St. Patrick's Day is an Irish holiday. It is celebrated on March 17. St. Patrick is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. St Patrick is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland.

Слайд 3

Little is known of Patrick's early life. It is known that he was born in Roman Britain in the fourth century, into a wealthy Romano-British family. His father was a deacon in the Christian church. At the age of sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken captive to Ireland as a slave. He was told by God in a dream to flee from captivity to the coast, where he would board a ship and return to Britain. Upon returning, he quickly joined the Church in Gaul and studied to be a priest. Patrick died on March 17 493 (according to another version, the 461) year. He was canonized before the separation of the Church in the west and east, so is revered as a saint in both. So one theory said that the holiday is celebrated on March 17th because it is the day when St. Patrick died.

Saint Patrick is most known for bringing writing to Ireland and driving the snakes from the country. It is true there are no snakes in Ireland. But the scientists explain that snakes have never been there because the island was separated from the rest of the continent at the end of the Ice Age.

Saint Patrick's feast day, as a kind of national day, was celebrated by the Irish in Europe in the ninth and tenth centuries. In 1903 Saint Patrick's Day became an official public holiday in Ireland. The first Saint Patrick's Day parade held in the Irish Free State was held in Dublin in 1931.

Слайд 7

In the middle 1990s the government of the Republic of Ireland began a campaign to use Saint Patrick's Day to showcase Ireland and its culture. The government set up a group called St Patrick's Festival, with the aims: To offer a national festival that ranks amongst all of the greatest celebration in the world. To create energy and excitement throughout Ireland ; To provide the opportunity and motivation for people of Irish descent to attend and join in the imaginative and expressive celebrations; To project, internationally, an accurate image of Ireland as a creative, professional and sophisticated country with wide appeals.

Слайд 9

Today people celebrate this holiday attending parades and festivals, singing and dancing, attending mass or service in the church, joining religious processions, wearing shamrocks, wearing green or orange clothes, organizing activities for children such as crafts, coloring and games, drinking Irish beer and Irish whiskey.

Слайд 12

Shamrock is the symbol of this holiday and the national flower of Ireland. The reason is that St. Patrick used it to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagans.

Слайд 13

On St. Patrick's Day people cook special meals. The traditional dish is a cabbage with bacon or corned beef. In addition, there are a lot of dishes, prepared with different types of beer.

Слайд 14

Many American cities have a tradition on St. Patrick's to dye rivers or streams green!

Слайд 15

This holiday is celebrated in the UK, in some parts of Argentina, in Canada, Australia, Russia, in the USA, in Japan, Switzerland and other countries. On this day everyone becomes "a little Irish."It is associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

Слайд 17

First Saint Patrick's Day parade took place in Russia in 1992. There has been an annual international festival "Saint Patrick's Day" in Moscow and other Russian cities since 1999. The Moscow Parade usually is divided in two parts – official and unofficial. The first seems like a military parade and is performed in collaboration with the Moscow government and the Irish embassy in Moscow. The unofficial parade is performed by volunteers and seems more like a carnival and show with juggling, stilts, jolly-jumpers and Celtic music.

Слайд 19

I made small research. I asked pupils from my school these questions: Do you know anything about St. Patrick’s Day? Do you celebrate this holiday? When is it celebrated? In what countries is this holiday popular?

Слайд 20

I got the following answers: 35% of our students know some facts about St. Patrick’s Day. Only 5% of students celebrate this holiday. 15% of students know the date of St. Patrick’s Day. Nobody knows in what countries this holiday is popular.

Слайд 21

So, I think that this presentation will help students and grown-ups to learn information about St. Patrick’s Day.
