Two coats of arms are displayed on this page. One of Zabaikalye and another of Chita town. What is what ? A) In the golden field there is an 8 edged fence, red and green and above it the red buffalo’s head with a silver tongue. The shield is crowned with a golden tower crown with Alexander’s ribbon. B) In the golden field there is a flying one headed red eagle with silver paws and the beak holding a bow and an arrow with silver feathers. Also the Chita’s coat of arms is placed on Zabaikalye’s coat of arms as the centre of the region.

Treasure Land The Chita Region occupies only 3% of the territory of Russia and its population makes only 1%,but the region’s significance in mineral resources and raw material complex of Russia is rather high. The history of the Chita Region is the history of mining industry of Russia. The region is rich in all minerals of the entire Mendeleev’s periodic table. The first silver and gold of Russia were extracted from the Trans-Baikal ores. Many districts here are still bearing names of the former smelteries (there were 16 of them!)-Alexandrovsky Zavod, Nerchinsky Zavod, Gazimursky Zavod.Undoubtedly mining industry has been and still is a core of the region’s economy. Read Text 2 and learn the beginning of the history of Chita. Chita was founded in 1653 by Pyotr Beketov on the banks of the river Chita for his cossack detachment. First, this settlement was named “the Ingoda winter hut” or Plotbischze with only 6 houses in it. Later in 1687 Chita was mentioned as New Sloboda and some specialists consider 1687 the year of Chita’s foundation. At the beginning of the 18 th century Sloboda was renamed into Ostrog . Since 1721 a lot of state criminals were exiled from Russia to Siberia, to Dauri, to silver plants. All of them went through Chita along Moskovsky Highway-the Great Siberian Highway. On July 11, 1851 Chita became the center of Zabaikalskaya Region. According to resolution of Peter the first, every town had to have its own coat of arms. “ A small front garden with greenery and a buffalo’s head above his silver eyes and tongue in a golden field…” That is Chita coat of arms.
