Irina Zhlonkina:

Poem “Outer Space” ( by Carol Weston)

I look up from Earth and try to see

The planets looking back at me.

I gaze at bright and distant stars

And search for Mercury, Venus, Mars.

I squint at the Milky Way way up high

And look for Jupiter in the sky.

Where are Saturn, Uranus, Neptune?

They're far away, high like the moon.

A telescope would be the best

For spotting Pluto and the rest.

I look for planets in the sky.

Space crash.

BBC1 announced   on the 24th of April  in 1967: Russian pilot cosmonaut Komarov Vladimir Mikhaylovich  died in space crash.

The Soviet Union has announced the catastrophic failure of its latest space mission, with the crash of Soyuz 1 and the death of the cosmonaut on board.

Yurie  Nikolaev: Colonel Vladimir Komarov, 40, was the first known victim of a space flight. He was an experienced cosmonaut, on his second flight   he had completed all his experiments successfully before returning to Earth. But within seconds of landing, just after he re-entered the Earth's atmosphere, the strings of the parachute intended to slow  and the spaceship bumped with the Earth.

Irina Zhlonkina : The Soyuz 1 is known to be a new and heavier type of spacecraft, built as part of the Soviet attempt to land a man on the Moon, and Colonel Komarov was thought to be testing it when the disaster happened.

Artyom Strov: Soviet Government described him as "a loyal son of our motherland and a courageous explorer of space."

His ashes were buried in the Kremlin wall on the Red Square in Moscow  - one of the highest honours accorded to a Soviet citizen.

Nataliya Nikolaeva:

Honours

Before leaving the moon, Neil Armstrong's final task was to place a small package of memorial items to honor Komarov, Yuri Gagarin and the Apollo 1 astronaut Virgil Grissom.

Yurie  Nikolaev : The asteroid 1836 Komarov, discovered in 1971, a crater on the Moon, the military pilot school in Yeisk; streets and schools of different cities, for example in Star town, Ufa, Groznyi have been named in his honor.

Artyom Stroev : The asteroid and the cosmonaut inspired composer Brett Dean in writing a symphonic piece  in 2006. The piece is named 'Komarov's Fall' and can be found  in the Classics Album The Planets.

Dean, Brett: Komarov's Fall (2006)

Komarov’s wife, Valentina, was invited to speak to her husband from the control centre and it is their imagined farewell, in the midst of the drama of Komarov’s precarious situation, which inhabits the brief lyrical section in the middle of the piece.

The asteroid “1836 Komarov”, discovered in 1971, was named  in honor  of Vladimir Michaylovich Komarov.

Nataliya Nikolaeva: The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale's V.M. Komarov Diploma is named in his honor.

Artyom Stroev: The Estonian punk band Sõpruse Puiestee wrote a song  "Difficulty stands even between planets" in honour of Komarov. The recording was completed exactly 43 years after Komarov's death, on April 24, 2010.

Irina Zhlonkina: Accounts of Komarov's life and space career appeared in  2003  in the book “Fallen Astronauts” and  in  2007 in the  book “In the Shadow of the Moon”, both by Colin Burgess.

The Monument to Vladimir Komarov  is on Cosmonauts Alley in Moscow.

Yurie  Nikolaev: The monument to Vladimir Komarov is  on  the place of his death in the village Karasuk, Adamovskie district, Orenburg region.

Yurie  Nikolaev:    Poem “Our Special Earth”

Our Earth is very special,

As special as can be,

Though it's not the closest planet

To the Sun--that's Mercury.

It's not the hottest planet,

That's Venus--"Evening Star,"

It's  not the biggest planet,

That's Jupiter by far.

It's not the smallest planet,

That's Pluto--cold as ice,

'It's not famous for its reddish tint,

That's Mars--to be precise.

It's not a ball of gas like

Uranus and Neptune,

It has no rings like Saturn's,

It only has one moon.

But Earth's alive with animals,

With flowers, grass, and trees.

And best of all our special Earth

Is home to you and me.
