  1. Good afternoon, dear guests and participants!
  2. You  are  welcome  to  the  phonetic  contest  among  the students who are best at English!
  1. Besides, we shall have a historical tour and you'll find out some interesting facts from the biographies of world-known English writers, and see the illustrations of the famous English painters.
  2. But before we do this, let me introduce the members of the
    jury.

(reads the list )

1-        So we start. William Shakespeare (1564-1616).

2-        William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, where he received an excellent classical education. At the age of 18 he married Ann Hathaway, and they had 3 children. Shakespeare was a playwright and a poet. As he rose in popularity, he wrote plays for the famous Globe Theatre, a round open-roofed building that housed approximately 2,000 spectators. Later Shakespeare became one of the owners of the Globe Theatre .

1- Unlike many writers who never live to enjoy their fame, Shakespeare achieved great recognition during his lifetime. He wrote 3 types of plays: comedies, tragedies and histories. He also wrote narrative poems, sonnets and lyric poetry. He is acknowledged as one of the greatest writers of all time, and has remained popular with readers around the world.

2-We hope that you'll enjoy these beautiful sonnets.

(W. Shakespeare. Sonnet 16)

 (W. Shakespeare. Sonnet 130)

  1. Robert Burns (1759-1796)
  2. Robert Burns, a well-known and popular Scottish poet, was born in 1759. At the age of 15 he began to write poems. He wrote about people, about everyday things. In 1777 the Burns moved to another town. Robert wrote poetry and organized a society of young people, where all kinds of moral, social and political problems were discussed.

1-        In 1791 he became an officer. Robert Burns published his
book 'Poems' when he was 27 years old. He wrote about
kindness and honesty of common people. Burns took part in
making a book of old Scottish folk-songs, writing words for
many melodies. Robert Burns wrote the words of the song
'Auld Lang Syne'. Scottish people sing this song, when they
celebrate the 1-st of January, New Year's Day.

( A song ' Auld Lang Syne' )

2-        Robert Burns died in poverty at the age of 37 in 1796. His poems are known and loved all over the world because Robert Burns glorified a human being. Here is one of them.

(R.Burns 'A Red, Red Rose')

1-        Thomas Moore ( 1779-1852 )

2-        Thomas Moore was born of catholic parents in Dublin. Having completed his studies of law in London, he held the post of Admiralty Registrar at Bermuda for some time and then made a tour of the United States and Canada. In 1811 he met Byron and became his life-long friend.

  1. Thomas Moore holds a place in English literature as a song writer and a satirist. It was his tender melancholy, no less than his   wit   and   good-humoured   gaiety,   that   won   him   the admiration and sympathy of the general reader. Moore's love for national Irish music and songs, his devotion to the cause of Irish independence on the one hand, and his oriental affinities on the other are characteristic of the Romantic movement.
  2. Almost everyone in our country knows the romance,  'Those
    Evening Ве1ls'('Вечерний звон'), which was written to the Bells of St. Petersburgh, but not many of you know, that its words originally belong to Thomas Moore .

(Th.Moore 'Those Evening Bells')

  1. George Gordon Byron (1788-1824)
  2. One of the greatest representatives of romantism in English literature was George Gordon Byron. He was born in London. George was ten when he inherited the title of Lord Byron and was then sent to the privileged school of Harrow and thence to Cambridge.
  1. Byron's first political efforts were made before he was 13. He became famous in 1812 after publications of the first part of 'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage'. Byron created lyric and epic poems, satirical and romantic dramas, tales, political satires. In 1816 Byron left England never to return. He participated in liberation movement of Italy and Greece. In 1924 he died from fever.
  2. Today you will listen to 2 poems of this bright romantic English poet, and you'll enjoy these splendid masterpieces.

( G.G.Byron 'My Sole is Dark')

( G.G.Byron'There is a pleasure in the pathless woods...' from Childe Harold's Pilgrimage)

1-        Oscar Wilde (1856-1900)

2-        Oscar Wilde was born  in Dublin  in the  family of a distinguished Irish surgeon and educated at Dublin and Oxford Universities. His mother was a writer of a poetry and prose. His   major   works   included   fairy-tales,   several   sparkling comedies, up to now repeatedly produced all over the world.

1-        Oscar Wilde also wrote poems, political and literary essays and various occasional pieces of history, drama and painting. He had the reputation of a brilliant society wit. In 1898 he published his best-known poem ' The Ballad of Reading Gaol'. Here is an extract from it.

( O.Wilde 'The Ballad of Reading Gaol')

2-        Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936)

1- Rudyard Kipling was an English novelist, short-story writer and poet. He is most widely known for his works for children, especially the 'Jungle Book'. Kipling was born in Bombay, India, in 1865, but attended school in England. After completing his education, he returned to India, where he worked as a newspaper reporter for several years.

2- Many of Kipling's stories and novels reflect his experience in India and convey the importance of duty and unselfishness. He was rewarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1907. But his poems are well-known as well. And now you will listen to one of them.

( R.Kipling 'If')

1- Now the floor is given to the jury.

1- Thank you for the participation and for your attention.

W. Shakespeare

        Sonnet 116

Let me not to the marriage of true minds

Admit impediments . Love is not love

Which alters when it alterations finds,

Or bend with the remover to remove:

O, no! It is an ever-fixed mark,

That looks on tempests and is never shaken;

It is the star to every wandering bark,

Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.

Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks

Within his bending sickle’s compass come;

Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,

But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

         If this be error, and upon me prov’d

         I never writ, nor no man ever lov’d.

            W. Shakespeare

        Sonnet 130

My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun ;

Coral are far more red than her lips’ red:

If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;

If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.

I have seen roses damask’d, red and white,

But no such roses see I on her cheeks;

And in some perfumes is there more delight

Than in her breath that from my mistress reeks.

I love to hear her speak, yet well I know

That music hath a far more pleasing sound:

I grant I never saw a goddess go,-

My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:

           And yet, by heaven, I  think my love as rare

           As any she belied with false compare.

Robert Burns

        A Red Red Rose

Oh, my luve `s  like a red, red rose

That`s newly sprung in June:

Oh, my luve`s like the melodie,

That’s` sweetly played in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,

So deep in luve am I;

And I will luve thee still, my dear,

Till a` the seas gang dry.

Till a` the seas gang dry, my dear,

And the rocks melt wi` the sun;

I will luve thee still, my dear,

While the sands o` life shall run

And fare thee weel my only luve!

And fare thee weel a while!

And I will come again my luve,

Tho` it were ten thousand mile.

Thomas Moore

        Those Evening Bells.

Those evening bells! those evening bells!

How many a tale their music tells

Of youth, and home, and the sweet time

When last I heard their soothing chime!

Those joyous hours are pass' d away

And many a heart, that then was gay,

Within the tomb now darkly dwells

And hears no more those evening bells!

And so 'twill be when I am gone,

That tuneful peal will still ring on,

While other bards shall walk these dells,

And sing you praise sweet evening bells.

И крепок их могильный сон;

В долине ветер разнесёт;

            G.G. Byron

*   *   *

There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,

There is a rapture on the lonely shore,

There is society, where none intrudes,

By the deep Sea, and music in its roar;

I love not Man the less, but Nature more,

From these our interviews, in which I steal

From all I may be, or have been before,

To mingle with the Universe, and feel

What I can ne’er express, yet cannot all conceal.

*   *   *

G.G. Byron

My Soul is Dark.

My soul is dark – Oh! Quickly string

The harp I yet can brook to hear;

And let thy gentle fingers fling

Its melting murmurs o’er mine ear.

If in this heart a hope be dear,

That sound shall charm it forth again:

If in these eyes there lurk a tear,

‘ Twill flow, and cease to burn my brain.

But bid the strain be wild and deep,

Not let thy notes of joy be first:

I tell thee, minstrel, I must weep

Or else this heavy heart will burst:

For it has been by sorrow nursed,

And ached in sleepless silence long:

And now ‘tis doomed to know the worst,

And break at once – or yield to song.

Томилась долго и безмолвно;

O.Wilde

*  *  *

Yet each man kills the thing he loves,

By each let this be heard,

Some do it with a bitter look,

Some with a flattering word,

The coward does it with a kiss,

The brave man with a sword!

Some kill their love when they are young,

And some when they are old;

Some strangle with the hands of Lust,

Some with the hands of Gold:

The kindness use the knife, because

The dead so soon grow cold.

Some love too little, some too long,

Some sell, and others buy;

Some do the deed with many tears and some without a sigh:

For each man kills the thing he loves,

Yet each man does not die.

(from The Ballad of Reading Goal)

Rudyard Kipling

If.

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

*  *  *

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with kings – nor lose the common touch;

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can feel the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run-

Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

And – which is more – you’ll be a man, my Son!

И маловерным отпусти их грех;

Пусть лгут лжецы, не снисходи до них;

Останься честен, говоря с толпой;

Пусть все, в свой час, считаются с тобой;
