Not so much a luxury, more a way of life

A year after having my baby, I steel needed to lose weight, but I felt awkward about going to a gym. I thought that if I booked one or two appointment with a personal trainer, I’d learn what to do and then I could continue on my own. However, I became addicted. I found that it was so much better having someone to encourage me. I’ve been seeing my trainer twice a week for three years now. We tend to work out at the gym because it has childcare, but sometimes we go for a run in the park. Even though, I do worry about the cost from time to time, she’s worth every penny because I work out more effectively now. I also feel motivated to work harder because of the expense!

When I was younger I felt I ought to do all the cleaning, shopping and ironing myself, but now I don’t. I have a pressured but well-paid job, so I can pay someone else to do these chores so that I am free to do the things I enjoy, like cooking. I have a cleaner who comes three mornings a week and she does the ironing. Coming home to an immaculate kitchen is wonderful, better than any facial or massage treatment, and well worth the money. Recently, I decided to cut out my weekly supermarket visit too, and now have organic food delivered instead. I use local shops for other groceries, so I never have to go to the supermarket at all now. Although I like shopping for clothes, having my house cleaned is more important to me. If I had to cut back, cleaning would be the last thing to go.

Having a personal shopper takes the hard work out of clothes shopping. I need lots of smart outfits for work as I’m involved in selling, but I don’t have the time to wander round the shops looking for them, so I go to a personal shopper at a big London department store. She knows my tastes exactly. All I have to do is ring her to tell her what I want, then arrange a convenient time to go along to the store, to try on the clothes she has selected for me. If I'm really busy, she’ll even send me things to try on at the office! I rely on her totally. She keeps a record of what I buy each time so I don’t end up with things that don’t match. It’s a free service, and I actually spend less on clothes than I used to , because she steers me in the right direction and stops me becoming a fashion victim.

A while ago, I started having facials because I was getting more wrinkles, and my face was very dry. At first, I treated myself to a six-week course, but now I go once a week after a session at the gym. The whole process lasts about an hour and really helps me to unwind. I regard it as a worthwhile investment. I didn’t look after my skin when I was younger, but now I have to do things properly. I’ve picked up some good habits and tips from the beauty consultant, but I could never do the facials myself. I’d far rather spend money on a facial than having a cleaning lady. As well as improving my appearance, facials have given me greater self-esteem.

While the children were small, there was just about enough time to keep on top of all the washing and ironing. Now, with three teenagers and a company to run, I’ve come to realise that it’s impossible to do everything. I also feel that I deserve better than piles of dirty washing after my working day. It’s a wonderfully efficient service; they, pick up two mornings a week before I leave for work, and deliver everything back, laundered and ironed to perfection, within 24 hours. Of course, it’s quite an outlay each week, but I have no problem with that at all. Keeping the family presentable is more important.

A Strange Encounter
