Doing the tasks correctly you can score as much as 60 points and participate in the second round of the competition that is take place at Elabuga Campus of Kazan Federal University, an invitation to which will be specially sent to your e-mail address!

Task One. (Total score – 15)

Read the text and put the verbs in brackets in the correct tense aspect form.

        Ask hundreds of people what they (1) (to do) on a certain day in August next year, or the year after, and there (3) (be) only one reply. School Now and Then

        Parents and teachers are always making (0) (compare) comparison between the time when they were (1) (child) and the present (2) (generate). They say everything was better than it is today, especially in (3) (educate). For example, they say they used to work much (4) (hard) in school, and that nowadays, we aren’t very interested. I (5) (agree), because we spend hours every day doing homework after our lessons or (6) (revise) for (7) (examine). I wonder if our parents really had to study so much after school every day. 1. As the saying goes, when there is a will, there is a way. People who aspire after something they like to do most become more successful in life than lotus-eaters. What do you think of it?

2. Nowadays some people believe that the best place for spending a holiday is some escapist hideout. Would you agree with them?

3. Extreme sports like gorge walking, bungee jumping, diving with sharks or ice-boating are popular with young people. Do you approve of their choice?

4. For many people eating out means eating junk food. What food do you prefer – home-cooked or prepared by a chef at a catering establishment?

5. Life was much calmer and less stressful before mobile phones and World Wide Web were invented. How is life for you now?

END OF ROUND ONE

        During the Second Round the contestants will have to fulfill 3 tasks (Total score – 40):

  1. Introducing themselves which is done orally and can be prepared at home beforehand. (Total score – 10)
  2. Listening – skim listening, selective listening and/or listening for detailed comprehension. (Total score – 10)
  3. Speaking on given topics which is done on the spot. The topics listed below are stated generally, you will be given a more concrete situation to enlarge on. (Total score – 20)
