                                Model world.

O.        You are obsessed with models. 1. But what’s the reality like for a beginning model?

  1. Throughout the year, New York City agencies go scouting in towns all over the world. 2. The purpose is two fold: to create professional portfolios and to gauge the interest of potential clients.
  2. But for now, where to put a gangly 14-year-old from East Bumlick? 3. An invitation to stay in one such dwelling means they think you have potential.
  3. The agency reassures parents, because a chaperone lives there; models under 17 go to bed at 11 pm; and boys, cigarettes and alcohol are forbidden. But it’s also staggeringly costly: about 35$ a day for a bed in a bare room with five other girls. The girls’ parents cover their daily expenses-food, clothes, telephone calls, entertainment and transportation to New York. 4.
  4. The pad is located in Manhattan, close to many magazines and ad agencies. When I arrived one evening last summer, five girls were flopped on the two slightly worn couches, grouped around the TV.
  5. I prowled around the apartment. Tidy Kitchen. 5. The models’ bedroom, with the wooden slats of all the bunk beds making it look like a giant playpen. The walls were dotted with photos of friends, family and pets. In the bathroom, a T-shirt lay rumpled in the corner, a a used towel wilted on the floor, long strands of hair adorned the sink.
