Galina Ulanova.

Galina Ulanova, a famous ballerina, is a real legend of Russian Ballet Dancing.

She was born оn the 8th of January 1910 in Saint-Petersburg. Her father, Sergey Ulanov, was

A well-known ballet dancer and a stage-manager. Her mother was a classic ballet dancer and

a teacher of choreography at a Ballet Dancing School.

She started her dancing career at the age of 9 when she entered Petrograd School of Choreography in 1918. Her first teacher was her mother then she continued her education under the guidance of A.Vaganova. After her graduation she joined the company of Mariinsky Theatre.

At the age of 19 for the first time she started in the leading part of Odetta-Odillia in the “Swan Lake” by Chaikovskiy.

She also danced many leading parts such as Maria in “The Nadcrecher” by Chikovskiy, Giselle in the ballet of the same name, Juliet in the ballet “Romeo and Juliet” by Prokophjev and many others.

Later Galina Ulanova moved to Moscow where she lived and danced from 1944 to 1960 on the stage of Bolshoy Theatre.

After finishing her ballet career she started teaching young ballerinas sharing her knowledge and experience. Among her students there were such famous ballet dancers as E.Maksimova, L.Semeniaka, N.Timopheeva, N.Tseskareadze, M.Kolpakchi and many others.

She also participated in many international ballet dancing festivals and contests.

She was awarded the title of the Honoured and National Artist of the Soviet Union so as many other titles and awards.

Galina Ulanova believed that only deep immersion into the character gives to change oneself completely. She was a great master of transformation. She was so impressive dancing the part of Juliet on the stage of Mariinsky Theatre that the performance became quite an event. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ with Galina Ulanova was also a great success in London in 1956. After the performance the people lifted Ulanova’s car and carried it for some time.

But despite her great success she was never satisfied with her dancing and it made her practice hours on end mastering her dancing skills. She was really very hard-working and her gestures were just perfect.

But she went down into the history of ballet dancing not only due to her perfect technique but because she was a unique actress who was able to create a special atmosphere on the stage and reveal the innerworld of the character. It resulted in great expressiveness and harmony of dance.
