Horses How can the horses help us?

Слайд 5

Man harnessed animals to work on his behalf thousands of years ago: horses for hunting and carrying, oxen for ploughing. Man needed animals for tasks that required strenght and speed. In the west modern engineering has set free the huge shire horses bred for pulling heavy loads. Pit ponies, however, are still at work down some mines.

The camel is used as pack or riding animals. People value it for its wool, milk, skin and meat. It can easy walk on send. Sheep ( Ovis aries ) are quadrupedal , ruminant mammals typically kept as livestock. Numbering a little over one billion, domestic sheep are also the most numerous species of sheep. A male sheep is called a ram and a female sheep is called a ewe. Sheep are most likely descended from the wild mouflon of Europe and Asia. One of the earliest animals to be domesticated for agricultural purposes, sheep are raised for fleece, meat (lamb, hogget or mutton) and milk. A sheep's wool is the most widely used animal fiber, and is usually harvested by shearing. Ovine meat is called lamb when from younger animals and mutton when from older ones. Sheep continue to be important for wool and meat today, and are also occasionally raised for pelts, as dairy animals, or as model organism for science . Sheep husbandry is practised throughout the majority of the inhabited world, and has been fundamental to many civilizations. In the modern era, Australia, New Zealand, the southern and central South American nations, and the British Islands are most closely associated with sheep production . Use of the word sheep began in Middle English as a derivation of the Old English word scēap ; it is both the singular and plural name for the animal. A group of sheep is called a flock, herd or mob . Being a key animal in the history of farming, sheep have a deeply entrenched place in human culture, and find representation in much modern language and symbology . As livestock, sheep are most often associated with pastoral, Arcadian imagery. Sheep figure in many mythologies—such as the Golden Fleece—and major religions, especially the Abrahamic traditions. In both ancient and modern religious ritual, sheep are used as sacrificial animals.

Слайд 18

Pigs Fat and meat are very popular in Russia and Ukraine, aren`t they?

Слайд 19

With around 1 billion individuals alive at any time, the domesticated pig is one of the most numerous large mammals on the planet . The ancestor of the domesticated pig is the wild boar, which is one of the most numerous and widespread large mammals . Its many subspecies are native to all but the harshest climates of continental Eurasia and its islands and Africa as well, from Ireland and India to Japan and north to Siberia . Although it has been exterminated in some areas, its numbers are stable, or even increasing rapidly, in most of its native range . Long isolated from other pigs on the many islands of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, pigs have evolved into many different species, including wild boar, bearded pigs, and warty pigs. Humans have introduced pigs into Australia, North and South America, and numerous islands, either accidentally as escaped domestic pigs which have gone feral, or as wild boar. These have typically adapted well, and are increasing in number and broadening their range outside human control . Pigs are omnivores, which means that they consume both plants and animals. In the wild, they are foraging animals, primarily eating leaves, grasses, roots, fruits and flowers. In confinement pigs are fed mostly corn and soybean meal with a mixture of vitamins and minerals added to the diet. Because pigs are omnivores they make excellent pasture raised animals . Traditionally they were raised on dairy farms and called "mortgage lifters" due to their ability to use the excess milk as well as whey from cheese and butter making combined with pasture . Older pigs will consume three to five gallons of water per day . Domesticated pigs, called swine, are raised commercially for meat (generally called pork, hams, gammon or bacon), as well as for leather. Their bristly hairs are also used for brushes. Due to their common use as livestock, adult swine have gender specific names: the males are boars (or sometimes "hogs") and the females are sows . Young swine are called piglets or pigs . Pork is one of the most popular forms of meat for human consumption, accounting for 38% of worldwide meat production.

Cats Don`t you think that they are our truly friends?

Слайд 21

The domestic cat ( Felis catus or Felis silvestris catus ) is a small, usually furry, domesticated , and carnivorous mammal. It is often called the housecat when kept as an indoor pet. Cats are often valued by humans for companionship and their ability to hunt vermin and household pests . Cats are similar in anatomy to the other felids, with strong, flexible bodies, quick reflexes, sharp retractable claws, and teeth adapted to killing small prey. Cat senses fit a crepuscular and predatory ecological niche. Cats can hear sounds too faint or too high in frequency for human ears, such as those made by mice and other small animals. They can see in near darkness. Like most other mammals, cats have poorer color vision and a better sense of smell than humans . Despite being solitary hunters, cats are a social species, and cat communication includes the use of a variety of vocalizations(meowing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling and grunting) as well as cat- pheromones and types of cat-specific body language. Cats have a rapid breeding rate. Under controlled breeding, they can be bred and shown as registered pedigree pets, a hobby known as cat fancy. Failure to control the breeding of pet cats by neutering, and the abandonment of former household pets, has resulted in large numbers of feral cats worldwide, requiring population control. Since cats were cult animals in ancient Egypt, they were commonly believed to have been domesticated there , but there may have been instances of domestication as early as the Neolithic from around 9500 years ago (7500 BC ). A genetic study in 2007 concluded that domestic cats are descended from African wild cats ( Felis silvestris lybica ) c. 8000 BC, in the Near East . According to Scientific American , cats are the most popular pet in the world, and are now found almost every place where people live.
