I. Вступительная часть.

Teacher: Good morning, guys and girls.

Children: Good morning.

T: Nice to see you.

Ch: Nice to see you too.

T: Take your places. How are you?

Ch: Very well. Thank you. I am OK. Thank you. I'm fine. Not bad…

T: I am happy to hear that. Let's start our lesson. Today we'll speak about teens, subcultures, youth organizations.

II. Основная часть.

1) Brain storm.

Teacher: We shall begin our work with a brain storm. Think over and say what your associations with the topic "Subculture" are. Will you tell me all your suggestions?

Subculture: image, music, emo, Goth, clothes, values, punks, hippie...

2) Speaking.

T: I think it will be the plan of our lesson. P..., could you tell me what subculture is?

P 1: A subculture is a group with a distinct style and identity. Different subcultures have their own beliefs, value systems, fashion, and favourite music.

T: Ok! You are right. Now I invite you to discuss all these points in details. Today as you see we have not an usual lesson. You prepared some presentations about youth subcultures. Let’s start. Who will be the first? (Students present their reports about different subcultures – rappers, hackers, Goths, emo etc.).

Учащиеся представляют свои презентации классу. P1, P2, P3, P4…

T. That’s great that you are so well-prepared! I think that it was very interesting for everybody. And now let’s do some exercises for your eyes.

One, two, three, four.
Look at the window, look at the door,
Look at the ceiling, look at the floor.
One, two, three, four.

Good! Now we’ll do some physical exercises. (Выполняют упражнения)

3) “Discussion club”

Now you will be divided into two teams and one of you will be the judge with me. One team is called “Negative team” and another is “Positive team”. The topic for the discussion is “Youth subculture helps teenagers to express themselves”. You are given 5 minutes to prepare. The 1st pupil of each team gives his team’s opinion, he has 3 minutes. Then the 2nd pupil asks him questions and vice versa. Then the 2nd pupil adds some information and he is also asked some questions. The 3rd pupil makes a conclusion. Then the judges decide which team is the winner, they get 12.

(Учащиеся тянут карточки с «+» и «-», делятся на 2 команды. Один учащийся вытягивает карточку «J» и становится судьей вместе с учителем.)

(Возможные ответы учащихся)

P1: Teenagers choose a subculture because they want:

  • to change the world to the best
  • to show off
  • to rebel against the older generation
  • to have their own values and beliefs
  • to be in a collective
  • to differ from others
  • to differ from social norms
  • to oppose to the society/regime
  • to express their individuality
  • to show protest against school
  • to protest against parents
  • to make other people know who they are, etc

P2: My relation to subculture is different. Unfortunately, subculture influences on the man not from the best part, because majority of the members have some negative features. Usage of drugs, usage of alcohol, their behavior, which is out of the law in most cases, are some of them. They are Hippies, Punks, Goths, Bikers. Mods and Emoes are other, the better ones.

It seems to me, subculture was formed for the purpose the man would express his individuality, but it is not the only way to make it. Sport, for example, is extensible concept. I want to advise all people not to enter into such groups. They should say "No!"

I want to say: "Subculture is style of life for some people, but it’s bad style, because many young people kill themselves in most cases. So my relation to subculture is negative.

(Ученики под номером 2 задают вопросы номерам 1. Затем высказываются ученики под номером 2, номера 3 подводят итоги.)

T: Well, we heard all your opinions and now we are ready to make a conclusion and announce the winner. We suppose that team … was better because they gave more facts and they were more convincing… That’s why I congratulate you and give to all of you 12! But I thank all of you for your ideas and thoughts. Well done!

Now let’s summarize all the information. (Презентация «Teens. Subcultures. Organizations»).

T: 1. Goth wear the black clothes, with a lot of silvery jewellery and have very black hair and look as thin and pale as possible. They read Bram Stocker and talk about being vampires, and about the end of the world.

2. Punks are young people who dress in a shocking way to express their identity. They have brightly coloured hair and wear metal chains. They are thought to rebel against the society or the older generation. Their music is aggressive. They reject everything.

3. Members of one of the leading (in number) youth organizations in Britain. Scouts are trained to use their initiative, learn to use practical skills. Their moral values are loyalty and responsibility.

4. They are the 'wizards' of the computer community; people with a deep understanding of how their computers work, and can do things with them that seem 'magical' to express themselves. Hackers do not protest against their parents.

5. Emo occurs from the English word "emotion" and it is translated as emotional. To be Emo is to be themselves and not shy of its actions, emotions and desires.

6. A young person who wears a leather jacket, army boots just to show off is a rocker. He is associated with something rebellious.

7.  These are the folks who use computer-made, synthesized music, and drugs to create massive all-night dance parties. Ravers like to be in a collective. They want to try out all sorts of options and are thought to be violent and rebellious.

8. Bikers are persons who ride 2 or sometimes 3 wheeled motorised vehicles and who identify themselves with a special subculture. They usually wear leather jackets and army boots.

P 10: People who in their club get practical experience in agriculture, home crafts and country life are young farmers.

P 11: Some classify these people like drug users and rock and roll fans, since their behaviour and attitudes differ from social norms. Hippies don't conform to society's standards and support a liberal attitude and lifestyle. They accept other people as they are. They always want to change the world for the best.

P 12: Environmentalists are concerned about nature and want to improve or protect our Earth. Usually they join Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth. They prefer non-violent direct actions to solve ecological problems. Earnest Gekkel is the first ecologist in the world. It is he, who in 1866 used the word "ecology" thus calling a science about life of animals and their relation to the environment.

P 13: Volunteers do voluntary work in the community, help needy people, children and animals.

III. Заключительная часть.

T: Well, it’s time to complete the lesson. I’d like to say that I’m quite satisfied with your work at the lesson today. I’m pleased with the answers and activities of some students.
I hope the lesson was interesting for you. Thank you very much.

Home assignment:

T: Well, it’s time to write down your homework for the next lesson.
– You should revise the rules of the Sequence of Tenses, we’ll write test.

Parting:

Teacher: Well, the lesson is over. Good-bye.

1. Today the life of many young people in many countries of the world is influenced by popular culture. The young follow certain stereotypes that are imposed on them through TV, movies, and music. In their lifestyle they try to imitate the images of their idols. Other young people are sports and music fans. They follow their idols in their tours and support them. Different subcultures have their own beliefs, value systems, fashion, and favourite music

Teenagers choose a subculture because they want:

  • to change the world to the best
  • to show off
  • to rebel against the older generation
  • to have their own values and beliefs
  • to be in a collective
  • to differ from others
  • to differ from social norms
  • to oppose to the society/regime
  • to express their individuality
  • to show protest against school
  • to protest against parents
  • to make other people know who they are, etc

2. There are other subcultures that are not connected with music, and have a specific ideology. For example skinheads, which wore heavy boots, jeans and braces and shave their hair or cut it very short. Skinheads dreamed about the revival of the traditional working class culture. Skinheads were identified with extreme right wing views. Among other subcultures are Hippies, Punks, Mods, Rockers, Ravers and many others. Subcultures are not that bad as they are thought to be. Teens want to show off. But at the same time a lot of teens think about changing the world to the best. Subcultures are for mostly for young and creative. Then, I am sure, teenagers become good citizens. Some who were punks became the main editors of famous newspapers. A subculture is a way of life. It is not a fan club, it is an attributive feature of a real life.

3. We think that subculture is useful. Firstly, youth people meet with each other and hear many new things. Secondly, people take part in meetings, where they listen to music and rest. Thirdly, the men help each other, when member of group need to help.

Teen can show his individuality, teen expresses disagreement with parents and the world. If teenager belongs to some subculture, it means he doesn’t see comprehension from parents, teachers, other people. But teen can be curious and he enters the subculture, because it’s interesting and fun.

I don`t think that subculture is a universal evil, because it doesn`t bring death and a lot of tears. I hope what teens, which belong to some subculture will remember about heir teenage years with smile and without bitter regrets.

-

Sport, for example, is extensible consept. I want to advise all people not to enter into such groups. They should say "No!"

In my opinion, subculture unite people only in within the limits of one or other group. It result in disagreements and hostility between men of different subcultures. I think, that subculture is not useful. We do not need in it, in order to meet with men. We should not imitate in style of life, mentality, because it deprives their individuality and often lead to bad.

I want to say: "Subculture is style of life for some people, but it`s bad style, because many young people kill themselves in most cases. So my relation to subculture is negative"

2. The members of subcultures are very agressive to other people, for example, skinheads, rockers, bikers. Other subcultures are agressive to each other. That’s why some people fear them. Secondly, some members of subcultures look untraditionally and I don`t like their styles. Thirdly, subculture changes man, who chooses subculture instand good life, good school knowledge, good relaitions with parents, etc. These are bad points.

To crown it all, I want to tell that untraditional young people will always exist and we should`t try to destroy them.

3. Yet, not all groups are peaceful. Some of them are rather rebellious. Sadly, some of them are prepared to physically hurt people in an attempt to get their message across. For example, punks are opposed to the values, norms and materialism in the society. They express this in loud and violent music, strange clothing and hair of unusual colours.

A subculture is a way of life. It isn’t a fan club, it’s a real life. It seems to them that the parents are always saying: No! That everything about them: their hair, their music, clothes, the way they talk, their dreams are considered bad by grown-ups. The young people are unsure of where they are going. So it’s a way of having something that they can say they belong to and that they are “whatever”.

Often young people do something not because they want to do it. They do things because everybody around does or because they think it’s impolite to refuse.
