Задание № 1: Прочитайте отрывок из рассказа и выполните задания А15 — А21, обводя цифру 1, 2, 3 или 4, соответствующую номеру выбранного вами варианта ответа.

                                                     (after Helen Fielding)

Suddenly her telephone rang. It was not the telephone registered for the house. On the contrary, it was her mobile phone, Juliet breathed put calming down. Nobody should know where she is. Mobile phone — where did she leave it? The ring tone was louder and louder. Ah! Here on a little table on the staircase. A strange number was on the screen. Juliet could swear she didn't know it. But the voice was familiar. She has known the voice since she was a teenager in bobby socks.

«Соmе home,» Ellen said from London. «Соте home now. Call the FBI and get on the next plane.»

Juliet came down the stairs into a small room and sat trembling on the silver beanbag, which looked like an item from last month's «Bijou», pushed up the door to the room. Though her hand which was holding the receiver was noticeably shaking, her voice was firm, dry and full of self-respect. «But last time I spoke to you about the matter, you only said I was driving too fast. It was not about my driving license, as I understand it. So you approved of the direction though didn't approve of the speed. Did I get it right, Ellen? Or did you say something different from what you wanted to say?»

«Juliet. I had too little information to analyse. The only thing you offered was that he was 'languid'. Your words stated that he was like a cup of lukewarm coffee. I based on it and decided that it would be no harm to continue. You somehow didn't get the fact that he tried to persuade you not to go to the Oceans Apart the night before the skyscraper blew up. Though he did it artistically, I must admit. Neither you nor I smelt the rat right away.»

«I didn't think about it before. I thought it was part of a pick-up line about asking me to breakfast. You know: «Shall I call you?» kind of thing. The building and everything attached to it seemed to be a pretext to continue talking and seeing me off.»

«You are literally unbelievable. Listen. He lied. He told you he was French and then started talking Arabic. He seemed so relaxed to you at the first glance but appeared to be active and prepared for everything. He gave an order in Arabic!» «Не only said one word. Anyway, just because he's an Arab doesn't mean he's a terrorist. It might be just that sort of prejudice he was trying to avoid when saying he was French. You know, people are against all Arabs whether they are terrorists or not. Many people think Arabs are cruel and cunning. But I'm doing a story. The Daily Telegraph is paying me expenses.*

«They'll understand. You can always pay them back. Come home.»

«I absolutely can't. It is a magnificent story, and to add to this, Al-Qaeda men don't drink champagne and surround themselves with beautiful half-clad women. They hang out in check shirts and blow up everything.*

«Unbelievable. What about Oceans Apart? Look. Shut up. You're blinded. Get on the next plane. I'll call the FBI for you, and MI 6.»

«Ellen, said Juliet quietly. 'This is my story. I found it, I'll do it. I'll get the laurels.*

There was silence for a second. «Oh God. I never thought your career is more important for you than your life itself. I don't want your story. Any of it. Something is wrong in the whole thing. Oh, it seems I can guess... It's that by-line thing, isn't it? That was Larry. He said it would be a breathtaking byline. I called him when I saw it and barked at him.»

Then why didn't you call me too?

«Не said they took your name out to save space. You're not on staff I'm not trying to nick your story. Just come home and be safe.*

«I've got to go», said Juliet. I'm supposed to be at the date in a second.' And she hang up the receiver. I'll be on staff. They will have nothing to do but invite me for full time. Or...»

1. First computers

2. Risky sport

3. Shopping in comfort

4. Difficult task

5. Professional sport

6. Shopping from home

7. New users

8. Digging for the past

A.

A group of university students from Brazil have been given the job of dis-covering and locating all the waterfalls in their country. It is not easy because very often the maps are not detailed. The students have to remain in water for long periods of time. Every day  they cover a distance of 35 to 40 kilometers through the jungle, each carrying 40 kilos of equipment.

B.

For many years now, mail-order shopping  has served the needs of a certain  kind of customers. Everything they or der from a catalogue is delivered to  their door. Now, though, e-mail shopping on the Internet has opened up even  more opportunities for this kind of shopping.

C.

Another generation of computer fans has arrived. They are neither spotty  schoolchildren nor intellectual professors, but pensioners who are learning  computing with much enthusiasm. It is particularly interesting for people  suffering from arthritis as computers offer a way of writing nice clear letters.  Now pensioners have discovered the Internet and at the moment they make up the fastest growing membership.

D.

Shopping centres are full of all kinds of stores. They are like small, self- contained towns where you can find everything you want. In a large centre,   shoppers can find everything they need  without having to go anywhere else. They can leave their cars in the s hopping centre car park and buy everything  in a covered complex, protected  from the heat, cold or rain.

E.

Not many people know that, back in the fifties, computers were very big, and also very slow. They took up complete floors of a building, and were less powerful, and much slower than  any of today’s compact portable computers. At first, the data they had  to process and record was fed in on punched-out paper; later  magnetic tape was used, but both systems were completely inconvenient.

F.

Potholing is a dull name for a most interesting and adventurous sport. Deep  underground, on the tracks of primitive men and strange animals who have adapted to life without light, finding  unusual landscapes and underground  lakes, the potholer lives an exciting adventure. You mustn’t forget, though, that it can be quite dangerous. Without the proper equipment you can fall, get injured or lost.

G.

Substantial remains of  an octagonal Roman bath house, probably reused as a Christian baptistery, have been uncovered during a student training excavation near Faversham in Kent. The central cold plunge pool was five metres across, and stood within a structure  which also had under floor heating and  hot pools, probably originally under a domed roof

1. Travel memories

2. Animal lover magazine

3. Travel to stars

4. Star dreams

5. Popular hobby

6. Family magazine

7. People and nature

8. Animals in danger

A. Most people who spend a holiday travelling take a camera with them and photograph anything that interests them – sights of a city, views of mountains, lakes, waterfalls, men and women, children, ruins of ancient buildings, and even birds and animals. Later looking through their albums they will remember the happy time they have had, the islands, countries and cities they have seen.

B. Of course, different people dream of different things. Someone wishes a calm and quiet life; others imagine their life as a never-ending adventure. The majority dream of something concrete: a villa in some warm place, an account in a Swiss bank, a splendid car… It’s interesting to know what the dreams of people who already have all this are. Celebrities, as we know, never hide their unusual hobbies, and often shock us with their extravagant behaviour.

C. It is Junior Baseball Magazine’s mission to provide information that enhances the youth baseball experience for the entire family. The player improves his skills and is more successful. The family enjoys the activity more and shares this precious time in their life. Junior Baseball emphasizes good sportsmanship, safety, physical fitness and wholesome family values.

D. The seas are in danger. They are filled with poison like industrial, nuclear and chemical waste. The Mediterranean Sea is already nearly dead; the North Sea is following it. The Aral Sea is on the brink of extinction. If nothing is done about it, one day nothing will be able to live in the seas. Every ten minutes one species of animal, plant or insect dies out forever.

E. Lots of people all over the world enjoy collecting stamps. Stamps are like little pictures. Very often they show the flowers or the trees which grow in this or that country, or they can show different kinds of transport of the country. Stamps may also have portraits of famous people on them. Some stamps show art work from the history of the country.

F. “Friend” is the title of my favourite magazine. It consists of 70 pages, with lots of colourful and bright pictures and provides interesting and useful information for people who love animals. The magazine includes numerous articles devoted to various topics connected with domestic animals, ways to take care of them, pet food, animal health and many other topics crucial for any animal lover.

G. People are beginning to realize that environmental problems are not just somebody else’s. Many people join and support various international organizations and green parties. What could be more important than human life? Polluted air, poisoned water, wastelands, noise, smoke – all these influence not only nature but people as well. Everything should be done to improve ecological conditions on our planet.
