Lewis Carrol  Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Ch.4 The Rabbit Sends in a Little Bill

I  Look at the picture. Don’t you remember where Alice is? What happened to her? How do you think she is feeling?

II Listen and read the story at the same time. Check уour guesses. Answer the questions.

  Luckily for Alice, the little magic bottle had now had its full effect, and she grew no larger: still it was very uncomfortable, and, as there seemed to be no sort of chance of her ever getting out of the room again, no wonder she felt unhappy.

1. Did Alice stop growing? Prove your answer.
2. How did she feel? Why?
3. Did she have any chance to get out of the room?

( NB    …there seemed to be no sort of chance =… She had no chance)

“It was much pleasanter at home” ,thought poor Alice, “ when one wasn’t always growing larger and smaller, being ordered about by mice and rabbits. I almost wish I hadn’t gone down that rabbit-hole –and yet –and yet – it’s rather curious, you know, this sort of life!”

4. Do you think Alice felt homesick?

(NB   I wish I hadn’t gone down that rabbit- hole =

        I regretted going down that rabbit- hole)

“I do wonder what can happen to me! When I used to read fairy tales, I fancied that kind of thing never happened, and now here I am in the middle of one! There ought to be a book written about me, that there ought! And when I grow up, I’ll write one – but I’m grown up now,” she added in a sorrowful tone, “at least there’s no room to grow up any more here”

5. Did Alice realize she was in an unusual situation? What makes you think so?
6. Did she want anybody to know about her adventures? How can you guess?

“But then,’’ thought Alice, “shall I never get any older than I am now? That’ll be a comfort, one way – never to be an old woman – but then – always to have lessons to learn! Oh, I shouldn’t like that!”

 “Oh, you foolish Alice!” she answered herself. “ How can you learn lessons in here? Why, there is hardly room for you, and no room at all for any lesson-books!”

 And so she went on taking first one side and then the other, and making quite a conversation of it altogether; but a few minutes she heard a voice outside, and stop to listen.

8. Alice found some advantages of being in the Rabbit’s house, didn’t she?

III  Grammar and Vocabulary tasks.

1. Word building. Fill in the table. Give some more examples

2. Comparison of adjectives. Find the adjectives in the comparative. Give some more examples of forming degrees of comparison.
3. Wish + had /hadn’t done smth.

It was a stupid thing to say. I wish I (not/say) it.

I really don’t enjoy the party. I wish I (not/go).

I got a bad mark. I wish I (do) homework.

IV  Speaking. Tell  your classmates

1) if you have ever regretted doing smth;

2) if you have ever dreamed of writing a book about your adventures;

3) if you wouldn’t  like to be a grown up
