  1. Warming-up.
  1. A) The teacher greets students and starts out a short dialogue:

T.: -How are you today?

-I see P2 is not smiling. Is he/she in a high or low mood?

-Are you in a low mood?

B) The teacher draws attention on ’mood cards’ (HO1) and asks students to mark their mood at the beginning of the lesson:

T.: -Please, write your first and second name on the card and put the mark below the proper ‘smile’. Thank you.

     2. The teacher asks students to make promises for the lesson (HO2):

T.: -Children, I want you to make promises for the lesson. I’d like to start. I promise I will encourage you during the lesson.

-Choose any promise from the card and read it aloud.

T.: -Students watch a short slide-show, please, and try to guess what our topic for discussion is.

-You are quite right. The topic for discussion is ‘Environment and Nature Protection’.

-Ecological problems have become global nowadays. So, it is important to increase our knowledge of environmental needs. If we are active participants in the protection and rebuildment of our environment we will be able to help our planet to survive and keep it healthy for future generations.

        A)  -What is environment?

Sample:      *Environment means simply what is around us.

-What words do you associate with it? Let’s make a mind map.

                  Sample:

animals     land

weather

the Earth

radiation

ENVIRONMENT

plants

climate

water

       litter     air

B) Work with quotes.

T.: -Look at the quotations on the screen. Read and translate them.

-Do you agree with these words?

Quotes:

1) “The nation that destroys its soil destroys itself” (Franklin Roosevelt).

2)”Look after this planet; it’s the only one we have” (Prince Philip of Britain).

II. Main part.

T.: -We are caretakers of the Earth. You, young people, must be aware of the harm being done to the Earth: destroying rainforests, causing ozone holes, poisoning foodstuff, littering and polluting air and water.

        1. Vocabulary work. Pair work.

T.: -Let us enrich our vocabulary with some environmental words. Match them with their definitions. Work in pairs (HO3).

-Time’s up and we’re to look through the answers.

                A) Before listening.

T.: -Students we’ve got a message from the Earth. Listen to it, please.

  “Dear brothers and sisters,

Take care of me. Don’t cut the wild flowers. They may all disappear. Plant a tree a year.

Remember, from one oak a forest grows. It’s very simple. Never throw or break glass bottles. You’ll    damage the land. Take what you need from me. You are my parts.

So, your challenge is to restore an ecological balance and to keep me clean and healthy for future generations,

       Love, your Earth”.

B) After listening.

T.: - Children, please, mark what should and what shouldn’t we do about the Earth. (HO5)

      - Your time is up. Let’s look through your answers.

HO5 :

DOs

DON’Ts

  1. Cut the wild plants.

  1. Plant a tree a year.

  1. Throw or break glass bottles.

  1. Damage the land.

  1. Maintain the Earth clean.

  1. Restore an ecological balance.

        6. Personality Test.

                A) T.: - An ‘Environmentalist’ is a person who works toward protecting the environment from the destruction and pollution.

                           - I wonder whether you are environmentalists or not. Let’s do a personality test. Listen to the question and choose only one possible answer (HO6).

                B) - Now add up your scores.

                C) - Listen to the analysis, please.

  HO6 :

PERSONALITY TEST

DO YOU WORRY ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT?

1) Imagine you are on holiday abroad. You eat chocolate-covered sweets but there are no any rubbish bins to put their wrappers in. What do you do?

a) Keep the wrappers in your pocket until you see a bin.

b) Throw them on the ground. It’s not your fault there aren’t enough rubbish bins.

c) It depends. If there’s a lot of rubbish on the ground, you might “drop them accidentally”.

2) On the way home you are very thirsty. What do you buy?

a) Something in a non recyclable plastic bottle.

b) Something in a glass bottle or aluminum can.

c) Something in a carton.

3) Your walkman always needs new batteries. What do you do?

a) Buy re-chargeable batteries.

b) Put the old batteries in the bin and buy new ones.

c) Buy new ones and take the old ones to a recycling centre.

4) If you lived near a beach, how would you react if a fast food restaurant opened near the beach?

a) Be pleased but also worried about more rubbish on the beach.

b) Be pleased. Now you can eat burgers on the beach.

c) You never eat at fast food places because there is too much packaging.

5) You buy are a couple of things in a shop. When you pay, the cashier is about to put the things in plastic bag. What do you say?

a) “No, thank you”. (You have brought your own bag from home.)

b) Nothing. You let him/her put the things in the bag.

c) It depends if you can carry the things easily without a bag.

6) There are a couple of flies in your room. They are annoying you. What do you do?

a) Try to kill them with a newspaper.

b) Try to kill them with a horrible-smelling aerosol.

c) Hit the air with a newspaper so they leave you alone.

7) You are writing a letter to a good friend. You’ve made several mistakes and need to cross things out. What do you do?

a) Start the letter again on another piece of paper.

b) Continue writing; your friend will excuse your mistakes.

c) Continue to write but if you make any more mistakes, start again.

  Now add up your score:

                        Read the analysis.

a

b

c

7-10: You do not worry about the environment at all! You think pollution is someone else’s problem, not yours. You think recycling and saving energy resources are too time-consuming.

11-17: You care about the environment and you have some good habits which help save it. However, there are probably a few other things you could do.

18-21: You definitely care about the environment. You think about it when you make everyday decisions. If more people in the world were as good as you, the planet would have fewer problems.

        Ⅳ. Summing-up.

 A) T.: -We have covered a lot of material on the topic. I am sure that you are people trying to help our environment.

-Summarize and say what can make our world a better place, what are our duties (HO7).

HO7 :

What should we do to make the world a better place?

-We shouldn’t waste water. We’d better take a shower, not a bath, and turn off the shower as soon as you have finished.

-We have to save energy: turn off the lights when we leave the room, turn down the central heating.

-When possible, we should walk or ride a bike, or take a bus instead of a motorbike or a car.

-Litter is a big problem. We are not to throw old things away. It’s better to recycle them. In many countries there are recycling bins where you can put a paper, glass and metal cans.

-It would be a good thing if everyone planted a tree or some flowers a year. They use CO2 and produce oxygen([‘ɒ k s ɪ d ʒ ə n]-кислород).

                  B)   T.: -Please, Mark your mood at the end of the lesson.

        Ⅴ. Home assignment:

                * make a poster about pollution in our town.
