In the House of Commons Members of Parliament make all the important decisions and work on bills which later become laws. The Prime Minister is in the House of Commons. People elect the Members of House of Commons every 5 years. The party which has the most Members of Parliament wins the election and forms the government. Their leader becomes the Prime Minister.

Another House is the House of Lords. Some people inherit their places from their fathers and grandfathers. But most people in this House are life peers. They get their title « Lord » or « Lady » for their personal achievements. In the House of Lords people talk about bills before they become laws and suggest changes to the House of Commons.

Margaret Thatcher The 71st Prime Minister of G reat Britain in 1979-1990, the Baroness since 1992. She is the first woman who became the Prime Minister of a European state. Thatcher's Premiership was the longest in the XX century. She got the nickname "iron lady" for the harsh criticism of the Soviet leadership, she brought to life a number of conservative measures that became a part of the policy of so-called "Thatcherism".

The Queen is the head of state. She and the House of Lords have to approve the decisions of the House of Commons. She is the Queen of Great Britain from 1952 to the present. Elizabeth 2 ascended the throne on 6 February 1952 at the age of twenty-five after the death of his father, king George VI.
