                                Scottish dress

The term highland dress describes the traditional dress of Scotland.

Full Highland Dress  is commonly seen at formal occasions, such as dinner or the theatre. In the last 25 years it has become the most favoured Celtic wedding outfit, for  both bridegroom and many of  the male guests. Naturally Full Highland Dress starts with a kilt, a winged dress shirt and a black bow tie. The kilt pin is worn on the apron of the kilt that protects  it from often winds. Then comes Prince Charlie kilt jacket , thistle belt badge in silver and a dress sporran with a silver chain. Flashes are worn on the kilt hose, which can either match or contrast with the  kilt`s  tartan.

The ornamental knife (Sgian Dubh)is tucked into the kilt hose. The full  plaid (usually the same tartan as the kilt)is traditionally worn by pipers. The plaid is wrapped around the wearer`s chest, and under  the right arm with the excess material being thrown over their left shoulder(not to interfere with the shoulder straps of the pipes). Traditionally only Chiefs, Commanders of military regiments and their wives and pipers are permitted to wear their plaids over their left shoulder. Others are expected to wear  it over the right shoulder.

Ghillies, or ghillie brogues are traditional thick soled shoes with no tongues and long laces. The laces are wrapped around and tied above the wearer`s ankle so that the shoes do not get pulled off in mud. The shoes lack tongues so the wearer`s feet can dry more quickly in damp Scottish weather. The ghillie brogue is named after the ghillie, the traditional Scottish gamekeeper.

Female highland dress includes women`s  shoes, also called ghillies, that are tied in the same way but have thin soles for indoor wear and dancing. Traditionally, women and girls do not wear kilts but may wear ankle-length tartan skirts. Women may also wear tartan dress.
