                                  What day is it today?

Фонетическая зарядка: T. Let`s read English proverb and answer the question. What is it about?

                                Unity is strength.

United we stand, divided we fall.

The voice of one man is the voice of no one.

                                One man, no man.

                                The more, the merrier.

One  for all and all for one.

P. I think, this proverb is about unity. When can people be strong? What do you think?

P. It seems to me, people can be strong when they do sport.

T. I can agree with you. You are right. And today…

Основной момент:

  1. At our lesson we`ll continue speaking about sport. At home you made up stories about your favourite sport using ex. 10, p. 102 as a model, didn`t you?

P. Yes, we did.

Now let`s check your homework. For example, when Tanya reads her story you will ask questions. Now let`s listen to Tanya.

            My favourite sport.

I enjoy many sports, but best of all I love swimming. I started to learn when I was about seven years old. When I was younger I used to go swimming three or four times a week. Now I have less free time but I try to go to the swimming pool at least once a week. Swimming helps me to stay in good shape, to keep fit and to be healthy. Besides, it helps me to work off my extra energy. My parents also go to the swimming pool but they began going in for swimming when they were grown-ups.

Swimming is an inexpensive and simple sport. You do not need any complicated equipment. You just need a swimming costume or trunks and perhaps a cap. You can swim in the sea or a river or you can go to a special swimming pool.

The first thing you need to learn is how to float in the water. You can help yourself do this  by wearing a ring or by putting water wings on your arms. As soon as you can float, you are ready to learn some basic swimming strokes like breast- stroke, back-stroke and crawl.

I like swimming because it is a very good exercise for the whole body. I would recommend it because it is so convenient to do. You can do it when you like and for as long as you like.

Questions:

  1. What is your favourite kind of sport?
  2. When did you start swimming?
  3. When is the best time to start swimming?
  4. What do you need for swimming?
  5. What swimming strokes do you know?
  6. What are the benefits of going in for swimming?
  7. Have you ever tried other water sports?
  8. What kind of sports would you like to try?
  9. Do you watch sports competitions on TV?
  10. Do you subscribe to any sports newspaper?

II.a) T. Well done. Now let`s go on speaking about aquatics. Look at the pictures on the smartboard  and say what each water sport is. Then say what we do in each sport.

P. In the first picture I can see sailing. In sailing we use a boat or yacht to travel across the sea. We need to put up sails and steer the boat. We can use boats in races or just move in a relaxing way from one place to another.

P. I think, it is surfing. In surfing we use a surfboard to ride the waves. Surfers must stay on the board and do difficult turns.

b) Let`s listen to  the article and match the missing paragraphs (1-4) to the spaces (A-C). There is one paragraph that you do not need to use.

Surf`s Up!

Have you ever wondered how the sport of surfing was invented? Although riding the waves is popular all around the world today, few people realize that it has been practised in the South Seas for  hundreds of years. In fact, it was not just a sport but a means of travel. (A)…

In the 1770s the British explorer James Cook reported seeing natives practicing the sport of surfing in Tahiti. Surfing grew in popularity, but it was not until 1915 that it was practiced officially, when a famous Hawaiian swimmer named Duke Kahanamoku introduced the sport to Australia. (B)…

In international competitions, surfers are judged according to their take-offs and turns. They are also awarded points for the length of time they stay on the board as well as the difficulty of the wave. The competitors must be very fit with an excellent sense of timing and this involves a lot of hard work, discipline and training. (C)…

Once they have learned the art of perfect balance, skilled performers can perform spectacular tricks. They can turn in a complete circle on the face of a wave, fly out of the water above it, or ride up and down the face of a wave. The experts can really put on an impressive show!

Whether you are a world- champion surfer, or just enjoy bodysurfing and being swept along by the waves, surfing is a very exciting sport, both to take part in and to watch.

  1. Kahanamoku opened the world`s first surfing club in Waikiki, Hawaii, in 1920. The sport became more and more popular and soon it was being practiced all over the world. In 1960 the International Surfing Committee was formed and surfers began to take part in world championships.
  2. Many professional surfers train by running on the beach, bodybuilding and bodysurfing. Bodysurfing involves using your body as a surfboard and letting the waves carry you back to the shore. This helps to develop a sense of balance as well as the confidence to try more adventurous moves.
  3. There are many great surfing locations all around the world. Hawaii, Australia and California are the most famous, but surfers can catch a wave anywhere from Japan to Cornwall. Experienced surfers are always searching for great waves in undiscovered places where they can find their own private paradise.
  4. Surfing is believed to have originated in the Pacific Ocean around the Islands of Polynesia. In order to get from their ships to the shore, Polynesian sailors are said to have ridden on a wooden board, the original surf board. However, this sport was only seen for the first time by English sailors less than 300 years ago.

c) T. What are the most popular sports in our country?

P. Football, basketball, skiing, skating, hockey, swimming and so on are the most popular sports in our country.

III. T. Well done. As you know, there are a lot of different sports all over the world. Now let`s divide the words in the box into 3 groups ex.3, p. 120. Then  check   it.

IV. T. And now we are going to read the short texts below and match each person to the activity which is most suitable for them. I`ll give you about five minutes to read the text and do the task. There are two of the activities do not match.

A. Get Fit Quick.

  1. Kevin is not very keen on team sports. He wants something he can do his own. He wants a quiet activity that he can do whenever he has some spare time.
  2. Lucy is very energetic and she`s looking for a lively activity which she can do three times a week to help her to stay fit. She loves exercising to music.
  3. Terry would like to get fit and have fun at the same time. He also wants to do an activity will allow him to meet new people with similar interests. He loves team sport
  4. Jessica wants to go on a mountaineering holiday. She wants to get in plenty of practice before she goes.
  5. Chris really needs to get fit, but he hates exercising in groups and he isn`t motivated enough to go to the gym on his own.
  6. Helen and Josie are looking for a weekend activity which will be good for their social lives as well as their figures. They like dancing, listening to music and meeting people.

T. Let`s check your answers around the class. (1H, 2E, 3C, 4B, 5F, 6D.)

V. Now on the smartboard you can see the dialogue in which we are going to speak about a sport/game that we enjoy doing, the equipment needed and its advanteges/drawbacks. Let`s read it.

A: What`s your favourite sport?

B: Well, I really enjoy playing tennis.

A: What equipment do you need for it?

B: A tennis racquet and a ball.

A: What is it you like about tennis?

B: It`s a fast game and it keeps you fit.

A: What is it you don`t like about it?

B: You must be really fit to play.

VI. T. Now who wants to go to the blackboard and role play the dialogue.

VII. T. Very good. Let`s open your diaries and write down your home task. At home you should make up the dialogue about your favourite sport/game using our dialogue as a model.

VIII. T. In conclusion I`d like to ask the question. Why do people do sport? And I want you to answer.

P. People do sport because they want to be healthy.

P. They do sport because it helps them to keep fit.

P. As for me it helps me to look cool and athletic.

P. I think it helps us to relax and  to get rid of stress.

P. It helps us to lose weight.

P. In my opinion it`s in fashion.

IX. Well done, at our lesson we have already known much about aquatics, the history of surfing, about your favourite sport and have answered the question why people have to do sport. Thank you for your work. Your marks are…
