« THE USA. Washington D.C.»

The USA is made up of fifty states and one independent district – the district of Columbia
The beautiful city of  Washington  D.C. is the capital of the United States of America. The capital was named after the first president George Washington and was founded in 1790.
It is situated on the
Potomac River in the District of Columbia. The oposite bank of  Potomac River is Verginia. It is culture and trade centre.
There is Key Bridge. It  connects Washington and Verginia. This bridge was named after Francis Scott Key.the founder of American anthem.
There are no scyscrapers because no other building must be taller than
the Capitol, the seat of
the American Congress. When the Capitol was expanded in the 1850s, some of the construction labor was carried out by
slaves "who cut the logs, laid the stones and baked the bricks". The original plan was to use workers brought in from Europe; however, there was a poor response to recruitment efforts, and African Americans—free and slave—composed the majority of the work force. When the dome of the Capitol was finally completed, it was significantly larger than the original plan, and its massive visual weight overpowered the proportions of the columns of the East Portico, built in 1828. The East Front of the Capitol building was rebuilt in 1904, following a design of the architects Carrère and Hastings, who also designed the Senate and House office buildings. The Capitol has a long history in art of the United States, beginning in 1856 with Italian-American artist Constantino Brumidi and his murals in the hallways of the first floor of the Senate side of the Capitol. The murals, known as the Brumidi Corridors, reflect great moments and people in United States history. Among the original works are those depicting Benjamin Franklin, John Fitch, Robert Fulton, and events such as the Cession of Louisiana. Also decorating the walls are animals, insects and natural flora indigenous to the United States.
The White House where the President lives and has his offices. At first it was made of grey stone. In 1814 it was burned by britains. Then it was partly rebuilt and painted in white.
Washington has long wide avenues.
Washington Metro is one of the biggest underground in the world after New York. There are five lines and 86 stations.Walking along the streets in the china block you can notice that all the most impotant inscriptions are duplicated in chineese.
 Places of interest
Washington is a large scientific and cultural centre. There is The Smitsonian Institute, the world's largest museum complex. The National Gallery of Art houses a wonderful collection of American and European Art . Also you can visit  The National Academy of Science.
Below is the
Albert Einstein Memorial in front of the National Academy of Science in Washington, sculpted by Bob Berks.  Einstein is contemplating the universe spread out before his feet.
The Library of Congress is one of the largest libraries in the world. There are about 26 mil. books, maps, pictures, photoes and 23 president’s archives. The head of the Library is the
Librarian of Congress, currently James H. Billington.

The Library of Congress was established by Congress in 1800 and was housed in the United States Capitol for most of the 19th century. After much of the original collection had been destroyed during the War of 1812, Thomas Jefferson sold the library 6487 books, his entire personal library, in 1815 . After a period of decline during the mid-19th century the Library of Congress began to grow rapidly in both size and importance after the American Civil War, culminating in the construction of a separate library building and the transference of all copyright deposit holdings to the Library. During the rapid expansion of the 20th century the Library of Congress assumed a preeminent public role, becoming a "library of last resort" and expanding its mission for the benefit of scholars and the American people.

Between the white house and capitol you can see The Washington Monument made of marble. Its height is 169 m. It is the highest monument in the world. It was built by Robert Mills as the monument to the first president, George Washington.

Lincoln Memorial  was built to the 16th president Abraham Lincoln. It simbolize the trust in free people. There is the statue of himself in the memorial.

The building is in the form of a Greek Doric temple and contains a large seated sculpture of Abraham Lincoln and inscriptions of two well-known speeches by Lincoln. The memorial has been the site of many famous speeches, including Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered on August 28, 1963 during the rally at the beginning of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
