The History of Foreign Cinema

The history of film is an account of the historical development of the medium known variously as cinema, motion pictures, film, or the movies. The invention of the photography in 1828 played a very important role in the development of the cinema. 1895 became the year when the cinema was born. After the brothers Lumier from France had invented the cinematography, the cinema widely spread all over the world. The first movie theatres appeared in 1904. And in 1907 the literature works started to be widely used for the movie scripts.

Most films before 1930 were silent. One of the greatest and widely loved silent movie stars was Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin, who was an English comic actor, film director and composer. He gained popularity in the world before the end of World War I. He brought into a war-torn world the gift of comedy, laughter and relief, that people needed the most. He made many of the funniest and most popular films of his time. He was best known for his character, the naive and lovable Little Tramp - a well meaning man in a raggedy suit with cane, who always got into awkward situations.

The cinema of the United States, also known as Hollywood, has had a profound effect on cinema across the world since the early 20th century. Since the 1920s, the American film industry has grossed more money every year than that of any other country. The silent era of films was stopped with the appearance of  The Jazz Singer increasing profits from films as sound was introduced to feature films.

During the so-called Golden Age of Hollywood, in the 20th century, thousands of movies were issued from the Hollywood studios, among them-The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, Mary Poppins, The Sound of music, The Godfather,  King Kong, Star Wars, Bonnie and Clyde, Jaws, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, The Terminator, Titanic. These films are considered to be the most commercially successful movies of the 20th century in the world.
