Cambridge

Слайд 2

According to the legend the University of Cambridge in England was founded in 1209 by scholars escaping Oxford after a fight with Oxford locals. King Henry III of England granted them a teaching monopoly in 1231 . Nowadays two universities are known as Oxbridge. They produce a large proportion of Britain's outstanding scientists , writers , and politicians . The University contains thirty-one independent colleges. The first college was Peterhouse founded in 1284. The second oldest college is King's Hall which was founded in 1317. Many other colleges were founded during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. During those early times the colleges were founded so that their students would pray for the souls of the founders and were often associated with chapels, if not abbeys. The first colleges for women were Girton College in 1869 and Newnham College in 1872. Of the 31 colleges, three are now for women only (Lucy Cavendish, New Hall, and Newnham), and two are for graduate students only (Clare Hall and Darwin). The most popular leisure activities are: cricket, rowing (against Oxford) and acting in theatre clubs (the most famous being Footlights ).

Corpus Christi Clock The clock's face is a 24-carat gold-plated stainless steel disc, about 1.5 metres in diameter. The dominating sculpture of a metal insect looks like a grasshopper. So, it is called the"time eater". It moves its mouth, as if it eats the seconds as they pass and it "blinks" being happy to eat.

Слайд 5

Bikes are the most common way to get around in Cambridge. You will see anyone from a student to a Don on their bikes. Bikes are locked up everywhere. Bridge of Sighs, St John's College, 1831 Probably Cambridge's best known bridge, designed by Henry Hutchinson and based on the Bridge of Sighs in Venice. But that bridge is with a roof. No prisoners sigh here, but students about their classes. Two centuries of rowing…. Oxford via Cambridge. Queen's Gate dates back to 1597, it has a statue of Queen Elizabeth I over the archway.
