until at least 7:30 p.m.

Michael: No, no, and on Mondays and Wednesdays,

Josh: Ah, not another magic tale . . .

Michael: I almost always go jogging for about a half hour, you know..

Josh: Hey, jogging to the refrigerator for a glass of milk doesn't count.

Michael: Of course, before I leave, I usually make sure I do some stretches so I don't pull a muscle on my run.

Josh: Right. One jumping jack.

Michael: Then, I told her that I usually lift weights Tuesdays and Thursdays for about an hour after work.

Josh: Humph.

Michael: This really helps me build muscle strength.

Josh: A one-pound barbell.

Michael: Finally, I often go hiking on Saturdays with my dog , well, and I like hiking because it helps me burn off stress and reduce anxiety that builds up during the week.

Josh: Oh yeah, those lies.

Michael: Well, uh, as for Fridays, I sometimes just relax at home by watching a movie or inviting you over to visit.

Josh: If I buy the pizza.

Michael: But . . . And on Sundays, I take the day off from exercising, but I usually take my dog for a walk.

Josh: Forget it.

Things boys play with are not like objects girls play with. Boys often have more freedom to run about and they get guns, train sets, toy trucks and toy cars. Electronic games are very popular among young boys. Toys for girls are much quieter and more passive. Young girls often get things like dolls, dresses, and pictures to colour.

2.

“Teddies” are an important part of British culture. Most people in Britain have a teddy bear when they are young, and most people are very fond of their special bear, even when they are 30 or 40 years old! Many famous people like film stars or pop stars or politicians collect “teddies”. These people have donated their old friends to the teddy bear  museum which is in Stratford-on-Avon in England. Many tourists go to this place, because it is the birthplace of Shakespeare, but they often love the teddy bear museum more.

3.

Computer games are a multimillion dollar industry, but people who really enjoy games are not satisfied with playing against the computer. They want to play against real people and most computer games allow you to do that just by joining up with other players on the Internet. Regular players say that this is where their true enjoyment of games can be found. With some games up to 60 people can take part. It's a good way to meet people and it gives you something to talk about.

Sunraycer has just taken part in a race against 25 solar-powered vehicles. Sunraycer covered the great distance in 45 hours at a speed of 41 miles an hour at temperatures as high as 48°C. It is certainly the car of the future.

5.

Computers are a great technological invention of the 20th century. Their advantages are numerous yet much can be said against them. The main disadvantage of computers is that looking at a screen for long periods of time is bad for the eyes, and sitting on a chair for hours is not healthy. Also, people who use computers have a tendency to become anti-social and stay at home. The strongest argument against the use of computers is that the more jobs which are done by computers, the less are done by people.

6.

Thirty years ago few people realized that computers were about to become part of our everyday lives. This short period of time has seen great changes in business, education and public administration. Jobs which took weeks to do in past, are now carried out in minutes. Schoolchildren have become as familiar with hardware and software as their parents were with pencils and exercise books and they don’t worry about mistakes having a computer.

7.

Generous granddad Martin Rossiter, from Macclesfield, has built a treehouse for his grandchildren – costing £35,000! The top-of-the-range two-storey treehouse features a series of rope walkways between the sycamores, oaks and pine trees in Martin’s garden and took builders five days to make. He plans to add running water, electricity and bunk beds to make it perfect play-den. Martin has 12 grandchildren – aged from 2 to12 – but the rest of his family believe he secretly made the house for himself!

What are some of the most common problems for which people go to a doctor when seeking medical advice and an examination? Do you ever look for medical advice or medication online?

Ronald: Uh, I drove past your office yesterday.

Receptionist: Okay. How about the day after tomorrow on Wednesday at 4:00 O'clock?

Ronald: Uh. Do you happen to have an opening in the morning? I usually pick up my kids from school around that time.

Receptionist: Okay. Um . . . how about Tuesday at 8:00 A.M. or Thursday at 8:15 A.M.?

Ronald: Uh, do you have anything earlier, like 7:30?

Ronald: It's 643-0547.

Receptionist: Alright. And what's the nature of your visit?

Ronald: Uh . . .

Receptionist: Yes sir.

Ronald: Well, to tell the truth, I fell from a ladder two days ago while painting my house, and I sprained my ankle when my foot landed in a paint can. I suffered a few scratches on my hands and knees, but I'm most concerned that the swelling in my ankle hasn't gone down yet.

Receptionist: Well, did you put ice on it immediately after this happened?

Ronald: Well yeah. I just filled the paint can with ice and . . .

Receptionist: And so after you removed the paint can . . . Sir, sir, Mr. Schuller, are you still there?

Ronald: Well that's part of the problem. Uh, the paint can is still on my foot.

Receptionist: Look, Mr. Schuller. Please come in today. I don't think your case can wait.

Digging for the past

1. A group of university students from Brazil have been given the job of discovering and locating all the waterfalls in their country. It is not easy because very often the maps are not detailed. The students have to remain in water for long periods of time. Every day they cover a distance of 35 to 40 kilometers through the jungle, each carrying 40 kilos of equipment.

2. For many years now, mail-order shopping has served the needs of a certain kind of customers. Everything they order from a catalogue is delivered to their door. Now, though, e-mail shopping on the Internet has opened up even more opportunities for this kind of shopping.

3. Another generation of computer fans has arrived. They are neither spotty schoolchildren nor intellectual professors, but pensioners who are learning computing with much enthusiasm. It is particularly interesting for people suffering from arthritis as computers offer a way of writing nice clear letters. Now pensioners have discovered the Internet and at the moment they make up the fastest growing membership.

4. Shopping centres are full of all kinds of stores. They are like small, self-contained towns where you can find everything you want. In a large centre, shoppers can find everything they need without having to go anywhere else. They can leave their cars in the shopping centre car park and buy everything in a covered complex, protected from the heat, cold or rain.

5. Not many people know that, back in the fifties, computers were very big, and also very slow. They took up complete floors of a building, and were less powerful, and much slower than any of today’s compact portable computers. At first, the data they had to process and record was fed in on punched-out paper; later magnetic tape was used, but both systems were completely inconvenient.

6. Potholing is a dull name for a most interesting and adventurous sport. Deep underground, on the tracks of primitive men and strange animals who have adapted to life without light, finding unusual landscapes and underground lakes, the potholer lives an exciting adventure. You mustn’t forget, though, that it can be quite dangerous. Without the proper equipment you can fall, get injured or lost.

7. Substantial remains of an octagonal Roman bath house, probably reused as a Christian baptistry, have been uncovered during a student training excavation near Faversham in Kent. The central cold plunge pool was five metres across, and stood within a structure which also had underfloor heating and hot pools, probably originally under a domed roof.
