 Russia

        Russia is the largest country in the world. It is situated in both Europe and Asia. The territory of the country is about 17 million square km with the population of about 145 million people. There are 21 republics and 62 regions in the country.

        The official name of the country is the Russian Federation. The country is a parliamentary republic. The head of the state is the President. The national government consists of the President, the Council of Ministers and the Federal Assembly. The main law of the country is the Constitution. It guarantees the rights of the citizens.

        The country is washed by twelve seas and three oceans: The Pacific ocean, the Atlantic ocean and the Arctic ocean. It borders on many countries: China, Finland, Norway, Belorussia and others. The landscape is varied. There are highlands in the east, plains, forests and valleys in the midlands, the tundra and taiga in the north. There are several mountain chains: the Urals, the Caucasus, the Altai. Russia is rich in rivers and lakes. The Volga River which flows into the Caspian sea is the longest river in Russia. Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world.

        There are different types of climate on the territory of Russia. It is very cold in the north even in summer. In the central part of the country winters ate usually cold, summers are very warm. It is usually warm in the south even in winter. The Black sea coast is unique as the Caucasus Mountains covered with snow start practically on the seashore. It is a great place for swimming in summer and for skiing in winter.  Sochi hosted the Winter Olympic Games only a year ago in February of 2014. We are proud of our sportsmen who won these games.

Russia is an industrial country. It has a lot of mineral resources: coal, natural gas, oil. There are a lot of large factories and plants all over the country. Russia is also an agricultural country. We plant wheat, corn, fruit and vegetables.

Russia has a very rich history. It is an ancient country with a lot of historic places of interest, big cultural centers and small towns. There are a lot of museums, theatres, cinemas, libraries restaurants and clubs in big cities. Such cities are usually noisy with heavy traffic and full of smoke.

The capital of Russia is Moscow. It is one of the biggest cities in the world with population about 12 million people. The second largest city in Russia is St. Petersburg on the Neva. This is a city of numerous monuments, museums and art galleries.

Russia is a great country with great culture.
