Тема урока:  How to solve environmental problems.

Цели: активизировать лексический материал по теме Экология и грамматический материал Conditional II в устной речи учащихся; развитие умения анализировать информацию; бережное отношение к окружающей среде.

Средства и оборудование: доска, карточки с заданием, карточки с перечнем тем для работы в группах, карточки для разделения на группы, тексты.

Ход урока:

  1. Организационный момент.
  2. Conditional II (What is it? Give your examples.).
  3. Cards: find the right end to your sentence.
  4. What do you think about these ideas?
  5. We have got several posters. (Постеры подготовлены учащимися заранее в ходе предыдущих уроков по теме «Экология».) Look at them and say what problems they illustrate. (I take them down on the board.) What do you know about them? WATER POLLUTION, AIR POLLUTION, JUNK FOOD, RUBBISH.
  6. Today we’ll talk about one more ecological problem. You’ve been handed in a new text. Look through the text and say what another environmental problem it is about. THE GLOBAL WARMING
  7. Take a card. (Учитель предлагает учащимся выбрать одну из предложенных рубашкой вверх карточек, на обратной стороне которой нарисован квадрат или круг.) Each card has a special sign. Let’s arrange two groups according to the signs on your cards. Look at the board and guess the task. (Answer the questions marked with a certain sign.)
  8. Feedback and work on the words (from the answers): CARBON DIOXIDE, OXYGEN, RAINFORESTS, TO RECOVER, GREENHOUSE EFFECT. (Read them after me, without me, at random from Russian into English).
  9. Say if the scheme you see on the board is correct or not. (На доске учителем заранее изображена схема парникового эффекта: или правильно или со специально допущенными ошибками.) Correct the mistakes if there are any.
  10. Take a card with a number of ecological problems. The task: you are scientists from different countries (so you have to speak English), you’ve been studying the environment for a long time. You want to share your ideas about the subject. 1) Prepare a report on the problems from your card; 2) suggest your solutions to these problems using Conditional II. (5 minutes)
  11. Feedback: listen to your colleagues and take down their advice. Tell me the advice (I write them on the board). Say if they are effective in your opinion (the opponents can disagree).
  12. All the students take down the ideas of possible environmental problems solutions from the board.
  13. Homework: write on the topic “My view on solutions of environmental problems” (use the ideas from the lesson and Conditional II).

! We’ll arrange your posters and essays into a file “How to solve environmental problems” and use it as materials for other pupils!

Animals and plants are in danger. The world had over nine million sq.  km. of forests. This is a lot of different species of trees. But they are disappearing fast. Every day we use paper and cardboard, both made from wood. We use different kinds of wood in furniture. Every year 100 000 sq.km. of forests are cut down for different uses, and a lot of forests are so badly damaged that they will hardly be able to recover (восстановиться). If we go on like this, by the time you are as old as your grandparents are now all the forests on the Earth can be destroyed. This includes rainforests in South America, Africa and Asia. The huge forests help to control the world’s weather, and to produce much of the oxygen in the air.

In the last few years people have cut down and burnt such big areas of rainforests that it means much more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. People and animals produce carbon dioxide when they breathe. They breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. Also a lot of carbon dioxide is produced when we burn things (gases thrown into the air by factories). During the last 100 years people have produced a lot of carbon dioxide. This gas in the atmosphere works like glass in a greenhouse. It lets heat in, but it doesn’t let much heat out. This is called the greenhouse effect. So the atmosphere becomes warmer because the heat which the sunlight gives us can’t go back into space. The greenhouse effect is considered to be the main cause of the global warming. Winter and summer temperatures in many places have become higher. Climate of our planet has been changing.
