Communication skills is one of the main aims in teaching foreign languages. It can be gained through various activities, including games. Communication games motivate students. It’s an important tool that helps teachers in their work.

About games A game is an activity with rules,a goal and an element of fun. Communicative games are activities with a non-linguistic goal or aim. The emphasis in the games is on successful communication rather than on correctness of language.

“ Hangman” game This game can be used at the beginning of the lesson, as a warm-up. Students revise the letters and words.

The spelling shark It’s a version of the traditional “Hangman” game Write up a set of blank lines for the letters in the word. In the corner of the board draw a shark. Pupils take turns to guess a letter in the word. If it’s in the word, write it. If not,draw a little “stick figure” under the word.

“ Bingo” Write or stick some words on the board. Pupils choose any 6 words and write them on a card. Call out words at random. Pupils cross words that they have. The person, who cross all the words and calls out “bingo”, wins.

What can I see? Look for a known object in the classroom, easily visible, e.g. a ruler. Don’t name it or look at it. Say: One, two, three. What can I see? I can see something beginning with R. (Pupils make guesses)

Who am I? You can start with a choosing rhyme: Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Mo. Choose a person; off we Go! The pupil chosen is the one you are pointing at on the word Go! He(She) answers Yes/No questions and guesses who he(she) is.

The function of this activity is asking for and giving personal information. The object of the game is to complete the form. To do this, students must move around the class asking questions about Mr X until they have obtained enough information to complete the form. Looking for Mr X
