W.Shakespeare “As you like it”

Dear boys and girls! Today we shall have a literary party devoted to W.Shakespeare. I invite you to join us in our literary tour around W.Shakespeare`s kingdom. It will be really wonderful!  W.Shakespeare was born in 1564. And this year we celebrate the 430 years anniversary of his birth.

Look at the blackboard! Here is epigraph of our party. I hope you will know many interesting things about W.Shakespeare, his life and his works.

2) Pupil1: W.Shakespeare w3as born on or about April 23, 1564, in Stratford-on-Avon. His father, John Shakespeare, was a Glover and a dealer in wool and other farm products. He was a respected figure in Stratford. In his childhood William went to the Grammar school where, besides reading and writing, he has taught Latin. They say that when he had free time he liked to go to the forest and to the river. When actors visited Stratford William liked to watch them. He was interested in that profession and decided to become an actor himself.

Pupil2: But it was not so quick. In 1582 at just over 18 Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, a farmer’s daughter. In 1583 Susanna, their fint child was born and twins Hamlet and Judith followed in 1585. Later that year Shakespeare left for London. We know absolutely nothing about his life for the next 7 years. May be he wrote his sonnets and poems, but we know for certain that in 1592 a playwright Robert Green, wrote an angry pamphlet on Shakespeare from which we may conclude that by that year Shakespeare had become a dramatist.

Shakespeare wrote most of his plays for the Globe Theatre.

Pupil3: At the same time, Shakespeare was an actor, a poet and a writer of drama. He wrote 154 sonnets, 2 long poems and 37 plays, where he showed his creative genius. The first period (1590-1600) of his creative work consists of comedies and histories. In this period Shakespeare wrote such histories as”King Henry5”, “King Richard2”, “King Richard3”, and others. Here the author showed historical events and dramatic characters.

Pupil4: “Romeo and Juliet” is one of Shakespeare’s best plays. It is a tragedy, but it was written in the first period of his creative work. This play is full of love, youth and humanism.

Pupil5: All of Shakespeare’s famous tragedies appeared between 1600 and 1608. This was the second period of his literary work. In the plays of this period the dramatist reaches his full maturity. He presents great human problems. This period began with the tragedy “Hamlet”, which was a great success. The following plays belonging to the second period: “King Lear”, “Othello”, and “Macbeth”.

Pupil6: In 1612, Shakespeare left London. Nobody knows what he did during the last years of his life. Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616, and he was buried in Stratford.

Teacher: You have mentioned the main facts in Shakespeare’s biography. Now I would like you agree or disagree with some facts from William Shakespeare’s life:

a) Shakespeare was born in the 17 Th century. Is it try?

b) William got a good education in London.

c) William married late.

d) William Shakespeare had three children.

e) His wife Anne Hathaway loved Theatre very much.

f) Shakespeare never acted on the stage.

g) Shakespeare died in London and was buried in Westminster Abbey.

Thank you for your answers. I see that you know Shakespeare’s life rather well.

3) Teacher: Now we will work in groups of three or four. Match the columns. Then pass me your answers in writing form.

1. “to be or not to be: that is the question”

2. “rats desert a sinking ship”

3. “much ado about nothing”

4. “have you pray`d tonight Desdemona?”

5. “something is rotten in the state of Denmark”

6. “one for all, and all for one”

7. “the taming of the shrew”

8. “never was a story of more woe”

Pupil6: Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets. Let’s listen to some of them:        Sonnet 21

So is it not with me as with that Muse,

Stirr`d by a painted beauty to his verse,

Who heaven itself for ornament doth use,

And every fair with his fair doth rehearse,

Making a couplement of proud compare

With sun and moon, with earth and sea’s rich gems,

With April’s first-born flowers, and all things rare

Pupil7:

That heaven’s air in this huge rondure hems.

O, let me, true in love, but truly write,

And then believe me, my love is as fair

As any mother’s child, though not so bright

As those gold candles fixt in heaven’s air:

Let them say more that like of hearsay well;

I will not praise that purpose not to sell.

Рupil9:         Sonnet 65

Since brass, nor stone, nor earth, nor boundless sea,

But sad mortality o`ersways their power,

How with this rage shall beauty hold a plea,

Whose action is no stronger than a flower?

O, how shall summer’s honey breath hold out

Against the wreckful siege of battering days,

When rocks impregnable are not so stout,

Nor gates of steel so strong, but Time decays?

O fearful meditation! Where, alack,

Shall Time’s best jewel from Time’s chest lie hid?

Or what strong hand can hold his swift foot back?

Or who his spoil of beauty can forbid?

O none, unless this miracle have might,

That in black ink my love may still shine bright.

Pupil11:               Sonnet 116

Let me not to the marriage of true minds

Admit impediments. Love is not love

Which alters when it alteration finds,

Or bends with the remover to remove.

O no, it is an ever-fixed mark,

That looks on tempests, and is never shaken;

It is the star to every wandering bark,

Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.

Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks

Within his bending sickle’s compass come;

Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,

But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

If this be error, and upon me proved,

I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Teacher: One of the best plays by W. Shakespeare was “Romeo and Juliet”. Ф.Джефирелли screened the film   “Romeo and Juliet”. Нино Рота wrote  a melody to this film “Тема любви”. This wonderful love story is about two lovers, Romeo and Juliet. Unfortunately, they died, but they didn’t stop loving each other. They stayed young forever! Listen to this beautiful melody.

And now we’ll see the part, from the modern film of America operators. You’ll see the part of Romeo which was played by Leonardo de Caprio, and the part of Juliet which was played by Clair Danes. Newspapers wrote about this film: “Fresh, trembling, exciting – this is Romeo and Juliet as you’ve never seen it before”. Shakespeare’s classic story has been updated for the big screen.(просмотр видео-отрывка)

Teacher: The pupils of your class dramatized the part from the play “Romeo and Juliet”. Let’s see and listen to them.

Romeo and Juliet”

Romeo: He jests at scars that never felt a wound.

But soft! What light through yonder window breaks?

It is the East, and Juliet is the sun!

Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,

Who is already sick and pale with grief,

That thou her maid art far more fair than she,

Be not her maid, since she is envious,

Her vestal livery is but sick and green,

And none but fools do wear it. Cast it off.

It is my lady; O, it is my love:

O that she knew she were.

She speaks, yet she says nothing. What of that?

Her eye discourses; I will answer it.

See how she leans her cheek upon her hand,

That I might touch that cheek.

Juliet: O, Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?

Deny thy father and refuse thy name;

Or, if thou will not, be but sworn my love

And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.

Romeo: Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?

Juliet: `Tis but thy name that is my enemy.

Thou art thyself, though not a Montague!

What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot,

Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part

Belonging to a man! O, be some other name!

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose

By any other name would smell as sweet.

So Romeo would, were he not Romeo, call`d,

Retain that dear perfection which he owes

Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name;

And for thy name, which is no part of thee,

Take all myself.

Romeo: I take thee at thy word.

Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptized,

Henceforth I never will be Romeo.

Pupil13: Our party is to the end. Thank you for taking an active part in it. Good bye!
