FOOTBALL The most popular sport in the UK, association football was first codified in 1863 in London. It is known in the US and other countries as 'soccer.' The impetus for this was to unify English public school and university football games. There is evidence for refereed, team football games being played in English schools since at least 1581. An account of an exclusively kicking football game from Nottinghamshire in the fifteenth century bears striking similarity to football. The playing of football in England is documented since at least 1314. England is home to the oldest football clubs in the world (dating from at least 1857), the world's oldest competition (the FA Cup founded in 1871) and the first ever football league (1888). The modern passing game of football was developed in London in the early 1870s . For these reasons England is considered the cradle of the game of football.

FOOTBALL Association football , more commonly known as football or soccer , is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball. It is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries and dependencies, making it the world's most popular sport . The game is played on a rectangular field with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by getting the ball into the opposing goal. Players are not allowed to touch the ball with their hands or arms while it is in play, unless they are goalkeepers (and then only when within their penalty area). Other players mainly use their feet to strike or pass the ball, but may also use their head or torso. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is level at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time or a penalty shootout depending on the format of the competition. The Laws of the Game were originally codified in England by The Football Association in 1863. Association football is governed internationally by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA; French: Fédération Internationale de Football Association ), which organises World Cups for both men and women every four years.

ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL Each country organises its own football league; there are a few teams who chose to play in another country. The English football league system , also known as the football pyramid , is a series of interconnected leagues for men's association football clubs in England, with six teams from Wales and one from Guernsey also competing. The system has a hierarchical format with promotion and regulation between leagues at different levels, allowing even the smallest club the theoretical possibility of ultimately rising to the very top of the system, although in practice it would take a team at the bottom levels at least two decades of consistently finishing at or near the top of each successive league to reach the top level, and even then additional restrictions, particularly in regard to stadium facilities, would then come into effect at the highest levels that could prevent a club from being allowed access to the top levels. There are more than 140 individual leagues, containing more than 480 divisions . The exact number of clubs varies from year to year as clubs join and leave leagues or fold altogether, but an estimated average of 15 clubs per division implies that more than 7,000 teams of nearly 5,300 clubs are members of a league in the English men's football league system.

ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL The Premier League is an English professional league for men's association football clubs . At the top of the English football league system, it is the country's primary football competition. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and regulation with the English Football League (EFL ; known as "The Football League" before 2016–17). Welsh clubs that compete in the English football league system can also qualify. The Premier League is a corporation in which the 20 member clubs act as shareholders. Seasons run from August to May. Teams play 38 matches each (playing each team in the league twice, home and away), totalling 380 matches in the season. Most games are played on Saturday and Sunday afternoons; others during weekday evenings. It is colloquially known as the Premiership and outside the UK it is commonly referred to as the English Premier League (EPL).

CRICKET England is the motherland of cricket. Its popularity, though second to that of football, is supported by thousands of fans, who gather to see cricket played in England. The rules of Cricket were initially regulated in the 18th century in the Marylebone Cricket Club or MCC, which is at the Lord’s Cricket Stadium. Reputable cricket players and researchers were involved. Today the UK has more than 29 cricket clubs and over thousands of cricket teams.

The role of sport in the formation of an English identity England, like the other nations of the United Kingdom, competes as a separate nation in some international sporting events. The English association football , cricket (the England Cricket team represents England and Wales) and rugby union teams have contributed to an increasing sense of English identity. Supporters are more likely to carry the St George's Cross whereas twenty years ago the British Union Flag would have been the more prominent.

The role of sport in the formation of an English identity "Watching the crowd in Trafalgar Square celebrating the Ashes win, I couldn't help but be amazed at how quickly the flag of St George has replaced the Union Flag in the affections of England fans. A generation ago, England games looked a lot like Last Night of the Proms , with the red, white and blue firmly to the fore. Now, it seems, the English have begun to remember who they are.“ ( Daily Mirror newspaper (UK) , article by Billy Bragg, 17 September 2005 - Accessed November 2006.)
