  1. The profession of an architect does not always get the fame of other artists like painters or sculptors. People admire the most beautiful works of architecture but seldom know the person who designed them. Buildings shelter and protect us throughout our lives, yet we never learn the names of those who made our own living comfortable.
  2. Architecture first began to develop as a distinct discipline in Italy during the early Renaissance period. Until that time the designer of buildings was not a recognized profession like the painter or the sculptor. There were no schools for those who wished to take up architecture, and the men who made the plans for churches and palaces were seen as artisans.
  3. The first architect who practiced in the way that we know the profession today was Palladio who worked in the Venetian Republic in the 16th century Italy. He built his career working for the Venetian nobles for whom he designed villas, palaces and country estates. His place in history as an architect is based on the beauty of his works and their harmony with the culture of the time.
  4. Although known today more for his painting and sculpture, the great Michelangelo was also a talented architect. Michelangelo’s most famous contribution to architecture is the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica. It stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world.
  5. One of the first Englishmen to call himself “architect” was John Shute. Shute’s origins are unknown, but he seems to have trained as a painter and was sent to Italy in 1550 by his patron, the Duke of Northumberland. His book, The First and Chief Grounds of Architecture, was the first work in English on classical architecture. It lay the foundations of the art and became a respectable source of professional knowledge.
  6. One of the most highly acclaimed English architects in history was Sir Christopher Wren. Wren was a professor of astronomy at Oxford who came to architecture through his interest in physics and engineering. He rebuilt 52 churches in the City of London after the Great Fire in 1666, including his masterpiece, St. Paul’s Cathedral.
  7. The world famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright called architecture “the mother art,” explaining: “Without architecture civilization has no soul.” Buildings are both a practical necessity and an artistic expression of a culture. It is to be admitted that architecture is the art we live in.

An Au Pair’s Tale

Amanda Harrison was 18 and had just left school. She wanted a year out — a year of fun, travel and excitement far from home. And like many British girls of her age she went to the States to work as an au pair. She had read a lot about this profession for a young lady who lives with a family in a foreign country and takes care of a small baby. In exchange the lady gets an opportunity to live and work independently of her own family. That was exactly what Amanda wanted. Amanda’s parents were not happy about their daughter’s decision but finally had to agree.

Amanda went to live in Boston with a married couple. She had been told by the agency they had just had a baby, so the mother needed help with the new born girl.

From the very start Amanda was impressed by her new home. She liked everything: the city, the beautiful house with a huge swimming pool and the two wonderful Dalmatians that met her at the gates when she arrived in July. But most of all she was impressed by her hosts. They were hospitable and friendly, and their new born daughter was a real princess — charming and cute.

Everything was like a dream for Amanda. She was abroad on her own in a wealthy house taking care of a baby and already planning how to spend her first salary. But the dream didn’t last long. The mother’s attitude to Amanda changed very soon. She became rude and demanding, and often started to shout at Amanda if anything went wrong.

Once the girl was asked to warm up the baby’s bottle with milk. Amanda fixed the timer of the electric device at 7 minutes instead of 5, and the milk got too hot. The baby started crying as soon as she tasted the milk, obviously burning her mouth. The mother threw the bottle at Amanda, splashing the milk all over Amanda’s dress. And then the woman made Amanda wash the kitchen floors. When the weekend after the incident came, Amanda was forbidden to have her weekend, and instead was left alone with the baby. The parents went to the countryside and spent two days at their friend’s house. Amanda felt that what was happening was not right but she was too proud to tell her own parents about it.

Things were getting worse and worse. The mother expected Amanda to do the most difficult job about the house: to wash the dogs and even to clean out the swimming pool. At the same time the young girl had to look after the baby 24 hours a day. Amanda had total responsibility for the house and the child. That could not last any longer.

Luckily, Amanda knew another au pair who worked in Boston. She talked to her and the friend immediately called the agency which had found the job for Amanda. They explained the situation, and in two days Amanda got a return ticket and the money for the trip back to England.

She had spent four months in Boston. On returning home she kissed her parents and said: “Forgive me. And never ever let me go far away from you”.

  1. You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen friend Bill.

...Last week our class met with a careers advisor. We were given advice on how to choose our future profession. I got a lot of useful information. Honestly, I want to become a film director and shoot a world famous film one day! My parents believe in me and support me in my decision.

What have you already decided on your future career? What will you do if your parents don’t agree with your decision? Who is the best person to go for advice when you need to make you career choice, why?

Write Bill a letter and answer his 3 questions.

Write 100—120 words. Remember the rules of letter writing.

Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.

A job hopper is someone who works briefly in one position after another rather than staying at any one job or organization long-term. Although most people change jobs more frequently than was the case in the past, job hoppers do so more often. Years ago, it was not uncommon for people to work for the same employer their entire careers. In recent decades, however, people typically change jobs at least a few times through their careers. Some employers are still reluctant to hire job hoppers. Others, however, would prefer to see applicants with a few jobs on their resumes to those who have stayed in one job for a long time. Employers often fear such individuals are resistant to change or simply unmotivated. People who have worked in a number of different capacities and in different corporate environments, on the other hand, are likely to have a broader range of skills and be more adaptable.

Task 2. You are going to take part in a telephone survey. You have to answer six questions. Give full answers to the questions.

Remember that you have 40 seconds to answer each question.

Task 3. You are going to give a talk about work and career. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10-12 sentences).

Remember to say:

  1. what career you would like to choose, and why;
  2. what skills and qualities you need to have a successful career;
  3. what professions are popular with young people today.

You have to talk continuously.

1. BUILDING NEW RELATIONS

2. RENT A GRANNY

3. CARE AND SUPPORT

4. KEEPING FAMILY TOGETHER

5. PLAYING FAVOURITES

6. GOING OUT TOGETHER

7. FAMILY VIOLENCE

8. DIFFICULT RELATIVE

  1. Of course, as your children grow, marry and have children of their own, it is not as easy to spend each holiday together. Be flexible and either alternate holidays or pick a few specific holidays where the entire family will be together. Sometimes it sounds like an overwhelming feat, especially if you have a large family, but as I said, children, even when they become adults, need those special occasions and traditions and they will go out of their way to make sure they happen.
  2. If you are lucky enough to have a sister, you already know that is a special bond unlike any other. Many factors can affect your relationship with your sister as you get older, however, such as age differences, geographic location, new family responsibilities - even sibling rivalry!
  3. If your sister-in-law is much younger than you, then it will be very easy for you to win her over. Little girls love spending time with their big brother’s girlfriends, and you’re this little girl’s big brother’s wife, so she’s going to be elated to spend time with you. Play together with Barbie dolls, or ask her to help you decorate some Christmas cookies. Become her friend, and take an active interest in her, and she will love you forever.
  4. When parents are surveyed on the subject of favoritism, nearly all respondents say that despite their best efforts to the contrary, they have favored one child over another at least occasionally. “I see the frustration and behavior problems in our oldest child resulting from the favoritism their father shows our youngest child,” said one parent in response to a recent Vision survey on the topic. “It is a very serious problem in our family.”
  5. A new "grannies-for-rent" service in Poland brings together elderly people without families, and people who miss having real grandparents. A local University for the Elderly set up the programme, which aims to benefit people from all generations.
  6. Unfortunately for many, home can be anything but a safe haven. Men and women alike may find their home a fierce battleground. For children it may be where they are most vulnerable to assault, misuse or deprivation, ironically at the very hands of those who have a duty to safeguard and nourish them. Even the elderly may have reason to fear those who should be their caretakers.
  7. Parents give an enormous amount to their children, and as a result they’re extremely invested in them, in helping them grow and thrive. They look out for their interests, stay up with them when they’re sick, clean up their messes when they’re sick - all of that investment helps the child grow and feel secure.

Frequency of Cheating

Relationship cheating is a very common occurrence. If you haven’t experienced it yet, there’s a good chance you eventually will.

I found it difficult to track down good cheating statistics. Slightly more than half of all married people will cheat on their spouses at some point in their lives. Men apparently cheat more often than women, but the gap isn’t huge.

Most of the time cheating does occur, the other spouse doesn’t know about it, with women being in the dark slightly more often than men.

That’s if you’re married. If you’re in a committed relationship but aren’t married, then I’d imagine that the odds of cheating are even higher. Partly I say that because cheating is more common when you’re younger and becomes less likely as you age.

The big game-changer here is the Internet, which makes even 10-year old stats seem very dated now. Recent surveys suggest that most people have flirted online at one point or another, that when people spend time in chat rooms they’re usually motivated by romantic interest, and that about a third of adults have had real relations as a result of a connection that began online.

In the USA alone, tens of millions of people cheat on their primary relationship partners. Most of the time when people cheat, they hide it from their partners, and they usually succeed in doing so, not because they’re so great at keeping secrets but mainly because their partners fail to recognize and acknowledge the telltale signs.

Statistically speaking, if you get involved in committed relationships or marriage, the odds are better than 50–50 that you’re eventually going to cheat at some point in your life. And you’ll probably hide it from your primary partner, and you’ll probably get away with it.

Of course you can decline to join this group if you desire so. However, there’s still a good chance you’ll end up in a relationship with someone else who’s a member, and you probably won’t know. Or you’ll know, but you’ll retreat into denial about it.

The Oxford dictionary defines the word “family” as “a group of people consisting of two parents and their children, or who are related by blood or marriage”. Of course, there are many variants of that definition - but what they all have in common is the notion of people protecting each other. Family is such an emotive word that a dictionary definition will always struggle to pin it down. It is a core element of personal economy; one of the things that defines who we are and how we see ourselves. It gives us a sense of place in the world. For many young people family is a safety net to fall back on as we go out and create strong bonds with others. It’s all change again when it’s time to start families of our own. Then, we become the protector and source of stability for our own children.

  1. Variety helps socializing
  2. The Net socializing
  3. Negative socializing
  4. Fears of loneliness
  5. Socializing dominates education
  6. Eager to socialize
  7. Family socializing
  8. Kids need more socializing

А. Most students that don’t have any friends at school get depressed or something because they feel lonely, down, and that nobody wants to talk to them. They also might get those phobia things, like for instance, being insecure when talking to someone, or people, for one of the “first” times. So therefore, when a teacher calls them, they might feel uncomfortable with answering. They also might have stuff going through their heads and can’t focus on a test, worksheet, or whatever class assignment.

В.  In many instances, the failure to socialize may be a key factor in qualifying for special education. It is one of the triad of feature for a diagnosis of autism, for example. Special education has a very strong emphasis on inclusion, which in significant part provides for increased social interaction. Learning how to get by in society is an absolutely key component to education, irrespective of whether it is the subject of a performance test.

С. In order to get through school properly you need to be able to socialize. It is especially important for little children. That’s why in my early childhood education course we are learning that developing ways of having healthy social interactions is so important for children.

D. Various societies have varied socializing skills among their members. It does not mean that one culture is superior to others. It just depends on the way that the civilization under study has progressed. A civilization which has cultivated its young generation with a common set of rules and a uniform educational system is more likely to be at harmony. But on the other hand in the United States of America each minor community brings its culture, its ethnicity and their customs. Having so many socializing influences makes the society more tolerant.

E.  My boyfriend used to go out clubbing all the time. But I’m an introvert and I can’t stand that way of easy living.  I told him how it made me feel but he says he wants to start going out more, he says socializing is part of his path in life. I asked him what it would be like if we had our own place, he said he would be working all day and then out socializing every night except for the weekends, then he would spend it with me, this is what he would be like if we lived together.

F.  Every time I use Myspace, Facebook or Bebo, I have a chance to socialize. I use these websites to talk to old friends and make new friends, but the thing is I never ever get that chance to meet a friend, it would be cool to try that, but I don’t know what socializing websites guarantee that, I would like a safe teen site, where I can meet and make cool mates.

G. There are two types of socializing, depending on the nature of factors that influence them. One is positive when a person learns through good and happy experiences. Parents teaching their kids from their experiences, learning from books or from peers are some example of positive socializing. Positive socializing can take on the form of natural socializing and planned socializing.

I have a problem socializing with girls

I try to follow the rule ‘treat others the way you want to be treated’. But the thing I’ve realized is that a lot less seems to bother me than bothers girls. If a girl told me something like ‘I really like you but you’re in a dead end job and I am accustomed to a more expensive lifestyle therefore I wouldn’t compromise.’ I would just say okay.

I don’t know, but the way I am, I prefer if people tell me the truth like that so at least I know what’s wrong and maybe I can do better next time. However with girls I noticed telling the truth gets me hated. Girls call me rude and everything. I started lying to girls in college recently and I managed to get back relations pretty easily so I can imagine why lots of guys do it.
The interesting thing is the girls seem to suspect that I’m lying but they still smile and go along with it anyway. Telling girls what they want to hear gets me much further than I used to get. I always had difficulty lying to people because of my morals but these results are astonishing. Women always shun me for telling the cold hard truth so I didn’t know what to do. So I just started doing what got results.

Writers have the reputation for being solitary. However, every now and then they forge bonds of friendship with one another. Hemingway and Fitzgerald met in Paris in 1925. Fitzgerald had already published a few novels. Hemingway had not even published his first yet. But despite of feelings of jealousy and competitiveness the two became close friends. Fitzgerald even helped edit ‘The Sun Also Rises’. Fantasy giants Lewis and Tolkien first met at Oxford University, where the two both belonged to a group of writers known as The Inklings. They had a very intimate friendship, Tolkien even playing a key role in converting Lewis to Christianity. That is not to say their friendship was perfect, however. They bickered over the quality of each other’s work, and they finally drifted apart when Lewis took up with an American widow.

Task 2. You are going to take part in a telephone survey. You have to answer six questions. Give full answers to the questions.

Remember that yon have 40 seconds to answer each question.

Task 3. You are going to give a talk about education. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10-12 sentences).

Thomas Alva Edison

A. Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor and businessman. He developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. He was one of the first inventors who applied the principles of mass production and teamwork to the process of invention. He created the first industrial research laboratory. He had a great number of patents in the USA, the UK, France and Germany.

B Thomas Edison was born in Ohio, and grew up in Michigan. He was the seventh child. In school, the young Edison’s mind often wandered and his teacher called him “addled” (испорченный). This ended Edison’s three months of official schooling. Edison recalled later: “M\ mother made me. She was so true, so sure of me; and I felt I had something to live for, someone I must not disappoint.” His mother taught him at home. Much of his education came from reading R.G. Parker’s School of Natural Philosophy.

C Edison developed hearing problems at an early age. The cause of his deafness was scarlet fever during childhood but his story was different: a train conductor struck his ears when his chemical laboratory in a boxcar (товарный вагон) caught fire. Later he used to say the injury had occurred when the conductor, in helping him onto a moving train, lifted him by the ears. However, the injury didn’t keep him from research.

D His family wasn’t rich. Edison sold candy and newspapers on trains running from Port Huron to Detroit, and sold vegetables. He also studied qualitative analysis, and conducted chemical experiments on the train until an accident made further work of the kind impossible. Edison got the exclusive right to sell newspapers on the road, and, with the aid of four assistants, he set and printed the Grand Trunk Herald, which he sold with his other papers. Thus he discovered his talents as a businessman. These talents eventually led him to found 14 companies, including General Electric, which is still one of the largest companies in the world.

E The invention that first gained him notice was the phonograph in 1877. This accomplishment was so unexpected it seemed almost magical. After his demonstration of the telegraph, Edison sold it to Western Union that gave him a chance to set up the company Menlo Park with the specific purpose of producing constant technological innovation and improvement. Edison was legally attributed with most of the inventions produced there, though many employees carried out research and development under his direction. His patents included inventions or processes that are electrical, mechanical, or chemical in nature.

Liverpool and the Beatles

On Wednesday 24th October 1962, Love Me Do, entered the British Top Thirty. It was the first single by an unknown group from Liverpool called the Beatles. It was the first of a number of big hits that would make John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr the most successful pop group the world has ever known.

However, the road to success was not always easy. John and Paul had spent many afternoons listening to American stars like Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley before they were able to write the famous Lennon and McCartney songs.

Although the long evenings spent playing in hot nightclubs in Liverpool and Hamburg in Germany had not earned them much money, they found the experience very useful when playing to huge audiences later on.

Not only was their style of singing new and exciting but their unusual haircuts and crazy sense of humour immediately became the latest fashion.

One of the most important people at the start of their careers was Brian Epstein, a Liverpoolian record-dealer. He managed to change four ordinary working-class lads into international superstars. George Martin, their record producer, encouraged them to introduce all kinds of unusual instruments on their records and combine popular and classical styles in a new and original way.

During the 1960s, the Beatles were always in the news headlines; films, world tours and sometimes scandal. John once suggested that the Beatles were better known than Jesus Christ. This caused hundreds of young Americans to burn their Beatle records. In addition some people thought there were hidden messages about drugs in some of the songs.

After a decade of successful music and films, the Beatles finally decided to break up in the early seventies, after public disagreements about money and personalities.

Although many fans hoped there would be a reunion throughout the 1970s, this became impossible with the tragic murder of John Lennon in New York in 1980.

The surviving Beatles are still deeply involved in musical and film projects, but many fans still long for the music of the 60s.

А.  Between December 2003 and December 2005, total TV reach declined but the biggest fall was among young people – it fell by 2.9% for 16 –24 year-olds. During 2005, reach declined by 2.2% in that age group. Reach is defined as at least 15 minutes of consecutive TV viewing in a week. Industry figures say the decline could be due to the growth of the internet. DVDs and gaming could also be factors, they said.

В.  Digital Spy is a showbiz, entertainment and digital media community. It is the UK’s largest independent entertainment website generating over 90 million monthly page impressions. Digital Spy is also renowned for its extensive and unique coverage of Big Brother each year. The discussion forums have more than 290,000 registered users and 28.3 million posts.

С. Young people (8–18) devote an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes to using entertainment media across a typical day (more than 53 hours a week), increasing by one hour and seventeen minutes a day over the past five years, according to a new study, Generation M2: Media in the Lives of 8- to 18-Year-Olds, designed and analyzed by the Kaiser Family Foundation and Stanford University researchers.

The increase in media use is driven in large part by ready access to mobile devices like cell phones and iPods. Young people now spend more time listening to music, playing games, and watching TV on their cell phones (a total of 49 min. daily) than they spend talking on them (33 min.).

D. When I plan my parties, I spend time thinking about the menu, the music, the table settings, centerpieces and all the other little details that go into making a wonderful event. But the first thing I really focus on is my guests. After all, that’s the real reason for all the rest. They are usually my friends and I try to do my best to adjust my party to each of our company.

E.  He writes a blog, downloads Korean television shows, manages two Web sites devoted to music and plays an online game called Rongguang Hospital, at Baidu.com. “I started doing a lot of this when I was about 11 years old,” says Mr. Li, a freshman at the Shanghai Maritime University. “Now, I spend most of my leisure time on the Internet,” he says. “There’s nowhere else to go.”

F.  Additionally, anyone under 18 and out of childhood has severely limited options when it comes to entertainment. Just about everybody has experienced the frustration of being under 18 and having nowhere to go apart from the movies or the zoo. Most young people are interested in popular music, but beyond their TV and radio, there’s very little offered to them. Essentially, any licensed premises are out of bounds which creates an enormous void in popular music options.

G. This survey was done in March 2010 (Term 1), and so it is not surprising that summer Hollywood blockbusters featured in the films listed by students as the most enjoyable film they’d watched recently. The top 5 films were Alice in Wonderland, Avatar, Shutter Island, Valentine’s Day and The Hangover. It is interesting to note that 3 of the top 5 films have unrestricted ratings.

In most ways, Sarah McCarthy is your average high schooler. She has a job, college plans, but also a peculiar passion for a 16-year-old: She’s a vinyl junkie. And none of that hipster new stuff. To this senior high school student, there’s nothing like the raw crackle, the depth of sound, her delicate hand on diamond-tipped stylus to spin from the dusty stash of records she found in the basement of her grandfather.

“He gave me his receiver and speaker system and told me to listen to it the way it was made to be listened to,” McCarthy said. “I’ve turned a lot of my friends on to it. They come over a lot to listen with me.”

At a time when parents feel positively prehistoric as they explain how to use plastic ice-cube trays or speak of phones with cords and dials, this teen knows what a record is. Not only that, she knows the difference between a 45 and an LP. She met her boyfriend in a record shop and now works there.

“Listening to old music remastered to a newer format is almost comical,” Sarah said. “They weren’t meant to be digitalised. Listening to Jimi Hendrix on my iPod doesn’t capture his endlessly deep guitar solos quite like a 33 LP of ‘Blues’ does.”

A. The effect of exercise on sleep according to a study published in the February 1997 issue of “Sleep,” exercise enhanced the sleep quality of the older adult participants. Specifically, aerobic exercise can aid sleep by helping you doze off faster and sleep better. But another study, published in the June 2009 “Journal of Sleep and Sleep Disorders Research,” found that sleep didn’t improve with increased exercise. Workouts stimulate you and your metabolism, so avoid exercise right before bed. Consider body temperature as well. A cool body temperature helps to encourage sleep, so allow for a cool-down period well before bedtime. Late afternoon exercise is optimal.

B. Speed skating requires strength, precision, power and quickness. While some sports such as long-distance running require slow, steady muscle contraction, speed skating involves high-speed contractions that are considered explosive or power moves. To get speed skater legs, the Pittsburgh Speed Skating Club recommends a training program including power moves such as bounce jumps, broad jumps and jump thrust squats.

C. The U.S. Surgeon General recommends that healthy adults get 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day. By taking 10,000 steps every day, you can reach this level of activity. A pedometer is an excellent way to track your steps. It also helps establish a baseline for your normal activity level so you know how much more activity you need.

D. Once dieters decide to change their eating habits for weight loss purposes, many focus on solid foods alone. However, the amount of calories you ingest from drinks like soda, fruit juice and alcohol may be the true culprit for excess fat storage. Making simple changes to your beverage consumption habits may be the ticket to losing unwanted body fat. Good old-fashioned water is one of the best drinks to help you lose body fat. Not only is it usually free and helps cleanse toxins out of your body, but it may also help to boost your metabolism. You should drink at least six to eight glasses a day. Try adding a splash of lemon or lime to give it a zesty flavor.

E. Astronauts must maintain their physical fitness levels while they work aboard the International Space Station. Exterior equipment maintenance and repair may require energy-sapping spacewalks; astronauts must also be prepared to execute physically taxing emergency landing operations aboard their transport vehicles. At the same time, astronauts lose bone and muscle mass while they live in a gravity-free environment. A well-structured exercise program provides the astronauts with the best chance to maintain physical readiness.

F. A 2007 study in the “Journal of the American Medical Assosciation” found that people who exercise regularly live longer due to a number of factors. According to Wojtek Chodzko-Zajko, head of the department of kinesiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, individuals who are middle-aged have an average muscle mass loss of approximately 1 percent per year. Strength training offsets this muscle loss later in life, translating to fewer falls, which is among the leading causes of death in the elderly. A 2009 study in the “American Journal of Neuroradiology” found that older individuals who exercise at least 180 minutes per week for 10 consecutive years also have brain blood vessel activity similar to that of younger individuals, providing neurologic longevity.

G. On your journey to health and well-being, there may come a point when you cannot exercise. For example, you may need a workout break or suffer an illness or injury. Fortunately, while you are recoverring, you can stay fit by avoiding the consumption of bad foods, like donuts and cheeseburgers. While this may sound easy, fast food restaurants are located on every corner and avoiding unhealthy foods is a challenge. However, not eating bad foods may help keep you in shape until you can hit that treadmill again.

My Toughest Workout: Olympic Triple Jumper Christian Taylor

Though he’s also a top competitor in the long jump and 400-meter relay, Christian Taylor narrowed his goals. Now he wants to beat the world record in the triple jump.
“The coach says it’s better to exceed in one than to be average in several,” he says.

Taylor’s personal best, 17.96, won him gold at the World Championships in South Korea in 2011. Finally, he’s looking to top the world record, set by Jonathan Edwards at 18.29 in 1995.

He hopes that the Olympic crowds will help him get more energetic.

“That’s my fuel, my energy source,” he explains. “I’m a big believer in feeding off the energy of the people around you.”

There is another thing that will help him fly. A 2-minute drill that he likes to do with Will Claye, a former teammate of Taylor’s at the University of Florida who will also be representing the U.S. in London.

The drill is a series of jumps that tests consistency, stamina and mental toughness. The goal is to hit the same mark as many times as you can. “It’s a really intense workout,” Taylor says. “After the first minute, when it really hits you, you are just burnt out.”

It’s that kind of power that he’s used to propel himself to the top. “I wouldn’t call myself a competitor or an athlete if I wasn’t trying to be the best, ever,” he says. “I feel like I am flying, and I get so excited that I want to come back down and see where I am.”

The drill is simple, but exhausting. Taylor repeats a triple jump as many times as he can in two minutes. As soon as he hits the sand, he runs back to the starting mark and repeats, trying to hit the same mark each time. He performs two sets with a 20-minute rest in between, just because it’s so rough. In two minutes, he estimates he gets about 20 jumps in.

The jump drill is part of a set that includes a lot of technical work, sprinting, and jumping. His warm-up lasts about 45 minutes (little bounds, accelerations, 60–75 meter sprints). Then he goes to the runway for light drills, standing long jumps, alternating bounds, little things to wake up the fast-twitch muscles. That’s when he starts going into the different jump drills, like the one above. But he also adds medicine ball drills, as well as weights work.

It’s hard to say what will really help Christian Taylor to win, his self assurance that he must win or long trainings every day with the set of exercises.

A 7         Christian Taylor is the champion in the long jump.

If you rely on coffee to get through the day, or just to get it started, you might be lacking sleep or something in your diet. Nobody, after all, is ever going to ________ coffee for health food.
But like wine, chocolate and popcorn, coffee has joined the ranks of ________ foods with health benefits. You have 30 minutes to do this task.

You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen friend Kevin.

… I think that keeping fit is very easy to discuss but difficult to do…

You know I want to have some job at the weekend. When is it better to start? Is there really any good part-time jobs? Is it easy to find such a job?

Write a letter to him and answer his 3 questions.

Write 100–120 words. Remember the rules of letter writing.

Task 1. You need to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.

Many people catch a cold in the springtime and fall. It makes us wonder... if scientists can send a man to the moon, why can't they find a cure for the common cold. The answer is easy. There are literally hundreds of kinds cold viruses out there. You never know which one you will get, so there isn't a cure for each one. When a virus attacks your body, your body works hard to get rid of it. Blood rushes to your nose and brings congestion with it. You feel terrible because you can't breathe well, but your body is actually "eating" the virus. Your temperature rises and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing the virus. You may feel miserable, but actually your wonderful body is doing everything it can to kill the cold.

Task 2. Take part in a telephone survey. You have to answer six questions.

Give full answers to the questions.

Remember that you have 60 seconds to answer each question.

Task 3. You are going to give a talk about keeping fit. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10-12 sentences).

Remember to say:

·         why a healthy lifestyle is more popular nowadays

·         what you do to keep fit

·         what sports activities are popular with teenagers in your region

  1.  Strong desire to learn                  5.        Endless process
  2.  Ways of expressing ideas        6.        Using words without thinking
  3.  Forming language habits        7.        Speak to native-speakers
  4.  Two groups of words                  8.        Importance of practicing
  1.  Learning English is like learning to swim or learning to play ball. We learn to swim by swimming, to play ball by playing ball, and to speak English by speaking English. A good ballplayer spends hours, days, months, and even years practising. The more he practises, the better he plays. He has to learn to meet the situations of the game as they arise and react to them immediately.
  2.  And so it is when we are talking. The ideas we wish to express come instantly to our mind but there is no time for us to stop and think of how to put together the words we need. Acquiring the ability to use a language automatically, that is without stopping to think is a process of habit formation. Forming a habit, any kind of habit, requires much practice.
  3.  Every language has patterns that are basic and fundamental. Every language has a body of common words used by all the speakers of that language and thousands of other words that are used less frequently. We can understand and read many words and structures that we cannot use in speaking and writing.
  4. Every language has many ways of saying the same things. If you wish to ask the time, you say; "What time is it?", "Do you have the time?", "What time have you got?", "Will you tell me the time", etc.
  5.  Learning English efficiently requires that you put your mind on what you are doing and have the intention and the will to learn. The time you have is so short that you cannot afford to waste it by giving less than your full co-operation in class and in home study. In other words, you have to build up language habits in English just as you build up language habits in your mother tongue.
  6.  Knowing English, as well as knowing your own language, is a relative matter. You will never finish learning either. Your freedom in each of them is something to be learned through your own effort. Language is not to be taught, language is to be learnt.
  7. Good luck to you then, in your learning of English. It's up to you. Nobody can learn to swim for you. Nobody can learn English for you. You have to learn for yourself, and you will learn if you really want to and are willing to practise.

  1. International language                         5.        Former British colonies
  2. English was not for everyone               6.        The Norman conquest of England
  3. American English                         7.        Efficient ways to learn English
  4. Necessary for communication       8.        English-speaking countries
  1.  The problem of learning languages is very important today. Foreign languages are socially demanded especially at the present time when the progress in science and technology has led to an explosion of knowledge and has contributed to an overflow of information. The total knowledge of mankind is known to double every seven years. Foreign languages are needed as the main and the most efficient means of information exchange of the peoples.
  2.  Today English is the language of the world. Over 300 million people speak it as a mother tongue. The native speakers of English live in Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America. English is one of the official languages in the Irish Republic, Canada, the South African Republic. As a second language it is used in the former British and US colonies.
  3.  English is not only the national or official language of some thirty states which represent different cultures, but it is also the major international language for communication in such areas as science, technology, business and mass entertainment. English is one of the official languages of the United Nations Organisation and other political organisations. It is the language of literature, education, modem music, international tourism.
  4.  What did the Norman Conquest do to England? It gave it French kings and nobles who brought with them the French language. After the Norman Conquest there were three languages in England. There was Latin, the language of the church in which all learned men wrote and spoke. Then there was French, the language which the kings and nobles spoke and wrote. Finally, there was the English language which remained the language of poor people who did not understand French or Latin but spoke only English.
  5.  So far there is no universal or ideal method of learning languages. Everybody has his own way. Sometimes it is boring to study grammar or to learn new words. But it is well known that reading original books in English, listening to the BBC news, communicating with the English speaking people will help a lot. When learning a foreign language you leam the culture and history of native speakers.
  6.  The conquest of England by the Normans began in 1066 with the battle of Hastings, where the English fought against the Normans. The conquest was complete in 1086. Who were these Normans who conquered England? They were Vikings or 'Norsemen', men from the North. Some 150 years before the conquest of England they came to a part of France, opposite England, a part which we now call Normandy.
  7. The beginning of 1600th was the English colonization of North America and the creation of an American dialect. Some pronunciations and usages didn’t change when they reached the American shore. In certain respects, American English is closer to the English of Shakespeare than modem British English is. Some "Americanisms" are actually originally British expressions that were preserved in the colonies while lost at home (e.g., fall as a synonym for autumn, trash for rubbish, loan as a verb instead of lend).

A Mystery of Learning Languages

Can a new language be learnt in six weeks as some courses promise? Learning a language is not an easy task, though the reason why it is so difficult cannot be explained without an understanding of how human language is acquired, and unfortunately, no-one knows exactly how it is done. Linguists have many theories, but it is still a mystery and one that may never be fully solved. Since hard and fast facts about first language acquisition are in short supply, it is not surprising to find that there are numerous competing theories on how best to learn a second or third language. One thing is certain, though, it doesn't happen overnight. Or does it?

One theory that has been promoted for some years now is that of subliminal language learning - taking words into your mind while not consciously aware of them. Play a cassette tape of words and phrases you wish to learn while you are asleep or perhaps while driving a car. It doesn't matter if you listen to them or not, or even if the words are within your normal range of hearing. Your brain will 'hear' the words and store them deep within your mind, ready for easier extraction when you practice certain exercises containing those words and phrases.

The argument goes like this: when you learnt your own language you had been spoken to and were constantly exposed to words in that language from the day you were born and possibly even before you were born. Yes, babies react to words spoken to them inside the mother's womb. This constant exposure ensured that the words were already planted in your mind before you actually learnt them. The subliminal method, then, is based on similar principles. Even having the TV or radio on all day in another language serves the same purpose. But best results come from playing tapes with specially selected words and phrases over and over again.

Recent surveys seem to indicate that early success in learning a foreign language requires at least two other conditions to be met. First of all, the range of vocabulary you need to learn should be restricted. It has been known for decades now that most of what one needs to say everyday in the English language can be effectively communicated with a vocabulary of just 760 words. Secondly, the practice you do needs to focus on manipulations of those very same words. When starting to learn a language, reading the newspaper in that language is largely a waste of time - there are far too many new words to learn. Later, of course, reading all kinds of material in the new language is essential.

Remember that learning a language is something you have already managed. All of us are constantly, if not always consciously, engaged in increasing the knowledge of our own language, and the language itself is changing slowly every day. Language learning is a part of everyone's daily life. The only real problem with most quick-fix language learning solutions is that they do not take into account one vital difference between the learning of one's first language and the learning of other languages. And that is, people who speak different languages actually think in very different ways. No wonder students are suspicious of six week courses that promise the earth!

You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen friend Spencer.

You may have certain difficulties writing to me. As you have mentioned you study British English at school, and I speak American English. At our English lessons we learnt a lot, and it is not easy. What do you feel about learning English ? Do you find it to be a difficult language or not? Why ?

Spencer

Write him a letter and answer his 3 questions.

Write 100—120 words. Remember the rules of letter writing.

Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.

Nowadays, the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ no longer awards a place to the person who can speak the most languages. This is likely due to general confusion on the definition of fluency - and how difficult it is to test the claims of polyglots. There are plenty of examples of people through history who have claimed to have held command over a staggering amount of languages. The most impressive living example of a hyperpolyglot is probably Alexander Arguelles, who has studied and to some degree understands around 50 languages. Alexander caught the language bug at university when he began studying German. From then on, he devoted himself to learning as many languages as he could in his lifetime. He notes that the further he goes with his learning, the easier languages come to him. When he first started learning Swedish he was able to hold a complex conversation within three weeks. Yet, he considers this an early stage of learning a language, with much work left to go.

Task 2. You are going to take part in a telephone survey. You have to answer six questions. Give full answers to the questions.

Remember that you have 40 seconds to answer each question.

Task 3. You are going to give a talk about learning foreign languages. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10-12 sentences).

Remember to say:

  1. why many people choose to learn foreign languages;
  2. why learning a foreign language is difficult;
  3. what makes you learn English.

You have to talk continuously.

“Money makes __________________.” I wonder if this famous English expression is very true. If you have money, the world goes __________________ and you are happy. If you don’t have money, the world might not go __________________. They also say that “money is __________________”. I think this is so true. Money makes people kill and steal. Greed means there are things in the world like blackmail, corruption, slave labour __________________ terrible things. Another common saying in English is “money can’t buy happiness”. I’m __________________ this one. I know if I had loads of money I’d be pretty happy. I think if all the world’s money __________________, the world would go round more happily, and there would __________________ happiness.

  3. FROM MINIMUM TO MAXIMUM
  4. THE WAY TO GO
  5. WHEN TO PAY
  6. ECONOMIC RELATIONS
  7. SOME BASIC PRINCIPLES
  8. THE OLDER, THE MORE
  1. Some parents prefer to set chores that need to be done before their child ‘earns’ their pocket money. Again, this is entirely up to you and obviously will partly depend on how old your child is. Rest assured, if your child doesn’t do their chores and pocket money is withheld… well, even the youngest kids will learn from that quick smart!
  2. Of course, some parents may feel it unnecessary to pay their children for chores that should be done anyway. In this case, perhaps you can divide the chores into things that need to be done, such as cleaning their room or helping with the dishes, and extra chores they can earn pocket money from, like helping in the garden.
  3. Another option is to set a minimum amount of pocket money – say, £3 per week – then offer an extra 50 p (or whatever you think is appropriate) for any chores you’d like them to do that week, such as making the bed or tidying up the toys. As they get older and their pocket money increases, these chores should become part of what is expected of them, and you can offer different ‘bonus’ chores. It’s a good way to show not only the rewards that come from hard work, but also how important it is to contribute at home as part of the family. Making your child “earn” their money will also help them to start appreciating its worth.
  4. Once your kids hit secondary school, there’s little doubt the whole pocket money issue will need to be renegotiated. Suddenly, your child is going to find they ‘need’ a lot more things – the latest iPod, new DVDs, and brand name clothing only please! Be sensitive to all of this – remember, it’s not easy being a teenager and there’s a lot of pressure to ‘fit in’ – but don’t just cave in and give them more money when they’ve run out or buy whatever they want. Instead, use this as an opportunity to teach them about the value of things and the importance of saving.
  5. You might like to agree to pay for the necessities while giving pocket money for the fun extras, so decide with your child what you will and won’t pay for. Basic necessities might include: transport to and from school, school uniforms and supplies, clothing for day-to-day wear or a special occasion. Extras could be things like going to the cinema or other trips with friends, fast food and other snacks you’re unwilling to pay for, beauty supplies, and CDs or DVDs. For bigger purchases, perhaps you can agree to pay for half of it while they save for the rest themselves.
  6. Decide also when you will pay pocket money. You could decide to pay your child a lump sum at the start of the month, which has to last them till the next month – this will start teaching them the importance of budgeting and make them think about what they spend their money on, rather than blowing it all in one go.
  7. There are other handy tips for parents to consider. You may teach your kids to shop around – show them that the most affordable clothes can still be stylish, and that there isn’t always much difference (other than price) between these and designer labels. You may be willing to pay for some more expensive items if your teens are happy to choose cheaper options elsewhere. Help your children think for themselves by making them aware of peer pressure and advertising.

How Much Pocket Money Should You Pay?

There is no right or wrong answer to this. How much you are prepared to give depends entirely on what you believe is fair, what you want your child to get out of it, and how much you can afford.

According to Halifax’s 2009 statistics children received an average of £6.24 per week, a slight rise on the 2008 amount of £6.13. Children in London also fared much better than in other areas, with averages above £10, while children in the South West and East Anglia received £4.50 and £4.91 respectively. Research also showed that a child’s age played a big part in how much parents were willing to give, with 8 to 11 year-olds getting an average of £4.80 per week whilst 12 to 15 year-olds received a whopping £7.44.

When it comes to deciding on pocket money for your child, start by considering what you think is appropriate for their age. Using the above figures as a guide, a couple of pounds a week would be quite reasonable if your child is under eight years old.

If you share care of your child, speak with the other parent to come up with a figure you both think is fair – you might choose to each pay half of the amount.

Also, think about what else you give your child. If you are happy to buy the majority of things they want or need, you might not want to give them too much pocket money as well.

It could also be handy to have a chat with other parents, particularly those of your child’s friends, about how much they give their children. But whatever you do, don’t fall into competing with them! Research from Child Trust Fund provider The Children’s Mutual has shown that 16% of parents feel like they are paying too much pocket money, but are pressured into keeping up with what other parents are giving. Only you can know what best suits your child (and your pocket!), so never worry about “keeping up with the Joneses.”

Once you’ve decided an appropriate amount, sit down with your child and discuss it with them. You might like to make an agreement that they will get a ‘pay rise’ each birthday, or ‘bonuses’ for good work at home or school – this will give them something to look forward to, as well as some incentive to behave!

Trading is one of the first ways that people have gotten what they need. For example, in the past, salt was very important to people. They traded salt for shoes, tools, weapons and food. This method of trading is called bartering, but it does not always work well. Over time, people developed a new system. Instead of bartering, they would trade for particular objects. These objects were often rare or beautiful. But sometimes the objects were even common things. These special objects are called proto-money. Proto means “first in time” or “earliest.” So, proto-money is the first, or earliest kind of money. Some cultures used objects such as seeds, pieces of wood, animal skins, cloth, and shells. However, the most popular kind of proto-money was metal. Something very valuable was worth a larger amount and weight of metal. Using metal as money led people to create metal coins.

                                        Secrets of style

  1. When people meet you for the first time, they search for all sorts of clues to make judgements about you, but the most important of these are given by your clothes. So if you want to appear more exciting and to create a good impression, it helps to know a little about the secrets of style. Vicky Freeland looks at some practical style tips that don’t cost the earth.
  2. You may think that changing your image means changing all the clothes you have and spending a great deal on a complete new wardrobe- but the good news is that it doesn’t. There is no need to go out and buy designer clothes. If you want to look your best — all you have to do is to make better use of what you have already had by following some sensible rules. These rules will help you to show your individuality.
  3. Avoid wearing clothes with two different designs- for example, striped trousers and check shirt. Remember too that if you’re wearing jeans and a sweatshirt or jumper, the kind of pattern you choose can affect the way you look. If you’re fairly small, go for a plain top or one with small patterns; on the other hand, if you want to look slimmer, clothes with big designs are more flattering.
  4. Choose clothes in a colour that suits your hair and skin type. As a general rule, people with blonde hair and fair skin look best in pale colours such as light blue, pale green or pink. If you have light brown hair, light eyes and a fair skin, you should choose medium shades such as mid-grey, blue, green or raspberry red. People with dark hair and olive or dark skin can wear the brightest colours such as orange, yellow, turquoise or lime green. Don’t pay much attention to the colours which are in fashion exactly this season.
  5. Accessories such as watches, necklaces and earrings can help to give a finishing touch, but most people make the mistake of wearing their most valuable jewellery rather than choosing something that goes with what they are wearing. Keep it simple and try to select only one or two items at a time. Remember too that silver and gold do not go well together, so if you have a cardigan or jacket with gold buttons, your jewellery should be gold coloured too.
  6. Shoes play a more important part in your image than many people imagine. Even your best clothes can be ruined if your shoes, boots or trainers look shabby, so it’s worth getting a few good pairs and looking after them. Make sure too that they are the same colour as trousers or tights, because a different colour makes your legs look shorter.
  7. So, when you next go to the wardrobe and say ‘What can I wear today?’, spend some time thinking about your choice. The main thing is to keep things as clean and simple as possible- your clothes are there to draw attention to you, not the other way round. Choosing clothes that suite you will make you look your best and enable you to feel more confident and relaxed. But don’t forget to check the weather. You should be warm or cool in your clothes according to the temperature outside.

Fashion Students Spill Their Secrets

Carissa Stastny set foot in Nanette Lepore’s store, she knew she wanted to work for the ultra-feminine designer. Little did the Colorado State University student know, one day she’d hold multiple positions with the brand and she’d even tie the knot in a Nanette Lepore wedding dress. But for Stastny, 28, securing a position at Nanette Lepore was anything but easy.

After studying Design and Merchandising at Colorado State University, Stastny knew that if she wanted to pursue a career in fashion, an internship was a must. “My only internship was with Nanette. She was the only one I applied for,” she confesses. “But I did work for a company, Ollie Sang, in Denver. I worked there while I was waiting to hear from Nanette. It was more volunteering than an internship. They literally worked out of their living room. As someone who had the goal of owning my own company one day, it was cool to see someone doing it.”

Stastny soon heard back from Nanette Lepore, which meant one thing: she’d have to pack up and move from Colorado to the fashion capital of the world, New York City. It was “scary, really scary,” she says, “but there was also a sense of excitement.” From January until May, Stastny lived in the New Yorker hotel (“which was literally across from the design office,” she says) as she cut her teeth as an intern.

As her internship came to an end, Stastny flew back to Colorado for graduation. “I loved the company and the city, so I was sad to leave. About a week after I got home I was eager to come back. I had left my resume and some of my senior portfolio work with Nanette but never heard anything,” she says. Not to be deterred, Stastny reached out to her internship supervisor. “She told me Nanette would need to see a portfolio to get the ball rolling on being hired. So, I put together a portfolio and sent it to New York. I waited and heard nothing.”

Frustrated and eager to get back to New York City, Stastny reached out again to her supervisor. “I called back and she said Nanette didn’t see enough ‘Nanette’ quality in my portfolio and that it didn’t seem strong enough.” Instead of getting discouraged, Stastny got creative. “If at first you don’t succeed, try again!” she says as she reminisces about sending in a second portfolio, “I still heard nothing.”

That’s when Stastny’s out-of-the-box thinking came into play. “About a week later, I sent a floral printed box with a vintage shoe inside. The shoe had a note tied to it that read, ‘Just trying to get my foot in the door.’” But unfortunately, it didn’t warrant the response she had hoped, “Crickets. No response!” Stastny wasn’t ready to give up just yet. She had excelled during her internship and knew that she’d make a great addition to the team. “[A week later] I sent the other shoe in a smiley-face printed box that said, ‘We aren’t a pair without the other.’ So cheese-ball but it worked! Nanette called me and I came in for an interview.” So never give up.

Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.

Many pieces of clothing are invented for a functional purpose before they ever become fashionable, but as they become symbolic of a certain kind of lifestyle, certain items become expressive of meaning. For example, cowboy boots originated as functional footwear for men working in the American West. Cowboys were seen as rugged and individualistic because of the demands of their occupation, and cowboy boots have persisted as a choice fashion item for people wishing to express these values. Even when worn far from ranches or cows, cowboy boots continue to signify values that appeal to people everywhere. Fashion is often fueled by the desire to be different enough to stand out but similar enough to belong to the group that your clothing helps identify.

Task 2. You are going to take part in a telephone survey. You have to answer six questions. Give full answers to the questions.

Remember that you have 40 seconds to answer each question.

Task 3. You are going to give a talk about fashion. You will have to start in 1.0 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10-12 sentences).

Remember to say:

  1. why people pay much attention to fashion,
  2. why some people say that following fashion is not a smart idea,
  3. why you follow/don’t follow fashion.

You have to talk continuously.

GLOBAL WARMING

  1.  For 2,5 million years, the Earth’s climate has varied, moving between extremely cold ice ages and warmer periods. But in the last century, Earth’s temperature has risen unusually fast by nearly one degree Celsius. Scientists believe that human activity is making the temperature go up, a process known as global warming. And many are worried the situation is becoming critical.
  2.  Ever since the Industrial Revolution, factories, power plants, and, more recently, cars have burned fossil fuels such as oil and coal, releasing huge quantities of carbon dioxide and other gases into the atmosphere. These greenhouse gases trap heat near the Earth through a naturally occurring process called the ‘greenhouse effect’.
  3.  The greenhouse effect begins with the sun and energy it sends to the Earth. The Earth and the atmosphere take in some of this energy, while the rest goes back into space. Naturally occurring gases in the atmosphere trap some of this energy and reflect it back, warming the Earth. Scientists now believe that the greenhouse effect is being strengthened by greenhouse gases that are released by human activity.
  4.  Evidence for global warming includes a number of unexpectedly warm years in recent years. Scientists report that 1998 was the warmest year in measured history and 2005 was the second. Studies of ice cores show that greenhouse gases have reached their highest levels in the past 420 000 years. Arctic sea ice is also shrinking. According to NASA studies, the area covered by Arctic sea has decreased by about ten percent in the last 30 years.
  5.  If countries continue to use a lot of fossil fuel resources, the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere will continue to rise. Researchers predict that temperatures will increase by about one to six degrees Celsius by the end of the century. So some climate models say there will be only slight changes. Others predict rises in sea levels that could flood coastal areas. Changing weather patterns could make huge storms like hurricanes more frequent.
  6. Extreme droughts could become more common in warm areas, and some animals, which may not be able to adapt, could face extinction. For example, a polar bear and her cub rest on an iceberg in the Arctic Ocean. If warming continues, the Arctic could lose its permanent ice cap by the end of this century. And it will be impossible for the polar bears to live in such conditions.
  7.  There is still a lot to be learned about global warning. However, many believe that governments and corporations can help to reduce the impact of global warming by cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Consumers can also help by saving energy around the house, for example, by using light bulbs that require less energy and driving fewer miles each week. These simple changes may help to keep the Earth cooler in the future.

The giant panda

The giant panda also known as panda bear or simply panda, is a bear native to south central China. It is easily recognized by the large, distinctive black patches around its eyes, over the ears, and across its round body. The name "giant panda" is sometimes used to distinguish it from the unrelated red panda. Though it belongs to the carnivore, the giant panda's diet is over 99 % bamboo. Giant pandas in the wild will occasionally eat other grasses, wild tubers, or even meat in the form of birds, rodents or carrion. In captivity, they may receive honey, eggs, fish, yams, shrub leaves, oranges, or bananas along with specially prepared food. Pandas eat any of 25 bamboo species in the wild, such as Fargesia dracocephala and Fargesia rufa. Only a few bamboo species are widespread at the high environment pandas now inhabit. Bamboo leaves contain the highest protein levels; stems have less.

The giant panda lives in a few mountain ranges in central China, mainly in Sichuan province, but also in neighboring provinces, namely Shaanxi and Gansu. As a result of farming, deforestation, and other development, the giant panda has been driven out of the lowland areas where it once lived.

The giant panda is one of the endangered species. A 2007 report shows 239 pandas living in captivity inside China and another 27 outside the country. As of December 2014, 49 giant pandas live in captivity outside China, living in 18 zoos in 13 different countries. Wild population estimates vary; one estimate shows that there are about 1,590 individuals living in the wild, while a 2006 study estimated that this figure could be as high as 2,000 to 3,000. Some reports also show that the number of giant pandas in the wild is on the rise. While the dragon has often served as China's national emblem, internationally the giant panda appears at least as commonly. As such, it is becoming widely used within China in international contexts, for example as one of the five mascots of the Beijing Olympics. The giant panda is a terrestrial animal and primarily spends its life roaming and feeding in the bamboo forests of the Qinling Mountains and in the hilly Sichuan Province. Giant pandas are generally solitary, and each adult has a defined territory, and a female is not tolerant of other females in her range. Pandas communicate through vocalization and scent marking such as clawing trees. They are able to climb and take shelter in hollow trees or rocks, but do not establish permanent dens. For this reason, pandas do not hibernate, which is similar to other subtropical mammals, and will instead move to elevations with warmer temperatures. Pandas rely primarily on spatial memory rather than visual memory. Pandas have been kept in zoos as early as there was the Western Han Dynasty in China, where the writer Sima Xiangru noted that the panda was the most treasured animal in the emperor's garden of exotic animals in the capital Chang'an. Not until the 1950s were pandas again recorded to have been exhibited in China's zoos. Chi Chi panda at the London Zoo became very popular. This influenced the World Wildlife Fund to use a panda as its symbol. A 2006 New York Times article outlined the economics of keeping pandas, which costs five times more than that of the next most expensive animal, an elephant. American zoos generally pay the Chinese government $1 million a year in fees, as part of a typical ten-year contract. The last contract, with the Memphis Zoo in Memphis, Tennessee, ended in 2013.

How Electronic Communications are Changing our Lives

Millions of people already have experience with electronic communications. Every time they make an airline reservation or use an automatic teller machine or have their credit card checked, they are participating in an electronic communication session. It is not only possible for us to communicate immediately with people and places via computer using electronic mail (e-mail), it can also be inexpensive and simple to do. E-mail is only one of many “tools” that are appearing along the “electronic superhighway”. This highway is now the quickest way to get to the people we want to “talk to” and the information we want to find. In short, while e-mail is the simplest and most immediate function of the Internet for many people, there are many other fascinating aspects of electronic communication.

The industrial age has developed into information age, in which the means to access, manipulate, and use information have become crucial (решающий, ключевой) to our lives and success as citizens of the global village. The electronic superhighway provides a free entree to libraries, research institutions, databases, art galleries and countless other sources of data. But for those of us who are interested in intercultural communication, the best part about it all is that Cyberspace is a universal community, with instant access not just to information everywhere, but also to friends old and new around the globe.

  1.  Booking an air ticket online ______.
  1.  is impossible for millions of people
  2.  can be done without a credit card

  2.  The latest fashion
  3.  A mobile for grandma
  4.  Phone addiction
  5.  A strange competition
  6. A law against mobiles
  7.  Back to real life communication

  1.  Young people often worry about the style and functions of mobile phones. However, today companies present more models for people who are over 50 or 60 years old. They need a mobile phone with large buttons, so that they can dial numbers without glasses. The menu is also simple. It really doesn’t matter if the phone has a camera or the Internet. For them, less is more.
  2.  Today, when friends meet in a cafe, they put their mobile phones in the middle of the table. They aren’t allowed to touch them at all. If someone does it and answers the phone, he has to pay for everybody. Sounds fun, right? The idea is to make people concentrate on a real conversation with each other instead of using their mobiles all the time.
  3.  Visitors of theatres and cinemas often complain that mobile phones ring during performances. The city government of New York passed a new act. It is now forbidden to use mobile phones in places, like theaters, libraries, museums, galleries, and cinemas. Those who don’t switch off their mobiles will have to pay $50.
  4.  With mobile phones we can contact anyone, anywhere, any time. Scientists say that some people are so used to mobiles that they can’t go to the kitchen without them. They are in panic if they leave them at home or lose. It has become a habit to have a mobile everywhere. People depend on mobile phones so much that doctors have started worrying. They say it may be a thing similar to drugs.
  5.  Throwing mobile phones is an international sport that started in Finland in 2000. Traditionally participants throw mobile phones over their shoulders. The person, who throws farthest, wins. There’s also freestyle throwing. In this contest sportsmen should throw a mobile in a beautiful and creative way.
  6.  In 2010, a young girl from China made a song using only her mobile phone. She wrote it without any guitars, pianos, drums. She used different functions of her mobile. It took her several days to record the song. Later she made a video of it and put the video on the Internet, where over a million people watched it. She sent the song to the Apple company and suggested using it in their advertisements.

G.           Today’s mobile phones can already send emails, surf the Internet, and keep you in touch with friends. Tomorrow’s phones are like helpful secretaries. In a few years you’ll see that they know your habits and can advise you what to cook for dinner. They will remind you where to go and what present to buy.

A Gadget That Has Ganged Our Lives

No consumer product in history has caught on as quickly as the mobile phone, global sales of which have risen from six million in 1991 to more than 800 million a year now.

The arrival of the mobile phone has transformed our lifestyles so much that men now spend more time on the phone than women, according to the results of our special opinion poll.

Mobile phones are no longer just the domain of the teenager and, in fact, just as many 60- and 70-somethings now own a mobile phone as the 15 to 20 age group (slightly below 70%). Even among the over 80s more than 40% now have a mobile.

The survey found that men with mobile phones (82% of all men) spend more than an hour a day making calls on an average weekday. The average man spends sixty-six minutes on mobile.

But the poll reveals that, while men are using their phones a lot more, women are actually spending less time on the phone. Slightly fewer women (79%) have a mobile phone, and the survey shows that the average amount of time they spend on the phone on a weekday has gone down from sixty-three minutes before they got a mobile to fifty-five minutes now. The explanation might lie in the fact that men love to play with techno toys while women may be more conscious of the bills they are running up.

Innovation in mobile phones has been happening so fast that it's difficult for consumers to change their behaviour. Phones are constantly swallowing up other products like cameras, calculators, clocks, radios, and digital music players. There are twenty different products that previously might have been bought separately that can now be part of a mobile phone. Mobiles have changed the way people talk to one another, they have generated a new type of language, they have saved lives and become style icons.

Obviously, the rich have been buying phones faster than the poor. But this happens with every innovation. Mobile phone take- up among the poor has actually been far quicker than it was in the case of previous products, such as colour television, computers and Internet access. Indeed, as mobile phones continue to become cheaper and more powerful, they might prove to be more successful in bridging the gap between the rich and the poor than expensive computers.

There are obviously drawbacks to mobiles as well: mobile users are two and a half times more likely to develop cancer in areas of the brain adjacent to their phone ear, although researchers are unable to prove whether this has anything to do with the phone. Mobile thefts now account for a third of all street robberies in London, and don't forget about all the accidents waiting to happen as people drive with a mobile in one hand. But, overall, mobile phones have proved to be a big benefit for people.

УСТНАЯ ЧАСТЬ.

TASK 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.

Mobile phones have become very popular and texting is taking the lead. In many situations sending text messages called SMS via the telephone is more preferable than emailing somebody. Unlike emails, SMS texts are delivered alerting the telephone owner to the arrival of a new message. Not many of us check their email on a regular basis while SMS texts have a sense of urgency and we must answer them at once. Besides, texting is used for personal contacts while emails are often the channel of business communication. A great advantage of SMS texts is that they can be sent from any location thanks to the mobile device in your pocket. You do not have to sit in front of a computer or carry a heavy laptop with you.

TASK 2. You are going to take part in a telephone survey. You have to answer six questions. Give full answers to the questions.

Remember that you have 40 seconds to answer each question.

TASK 3. You are going to give a talk about your mobile phone. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes.

Remember to say:

  1.  how you got your mobile phone
  2.  what you find to be very useful in your mobile phone
  3.  what you like and don’t like about your mobile phone

You have to talk continuously.

Interviewing Pilotto

Pilotto and his design partner Christopher De Vos have their own studio, with scrupulously ordered mood boards of digital computer-aided designs, and wide, high tables with samples spread across them.

It’s a far away from the Vyner Street cupboard room where I met them five years ago, when they represented a young label singled out by Time Out as one to watch for spring/summer 2007. Back then, half-Austrian, half-Italian Pilotto and half-Belgian, half-Peruvian De Vos had just secured a first buyer for their exquisitely printed collection – Seven, an adventurous boutique in New York. Now, the brand has more than 30 buyers including Liberty, Harvey Nichols and Colette in Paris, and counts Samantha Cameron and Michelle Obama as fans.

How have you made the transition from the tiny label of five years ago to the global brand you’re managing today?

Peter Pilotto: ‘A lot of that is thanks to the Centre for Fashion Enterprise which supports and incubates young fashion businesses. It gave us security – two years not to worry about rent. It gave us a studio, the use of the sewing machines and facilities. And, very importantly, it also gave us a lot of advice about accounting. As a young designer, you don’t consider the fact that if you sell a lot in a season, that can be the riskiest moment. It can mess you up in January when you have to pay your manufacturers but you haven’t delivered to clients yet. It can all be over if you don’t manage the moment right – that’s what the CFE is there for. Young designers just think: Great, I sold a lot. And not: ‘I’m going to have to pay people a lot of money before anyone pays me.’

You’ve always shown in London. Do you feel under pressure to go to Paris and get access to a different kind of buyer and exposure?

CDV: ‘No. Not any more. We get the buyers here. I think the buyers go to every fashion week and make up their minds while they travel. Then they like to make their orders in Paris at the end of it. Even the London stores do that.

PP: ‘We are happy in London – the support has been amazing. That’s why London Fashion Week is so incredible – because all these young designers are able to show and start a business, which would be almost impossible in Paris financially. Here, because of the CFE it’s easy. We’ve been through a struggle, but still, we’re managing.’

Do you feel like there’s a kind of uprising in British fashion at the moment?

Both: ‘Totally!’

CDV: ‘I think it’s exciting that people are now staying in London, and keeping it strong. People seem to be coming back. Also, it’s London Fashion Week, but a lot of us are from everywhere.’

Yes, I was going to ask about that. How did a label with a Belgian, Italian, Peruvian and Austrian background come to be seen as British?

PP: ‘Because we’re here – we’re a London-based label. We started it here right after I graduated.’

CDV: ‘We also manufacture a lot in London. Yes, it’s expensive; the things we make here are the expensive, technical pieces. We used to manufacture everything here but now for some of the separates we’re more careful of the cost.’

Shopping has a far greater impact on the environment than may be immediately apparent. After food, clothing purchases alone have the second highest environmental impact of all our consumption activities. The amount of water used in the production and transport of clothes bought by an average household each year is 150,000 litres. Even products you might think are environmentally neutral, like your favourite band’s latest CD, will often require significant resources to produce. Consider the energy and embodied water used in the creation of the disc, its booklet and packaging, how the CD was transported to the shop and how you travelled to buy it. A substantial amount of household energy consumption and greenhouse pollution can be attributed to white goods (fridges, freezers, washing machines, televisions and clothes dryers). Look for, and only purchase items that are water and energy efficient.

Task 2. You are going to take part in a telephone survey. You have to answer six questions. Give full answers to the questions.

Remember that you have 40 seconds to answer each question.

Task 3. You are going to give a talk about shopping. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10-12 sentences).

Remember to say:

-why shopping is a popular pastime today;

-how shopping affects people, animals and the environment;

-why you like/don’t like shopping.

  1. My five elements to enjoy and value in life are love, food, fashion, entertainment and travel. But one element that includes the others is travel. With the mention of travel, my eyes glisten and heart begins to pound. My favourite saying goes: ‘A hopeful heart and an open mind are the best travelling companions’. During my trips I do my best to follow it. Travelling for me is experiencing and learning.
  2.  You can’t get lost in an unknown place with Travelling Companion Panorama Camera. It is an optimal tourist technology. This cutting- edge concept is a device that combines the capabilities of several different gadgets and aids that out-of-towners often find useful. You can hold this device in one or both hands and have a clear display in front your eyes. It can help you to map your routs, to discover places of interest and to record your trip.
  3. Those who love to travel, take every opportunity to ride on anything but enjoy the ways and the items at every stop. The most pleasurable feeling for them is when they have someone with whom they can share their happiness, with whom they can talk and relax. Nobody wants to be alone in the world and while enjoying something which one is very fond of like “travelling”, one feels the need of the right kind of companionship.
  4. As John left the wood, a voice called after him, “Hallo, comrade, where are you travelling?” “Into the wide world,” he replied; “I am going into the wide world also,” replied the stranger; “shall we keep each other company?” “With all my heart,” he said, and so they went on together. Soon they began to like each other very much, for they were both good; but John found out that his fellow traveller was much cleverer than himself. He had travelled all over the world, and could describe almost everything.
  5.  We have a list of people willing to use vacation time from their job to accompany you on vacation. While none of our clients may need a doctor or a nurse to get around, all of our travellers enjoy the comfortable feeling of travelling with a companion who has professional education and experience. You can talk directly with each companion about your needs while travelling. An experienced travel companion can solve most problems in advance and handle other challenges as they arise.
  6.  Like all little girls, I had an obsession with Barbie dolls. Once I was presented with a doll named Samantha, who had a bright red velvet dress and matching bow in her brown hair. She came with a little travel coat which, in the words of my mom, made her the perfect travel companion. The doll was fantastically lovely and cute and I couldn’t part with it. Even growing older while travelling it was always in my baggage waiting for my company.
  7. A Travelling Companion is “a person or persons with whom you have coordinated travel arrangements, who shares the same accommodations as you and intends to travel with you during the trip”. These are people you are not related to — those people are usually family members. Usually “Travelling Companion” means up to six persons whose names appear with yours on the same trip arrangement and who, during the trip, will accompany you.

Challenges of Travelling the World

The way people travel the world has become more complex. There are many rules and regulations to remember. Even the smallest thing can set the travel plans into a stressful situation. Travellers should take into consideration the numerous challenges that they might come across during their trip. Especially, if they aim to travel solo. The idea of travelling around the World is incredible, but without serious planning for the trip the travellers could find themselves in a difficult situation thousands of miles from home.

There are a number of things to consider. The number one difficulty to world travel for the majority of people is the language barrier. Hundreds of different languages and dialects are spoken all over the world. If you are lucky you might speak two or three languages, but during your world travels it is likely that you will encounter languages that you do not speak. Having a plan to cope with this difficulty will be necessary. A conversion dictionary for the language in question might be useful.

Another problem that world travellers have to deal with is currency. Every country you go to will most likely require the traveller to convert their currency. Several European countries have adapted to using a common currency called the Euro which helps to make travel in between these countries much easier now but for Sweden, Denmark, the UK and some others.

Every country has laws that dictate what requirements a tourist must meet in order to enter into the country. Some countries may only require a traveller to have a valid passport. Russians, for example, can travel to such countries where English is spoken as the Maldives, the Bahamas, the Seychelles, Grenada, Dominica, Israel and some others. Other countries, for example, the UK, Canada, Australia, the USA, Malta and others require a tourist visa for travellers. Research the requirements for each country you are planning to visit. Remember to update your passport and any other documentation needed. It is a good idea to take photocopies of your passport and other important documents to take with you. If you lose the originals, you can go to the nearest embassy to get a new one.

Pack for your trip at least a couple of days in advance. Even before you pack, you should create a list of items you want to bring with you. When you pack, have that list with you. It will make the packing faster and easier. It is also useful to take only necessary things and fewer bags along with you. Folding your clothes with a more efficient technique can help you.

Knowing the laws of each country that you will visit during your trip can prove to be extremely difficult. A great source of information that connects to the most relevant things a tourist should know about each country is a world travel guide either online or offline. This type of guide will let you know which side of the road you need to drive on and things of that nature. A downloaded guide works offline without an internet connection. Keeping it with you during the course of your travels may prove to be an invaluable help. You only have to pick a country or major city to download its guide. You can also use Facebook and VK if you want to know about the world’s most exciting places and cultures, read the insider’s guides and features, full of ideas, local tips and travel experiences.

During your travels it is important to pay attention to what you eat. Staying healthy while you are travelling abroad is vitally important. Before you leave for your trip call your health insurance company and see what type of coverage your plan provides for travel abroad.

I think that travelling round the world is a part of education. It is more realistic and practical than solving calculus problems. Travelling is certainly a beautiful hobby. It teaches you many things about living your life wisely. You meet different people. You learn lessons.

Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.

In the past wealthy people travelled to distant parts of the world to see great buildings, works of art, learn new languages, experience new cultures, and taste different cuisines. During the Roman Republic, spas and coastal resorts were popular among the rich. Modern tourism can be traced to what was known as the Grand Tour, which was a traditional trip around Europe, (especially Germany and Italy), undertaken by mainly upper-class. Mass tourism developed with improvements in technology, which allowed the transport of large numbers of people in a short period of time to places of leisure interest, so that greater numbers of people could begin to enjoy the benefits of leisure time. Nowadays tourists have a wide range of budgets and tastes, and a wide variety of resorts and hotels have developed to cater for them. For example, some people prefer simple beach vacations, while others want more specialised holidays and quieter resorts.

  2. HAVE A GOOD REST
  3. TRAIN FRIENDSHIP
  4. FAST AND PLEASANT
  5. TICKETS
  6. PLEASURABLE DIFFERENCES
  7. FOOD
  8. TAKING TEA
  1. Train travel between cities is definitely one of the best experiences you can have while visiting Russia. I don’t mean that the accommodations are the most comfortable, or the trains are fast and efficient, but using ground transportation to cover the vast distances between cities makes obvious the reality of being somewhere so different from home. Romantic and un-Western, train travel will give you glimpses of rural countryside as you sip tea made from the so called samovar. The rhythm from the tracks is comforting as you play cards with your traveling companions or read a book. Train travel is great because you are deep in Russian culture without having to extend any extra effort.
  2. As in every case, make sure you have your passport, money, and tickets with you before boarding the train. There is a lot of checking and re-checking to make sure your identification matches your tickets before getting on the train. Put your tickets somewhere you can reach them easily after you board – do not misplace them; someone will come around to check your tickets once again to make sure you are a paying passenger and in the correct seat and car.
  3. There is a conductor lady on any train. This is who you will go to if you have questions or problems. She is who you address when you need to get sheets for your bunk and who you will pay when you rent them. She will probably be stern and business-like. She is not a flight-attendant; she is someone who does what she has to do and will otherwise leave you alone. That is, unless you break the rules – and then she will be the first to scold you for your mistake!
  4. The Russians are very hospitable. During long train trips, there is a tradition to bring snacks for yourself and to share. Fruit, crackers, tea, juices, as well as bread and cheese are easy to transport and good for sharing. Any food left by the train staff on the table in the compartments is there to tempt you – it works like a hotel mini bar, so you pay higher prices for whatever you buy on a train.
  5. There is usually a water heater in each car that will provide hot water for drinks, tea and soups. Having tea with snacks on trains is a long-standing Russian tradition. Be careful, though – the water in the heater is really hot. If you aren’t used to the movement of the train it is easy to slosh hot water everywhere and burn yourself. You may ask the conductor to make tea for you into your car or have one in the restaurant car.
  6. It’s true that one of the greatest things about travelling through Eastern Europe is the opportunities to make new friends. You can get to know quite a bit about someone on a 14-hour train ride from St. Petersburg to Moscow. It’s quite possible that you’ll find yourself in the middle of a card game or laughing at some Russian jokes. The regular native travelers are very friendly and they might be simply interested in where you come from and where you are going. You will be asked a lot of questions, personal also, but you are free to make any stories, everyone will make you think they do believe you.
  7. Overall, you should find the train experience fun, interesting and relaxing. Use the time to catch up on your personal travel journal or to reflect upon the people you have encountered and the things you have seen. You will be well-rested and ready to resume your adventures once you reach the next city.

Russian Churches

For most of its history, Russian architecture has been predominantly religious. Churches were for centuries the only buildings to be constructed of stone, and today they are almost the only buildings that remain from its ancient past.

The basic elements of Russian church design appeared fairly early, around the eleventh century. The plan is generally that of a Greek cross (all four arms are equal), and the walls are high and relatively free of openings. Sharply-sloped roofs and a multitude of domes cover the structure. The characteristic onion dome first appeared in Novgorod on the Cathedral of Sancta Sophia, in the eleventh century. On the interior, the primary feature is the iconostasis, an altar screen on which the church icons are mounted in a hierarchical fashion.

The centers of medieval church architecture followed the shifting dominance of old Russian cities – from Kiev to Novgorod and Pskov, and, since the end of the 15th century, Moscow. With the establishment of a unified Russian state under Ivan III, foreign architecture began to appear in Russia. The first instance of such foreign work is Moscow great Assumption Cathedral, completed in 1479 by the Bolognese architect Aritotle Fioravanti. The cathedral is actually a remarkable synthesis of traditional Russian architectural styles, though its classical proportions mark it as a work of the Italian Renaissance.

The Russian tradition experienced a brief period of renewed influence under Ivan the Terrible, under whose reign the legendary Cathedral of St. Basil’s was built. In general, however, the Tsars began to align themselves increasingly with European architectural styles. The great example of this shift was Peter the Great, who designed St. Petersburg in accordance with prevailing European design. His successors continued the pattern, hiring the Italian architect Rastrelli to produce the Rococo Winter Palace and Smolny Cathedral. Under Catherine the Great, the Rococo was set aside for neoclassicism, completing St. Petersburg’s topography in a European style.

During the nineteenth century a fresh interest in traditional Russian forms arose. Like the associated movement in the visual arts, this revival of older styles participated in the creation of an avant-garde movement in the early twentieth century. For a brief period following the 1917 Revolution, the avant-garde Constructivist movement gained sufficient influence to design major buildings. Lenin’s Mausoleum, designed in 1924 by Alexey Shchusev, is the most notable of the few remaining Constructivist buildings. By the late 1920s, the avant-garde found itself repudiated by Stalin’s increasingly conservative state. Moving away from modernism, Stalinist-era architecture is best exemplified by the seven nearly indistinguishable "wedding-cake" skyscrapers that dominate the city’s skyline.

In more recent years, the dissolution of the Soviet state and a renewed interest in traditional Russian culture have produced a new appreciation of more modest folk architecture. The few remaining examples of traditional wooden architecture, such as those on display in the outdoor architectural museum in Kostroma, are now among Russia’s most treasured architectural monuments.

Types of Media

The term ‘news media’ refers to the groups that communicate information and news to people. There are three main types of news media: print media, broadcast media, and the Internet. Print Media. The oldest media forms are newspapers, magazines, journals, and other printed materials. Although print media are less popular today than they used to be 10 - 20 years ago, many people still read a newspaper every day or a newsmagazine on a regular basis. The influence of print media is therefore significant. Regular readers of print media are usually more politically active. Many news reports on television, for example, are merely follow-up stories about news that first appeared in newspapers.

Broadcast Media (радио- и телевещание). Broadcast media are news reports broadcast via radio and television. Television news is hugely important in most countries because more people get their news from television broadcasts than from any other source.

Before the invention of television in the 1950s, most people relied on the radio for their news. Many people still listen to radio news every day, especially during morning and evening commutes (ездить на работу и с работы) in big cities. Local news stations have a particularly large audience because they can report on local weather, traffic, and events.

The Internet. The Internet is slowly transforming the news media because more and more people are relying on online sources of news instead of traditional print and broadcast media. People surf the sites of more traditional media, but also turn to unique online news sources such as weblogs. Websites can provide text, audio, and video information.

  1. Apple should be a lot more worried about its latest bug than it appears to be. Scheduling the Do Not Disturb function in iOS has been broken since New Year’s Day and as with any error from Apple, it’s got plenty of press. The bug, caused by the way the underlying operating system handles the change in year, will fix itself by January 7 but the inconvenience is a sign post to something bigger. This isn’t the first time iOS has suffered from date-related bugs. In November 2010, iOS 4 got confused by the switch to Daylight-saving time, left alarms unadjusted and caused users to oversleep. Then in January 2011, iOS 5 suffered from a bug where non-repeating alarms set before the New Year failed to ring. Apple’s response then was the same as to the Do Not Disturb issue now – wait and it will fix itself. When something goes wrong with an Apple product, the company’s tone is often one of weary surprise that anyone is bothered, as if faults are just features you haven’t noticed before.
  2. Many people have felt the awful sensation of something they thought was private on a social networking site going public. Facebook’s privacy settings are pretty secret, and frequently shift without notice. When you try to set things below the absolute maximum, it becomes difficult to work what is or isn’t private. Can friends see it? Can friends of friends see it? What I may have wanted to share as a 19-year-old student I may not want to have seen as a 24-year-old user. Without extreme, painstaking attention, it’s very hard for long term users to clean their old potentially embarrassing posts; indeed, the recent flap about private messages being shown online publicly was all traceable to old but very private posts that older users couldn’t believe they had shared openly five or six years ago.
  3. The Government’s attempts to computerise the chaotic Job Centre system have taken a turn today, with the announcement that in future it will use online cookies to follow job seekers around the Internet, and make sure they are actually looking for jobs. The Job Centres will know how many searches you’ve done on the government jobs website, and if you’ve turned down any good opportunities. You can turn off the cookies, but that takes away low-skilled jobs, making it even harder for people to get out of being unemployed.
  4. Vodafone subscribers were unable to send and receive emails or access the web on Friday morning following a technical fault. The outage lasted for part of the morning with Vodafone customers taking to Twitter to complain about the problem. A BlackBerry spokesman said that the problem was with Vodafone. “All BlackBerry services are operating normally but we are aware that a wider Vodafone service issue is impacting some of our BlackBerry customers in Europe, Middle East and Africa. We are supporting Vodafone’s efforts to resolve the issue as soon as possible.” Vodafone said the outage was caused by a router error and that services were being restored.
  5. Apple could launch a cheaper version of the iPhone later this year, according to reports. A cheaper iPhone has been rumoured for years but, according to reports, Apple could launch the device later this year. The cheaper handset could be similar to the current model but with a cheaper, less expensive body, the Wall Street Journal reports. Apple is considering an iPhone with a polycarbonate plastic case, which would be cheaper to make than the glass iPhone 4 and 4S or the aluminium iPhone 5. The paper says Apple might still decide not to launch the device but that a cheaper iPhone is needed to help the company compete with cheap smartphones running Google’s Android operating system.
  6. The world’s biggest technology companies come to Las Vegas every year hoping the products they launch will become international hits. The Japanese giants that used to dominate the industry are now rarely jackpot winners at the international Consumer Electronics Show. In an industry increasingly dominated by Google, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft – Sony, Sharp and Panasonic have all unveiled more misses than hits. As a consequence they are between them battling losses that will top £12bn this financial year alone. Sony hopes that its waterproof, and class-leading, mobile phone will help it turn the corner. Sharp, if it survives its admitted “material doubt” that it can service its debts, thinks big TV screens are the way forward.
  7. In the land of the coffee maker, the pod is the king. Led by Nespresso and George Clooney, millions of pounds is being spent on machines that meld the convenience of quality coffee in pods with our unending love of coffee. Yet Starbucks, the chain that support that fascination, has not had a machine of its own. Until now. The Verismo 580 is a £149 machine, putting it squarely in the mid-range. Cheaper models are available, but the build quality needed to maintain the required pressure for decent coffee means this is the sort of price where good quality becomes an expectation. Indeed, with some of the excellent Nespresso machines from companies such as Magimix available for less, the Verismo ought to be fantastic. Sadly, it’s not. On the plus side, it heats up water in just 15 seconds, and is quickly ready to use.

Stop talking rubbish about 3D printing

Pick up any technology magazine, and you’ll find sentimental articles about how the world is going to be completely transformed by 3D printing – everyone from Wired to the Economist has speculated on changes to society that 3D printing will bring. The ability to turn objects into data – to copy physical things – has led many people to predict an attack of 3D piracy. It has been written a lot about the criminal possibilities connected with the machines. Yesterday, the founder of Makerbot came out to say his product will “fuel the next industrial revolution”.

Having talked to a bunch of manufacturing engineers, I’m not so sure. All the enthusiasm for the “revolution” seems to come from journalist observers of the 3D printing scene, the companies offering the “revolutionary technology”, and a handful of Lefty academics thrilled by the idea of abolishing property. People actually involved in manufacturing are not so sure that it’s magic. Let’s take a British example.

There was a huge internet furore a few months back when Games Workshop, a British toy soldier manufacturer, felt it had been the world’s first victim of digital piracy, and issued a takedown notice on a 3D printing pattern for a vehicle similar to one from its Warhammer 40,000 game. A huge wave of copying, a minefield of intellectual property issues, was predicted.

In actual fact, very little of that has happened.

Patterns for model soldiers exist on file-sharing sites like the Pirate Bay. However, the economics just don’t support pirating on that scale. Unlike, say, pirating music, where the act of listening is free, printing out models costs money. A box of model soldiers goes for about £20 online, about £25 in the shops – but the plastic to print them out at home currently costs around £35, and the most common printer – the Makerbot – costs about £2,000. So an epidemic of piracy seems unlikely. Printing is also a fairly exacting process – it takes time, effort, and often you get a pile of goo at the bottom of your machine rather than the thing you wanted. Widespread physical copying won’t happen, in the same way that photocopiers didn’t lead to an epidemic of photocopying books.

The technology just isn’t there yet – even successful prints create models that look like they’ve been left on a radiator for a few hours. And if it’s not good enough for model soldiers, it’s certainly not good enough for things with complex moving parts. One engineer told me: “You have to appreciate how expensive and how specialised most factory tooling is. You can run a 3D Printer for six months and never make the same item twice.”

He thought it would be 10 to 15 years before printers able to create factory-quality products would appear, and those ones able to do in metal would probably never make it into the home. He did, however, confidently predict being able to print out parts for his BMW on the factory level ones in a few years’ time, but pointed out that those machines weren’t going to drop below a million pounds a piece any time soon, and that even if they did, the materials to make the parts at the right tolerance for a car were incredibly expensive to buy.

None of the current methods of home 3D printing – the thermal fusing of plastic filaments, using UV light to cut polymer resin, depositing glue to bind resin powder, cutting and laminating paper, or even using a laser beam to fuse metal particles – are even close to reaching the standards a machine would require. It’s all very well to upload weapon parts to the internet, but without the means to do metal you’ve printed yourself a cool accessory for your Halloween gangster costume – and if you’re stupid enough to press the trigger, it’s more likely to take your arm off than actually fire a bullet.

It strikes me that 3D printing is the microwave of manufacturing. If you look back at newspapers from the 1970s, people predicted that microwaves would be the only device in a kitchen, and that every dish would be microwaved. That never came to pass. Like microwaves, 3D printing will be important, but this isn’t the industrial revolution that techno-libertarians would have you believe.

You have 30 minutes to do this task.

You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen friend Frank.

... Yesterday we were having a test and my teacher saw me using my mobile. I would like to find some information on the Internet. Of course, she sent me out and called my parents. Now it’s forbidden to use my new smart phone and my father gave the old one and lean only call and send messages. Is it allowed to use phone at your school? Do you use it during lessons? And what is the reaction of your teachers?..

There is no one not to have watched at least a single episode from the Star Track series and the various, but fictional gadgets used by the actors amazed everyone. Fortunately, what was at this time unimaginable, nowadays is very present; obvious there are still some items that aren’t used in practice but it won’t take a long time until these will became usual. Once with the release of the multitude of smartphones and tablets, the gadget market simply exploded and people are still very interested in it. Some specialists say that the auto industry is suffering because people prefer to buy a new gadget instead of saving money for a car. Anyway, we all are grateful to gadget inventors and we are expecting new and newer gadgets to make the life more commode and pleasant. The entire process of creating a new gadget is difficult and tons of resources are invested in it.

Task 2. You are going to take part in a telephone survey. You have to answer six questions. Give full answers to the questions.

Remember that you have 40 seconds to answer each question.

Task 3. You are going to give a talk about modern technologies. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10-12 sentences).

Remember to say:

  1. what modern technologies make life more convenient;
  2. what negative effects modern technologies have;
  3. what your most important gadgets are, and why.

You have to talk continuously.

  1. It’s never too late                          5.        A lifetime of learning
  2. The first big step                          6.        Independence and responsibility
  3. Making the right choices                7.        Learning rather than playing
  4. Teaching the teacher                 8.        The highest level of education
  1. Education is a process which can occupy us for most of        our lives. It teaches us what we need to know, and prepares us for a life beyond the classroom. It continues as we get older after we leave tin classroom, and it never really stops. We learn not only facts and information, but also the necessary skills to become a useful member of society.
  2.  Children usually begin their education with ‘pre-school’ classes at the age of 3 or 4. This might seem too young for some children to be away from their parents, but separation has to happen at some роint.  School is the main environment where a child must learn to act as an individual, and the break has to be made sooner or later.
  3.  Junior school is where a child encounters formal education for the first time, and the teacher will actually teach rather than control the kids’ playing. This first major change in the nature of education is the basis of learning to gain knowledge - learning how to learn - as the child realises school is аbout much more than simply fun and games.
  4.  High school, for teenagers, is where it gets serious. So many changes, so many important things to take into account - exams, friends, appearance - so many choices! What’s worse, failure can have extremely serious effects on a student’s future. Students who don’t get down to some serious study and pass their exams will probably not like the consequences.
  5.  At university, things change again. A student often leaves home for the first time to go to university and suddenly, there are problems - like cooking your own food - that have to be solved. The student is on their own, and has to deal with it. They have earned their freedom, but now they have to live up to the challenge.
  6.  And after university, what then? Some people continue their studies to earn a Masters degree or even a Doctorate, but this level of education is extremely difficult and only a few people have the necessary skills. Many post-graduate students become academics, and their lives follow a familiar student-teacher path.
  7.  Even if someone feels they didn’t achieve all they could have done in their school life, we must remember that age is no barrier to learning. Many people nowadays return to education in their later years to complete their studies, or gain further professional qualifications, or merely to learn something new. Mature students bring something new to the classroom, as well as their ‘wise old heads’.

  1.  Absolute honesty                  5.        Another application
  2.  The cost of education        6.        Optional teaching
  3.  Just choosing                  7.        Needed move
  4.  Informal teaching                  8.        Uncertain parents
  1.  At the beginning of your last year at school you receive an application form. On this form you choose up to five universities that you would like to go to. The form is sent to those universities with information from your school about you and your academic results. If the universities are interested in your application, they will ask you to attend an interview and will offer you a place. Any offer, however, is only conditional at this stage.
  2.  A-level examinations are the exams taken at the end of your time at school. So, when a university makes an offer, it will tell you the minimum grades that you must get on your а-level exam. If you don’t get those grades, then you will not be accepted and you will have to apply again to another university.
  3.  Like all British universities, Oxford is a state university not a private one. Students are selected on the basis of their results in the national examination or the special Oxford entrance examination. There are many applicants and nobody can get a place by paying. Successful candidates are admitted to a special college of the university: that will be their home for the next three years and for a longer period if they would like to go on studying for a postgraduate degree.
  4. An undergraduate will spend an hour a week with his or her ‘tutor’; perhaps in the company of one other student. Each of them will have written an essay for the tutor, which serves as the basis for discussion, arguments, the exposition of ideas and academic methods. At the end of the hour the students go away with a new essay and a list of books that might be helpful in preparing for the essay.
  5.  Lectures and seminars are other kinds of teaching; popular lecturers can attract audience from several faculties, while others may find themselves speaking to two or three loyal students or maybe to no-one at all. In practice, most students at Oxford are enthusiastic about academic life and many of them work for days on each essay, sometimes sitting up through the night with a wet towel round their heads.
  6.  Most 18 and 19 year-olds in Britain are rather independent people, and when the time comes to pick a college, choose one as far away from home as possible. So, many students in northern and Scottish universities come from England and vice versa. It’s very unusual for students to live at home. Although parents may be a little sad to see this happen, they usually have to approve of this step and see it as a necessary part of becoming an adult.
  7. Students all over the world have to work for their education. A college education in the USA is expensive. The costs are so high that most families begin to save for their children’s education when their children are the babies. Even so, many young people cannot afford to pay the expenses of full-time college work. They do not have enough money to pay for school costs. Tuition for attending the university, books for classes, and dormitory costs are high. There are other expenses such as chemistry and biology laboratories fees and special student activity fees.

  6.  PARENTS’ PARTICIPATION IN THE CHILD’S LIFE

Education Otherwise

  1.  Though education is compulsory in the UK for children between the ages of five and sixteen, school is not. Many families prefer to educate their children otherwise than at school, and it is their right under UK law to do so. Home educating families do not have to follow the National Curriculum and there is no single ’right’ way to educate a child at home.
  2.  Education Otherwise (EO) was formed by a small group of parents in 1977 and has evolved into a large self-help organisation which offers support and information to its members. They take their name from the Education Act, which states that parents are responsible for their children’s education, “either by regular attendance at school or otherwise”.
  3.  Some families make a carefully considered decision to home educate long before their child reaches “school age.” There may be philosophical, religious or various other reasons for their choice, and ultimately they feel that in some way they can offer a more suitable education for their children at home. It is also a natural choice for parents who have enjoyed participating in their child’s early learning and see no reason to give up this responsibility when the child reaches the age of five.

D.  Other parents send their child into the school system, but later find that school does not work for their child. School does not suit everyone. Sometimes children may find it hard to fit in; some children have special needs; some children face bullying and may become very anxious and distressed. Children may find that school does not suit their particular way of learning, so parents who become unhappy with the education which is provided in schools may also decide to home educate.

 E. EO has an extensive network of members that includes those families, groups and individuals who are practising home education as an alternative to school, those who are considering the possibility of home education. This work has been carried out by a nation-wide team of dedicated, experienced members who volunteer their services free to support other members and promote home education. Membership of Education Otherwise gives one the opportunity to meet other home- educating members, as well as offering a range of information and ideas.

In most countries, there are bad schools where pupils don’t do sufficiently well in national tests. It’s important to try to improve standards in bad schools. But in some cases, schools are so bad that they have to close down.

It is very difficult to transform a bad school into a good one. But with the right approach, it is sometimes possible. But what is the right approach? To find out, let’s look at some examples.

The Bishop Challoner Secondary School was once one of the worst schools in England. The school is in a poor part of East London. It is a very big school with 350 members of staff and 1700 pupils. A lot of the pupils originally come from countries where people don’t speak English. There are 73 different mother tongue languages spoken in the school. Also, 27 % of the children have mental or physical problems. The boys’ section of the school was so bad that it had to close. Catherine Myers became head teacher at the school in 1992. She had the job of trying to improve the school and raise standards. Some teachers were not very good. They needed extra training. They had to learn basic teaching skills. Some of these bad teachers were able to improve, but others had to leave.

Fortunately, Catherine had a budget of several million pounds to spend on improvements. She believed that it was important for the school to be an attractive place for the children. She wanted the school to be very different from the ugly blocks of flats where most pupils lived. She visited good schools in different countries. She learned how they had become successful. She found that after-school clubs were important for the children. The clubs helped the children be positive about school. The children were able to learn a lot of new things too. The school now has 44 after-school clubs.

Bad schools often have a problem with discipline. Normally, when there is a serious discipline problem pupils are suspended from school. At the Costessey Secondary School in Norwich, this method wasn’t very successful. Often, the parents of the suspended child telephoned the school with an excuse. The child returned to the classroom as before. But head teacher Rachel de Souza decided to change the system. First of all, she talked with the children and together they made some school rules. If some pupils don’t respect the rules, they may have to leave their class and attend lessons in a special unit. They enter and leave school at different times and have no contact with the other pupils. When these children have learned to respect the rules, they can return to their normal classes. The message is clear: school is important and no one should miss it.

Certain basic conditions seem necessary to improve a bad school. The school should be an attractive place where pupils feel comfortable. The pupils should be able to do after-school activities. Parents should take an interest in their children’s education. And teachers should be positive and well-trained. These basic conditions give pupils at the school a better chance to do well in education and in life.

One of the oldest schools in the world is a school in China. It was organized in the year 143 BC and it was the first Chinese public school. Soon after that the building of the school was destroyed in a fire but the school was rebuilt a couple of years later. This was not the end for the tests of life for this school. The school was destroyed by wars many times and only ruins remained but each time it was rebuilt again and again. It survived hurricanes and earthquakes, blizzards and storms. In the twentieth century it was called a model for secondary schools nationwide. For many Chinese students it is a great honour to study at that school. Would you like to study in such a school?

UK schools are allowed to discipline pupils who behave badly in various ways. Pupils are usually punished for playing truant, smoking, swearing, hitting, running, stealing, not doing homework, bullying, cheating in exams and wearing unsuitable clothes for school. UK schools often use such ways of punishment as exclusion, suspension, detention and lines. A pupil can be excluded from the school and cannot come back. When a pupil is suspended they cannot enter the building or attend lessons until the school has a meeting about their case. Detention means a pupil is asked to stay at school at the end of the school day. The pupil must work for 30 minutes or an hour more before they are allowed to leave the school. Sometimes during detention a pupil has to write a sentence many times on a sheet of paper. Many schools in the UK now give parents a home/school contract explaining the school discipline and rules.
