        Dear Tim,

        Dear Rebecca,

Thanks (a lot) for your (last) letter.

Your last letter was a real surprise.

I was glad to get your letter.

It was great to hear from you! / It was great to hear that…/ I was happy to hear…

Sorry I haven’t written for so long but…/ Sorry I haven’t been in touch for so long.

I’m sorry I haven’t answered earlier but I was really busy with my school.

I’m glad you passed your History test!

Sounds like you had a great time in London!

        Great news about your…!

Предполагается, что письмо должно быть написано в неформальном стиле, поэтому вы можете использовать неформальные слова-связки, такие как well, by the way, anyway, so, разговорные выражения типа Guess what?

Well, I’d better go now, as I have to do my homework.

Anyway, I have to go now because my Mum asked me to help her with the washing up.

I’ve got to go now! It’s time for my favourite TV show.

        Write (back) soon!

Take care and keep in touch!

Drop  me a letter when you can.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Task 1. You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen friend Steve who writes

                                November 10th, 2008

Dear Steve,

Thanks a lot for your letter. I’m glad your sister got married. How are you getting on with her husband? Is he a student? What kind of music does he enjoy?

In your letter you asked me about the reading habits in my family. Well, my father often reads newspapers and magazines. He thinks that it is the only way to be in the know of everything. And my mother is keen on reading about the life of well-known people.

As for me, I enjoy reading detective stories because they have interesting story lines and unusual endings. I am practically captivated by characters that conduct investigations.

Actually, I’d better go now as I’ve got loads of homework to do tonight. Write soon!

        All the best,

  1. Не используйте сокращенные формы, такие как don’t или can’t;
  2. Не используйте скобки и восклицательные знаки – это свойственно неформальному стилю письма;
  3. Не начинайте предложения со слов and, but или also; в разговорном языке вы можете их использовать, но избегайте этого в формальном сочинении;
  4. Не употребляйте вводные слова, характерные для неформального стиля (well, you know и т. д.);

Task 1. Comment on the following statement.

Some people enjoy living in big cities but others find such a lifestyle really harmful.

What can you say for and against living in a big city? Which way of life do you find more satisfying?

Write 200-250 words.

Use the following plan:

  1. make an introduction (state the problem)
  2. give arguments “for”
  3. give arguments “against”
  4. draw a conclusion based on the given arguments

Nowadays lots of young people tend to move to cities in search of better life. On the contrary, many adults consider such a lifestyle quite dangerous for their children. Who is right? Is the life in the city really as harmful as it may seem?

On the one hand, city life has lots of advantages. For example, it is often easier to get prestigious education and to find a well-paid job. Besides, there is a wider choice of shops, sports facilities and health centers. What is more, if you live in the city, you can eat in good restaurants, visit museums, and go to the theatres or concerts. All in all, city lifestyle is full of variety so you will never feel bored.

On the other hand, we must admit that city life is rather unsafe as there is a lot of crime and violence. What is more, transport and industry are the main reasons for all kinds of pollution therefore city dwellers often have more problems with their health. Last of all, young people living in cities are likely to acquire such bad habits as smoking, drinking alcohol or even taking drugs.

In conclusion, I think that city life has its pros and cons. However, if we try and solve the problems of crime and pollution, then living in the city will be really enjoyable. As for me, I would prefer to live in the city because I am keen on visiting theatres and don’t mind noise and pollution.       – 251 words.

Essay “My opinion”

done by Chernyavka Anya, 10 A, 2012

Topic: “Christmas. It’s time to make your relatives and friends happy”.

It’s a common knowledge, that Christmas Day is a great Christian holiday, celebrated on January 7. Children and adults all over the world enjoy celebrating Christmas. This holiday is very important for those people who want to be together with friends and parents, and share joyful emotions. Though there is an opinion that on Christmas holiday people waste a lot of money on unnecessary things. I can’t share this view.

First of all, I think, it’s a great holiday, full of kindness, love and magic. Yes, the magic! Because on this day all dreams and withes come true! When people try to do pleasant things to each other such as writing greeting cards, they act like sending direct messages to heaven and wishing their nearest and dearest much health and wealth.

Secondly, small children look forward to Christmas, because they believe, that Father Frost will come and give them the best present! As for me, I enjoy Christmas preparation. For example, I love to buy gifts for my family and friends, and put these presents under the decorated Christmas tree. It’s fun.

However, some people do not like this holiday. Maybe they do not like the pre-holiday bustle. Such as running to the shops, cooking and other worries. They consider all those things unimportant and boring. I can’t agree with them, because I like the atmosphere of a coming holiday.

Finally, I would like to say, that Christmas is a wonderful time to be together with your relatives and friends, and a great opportunity to make each other happy and merry!

Essay “My opinion”

done by Epishenkova Elizaveta, 10 A, 2012

Topic: “Christmas. It’s time to make your relatives and friends happy”.

Christmas is an annual Christian holiday. Catholics celebrate it on December 25 and Orthodox on January 7. Around the world children are looking forward to this day and rejoice when it comes. However, not all people are rejoicing Christmas. So what can be wrong with this fabulous time?

First, Christmas is the most magical time of the year. It’s so nice to walk around the city decorated with colorful lights. Second, all people have a good mood, because Christmas is a day when families get together and give each other gifts and holiday cards.

Yet nothing can be perfect. Some people have to wait in lines too much time and waste too much money on gifts that they cannot enjoy the holiday. Though Christmas is a time for miracles, not all desires fulfill in just one night and sometimes you don’t get what you want.

I cannot share this opinion, because I think that despite some disadvantages, Christmas still remains one of the few holidays when you can meet and enjoy a good time with friends. It’s a great chance to meet with the loved ones who live far enough and who are not able to arrive during week days.

All in all, I am sure that Christmas is the most vivid holiday of the year, making people happy.
