Jane Austen Lived 16.12.1775 – 18.07.1817, an English novelist. Born at Steventon near Basingstoke, the seventh child in the eight-child family. Jane Austen was primarily educated at home by her father and elder brothers and through her own reading. Not married.

Слайд 3

Historical era The nineteenth century saw a great surge of events in history and politics. Historical era which Austen lived in is an interesting one. Her novels are fascinated with the odd and peculiar interactions between people of different social levels – a relatively new development in England at the time.

SENSE AND SENSIBILITY The story centers on the sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood. They are forced to leave their home, and along with their mother and younger sister, they move, in reduced circumstances, to the west of England. ( because John (the son of first marriage) inherited from his father (3 daughters and John) , who died)

Слайд 6

SENSE AND SENSIBILITY Elinor is the "sense" and Marianne is the "sensibility" of the story. They consider "good“ marriage means support for the future. As their plans for marriage are interrupted by various troubles and misunderstandings, Jane Austen explores the customs of her society and the role of marriage during the early nineteenth century.

Слайд 7

ELINOR DASHWOOD - is the eldest daughter at the age of 19. She forms “Sense” in the title of Austen’s novel. She’s reserved, a little closed and not often shows her feelings. She thinks deeply about everything and always gives advice to her mother Mrs. Dashwood. She is polite to everybody.

Слайд 8

MARIANNE DASHWOOD - is the second daughter of Mrs. Dashwood. Unlike her sister Elinor, Marianne is very emotional , ardent, believes in real love and waits for it. She’s open, and she’s not afraid of showing her feelings from inside. Marianne frankly expresses her dislike.

Слайд 9

EDWARD FERRARS - is the brother of Fanny Dashwood. He isn’t handsome, but he’s a very clever and pleasant person. He falls in love with Elinor. That’s why, Mrs. Dashwood planned to marry Elinor to him, but Marianne doesn’t approve this idea, because she thinks he is so serious and boring. Anyway at the end, he marries to Elinor and becomes a priest.

Слайд 10

COLONEL BRANDON - is a close friend of Sir John Middleton. He seems to be a happy, friendly man. He isn’t handsome, either, but he is a gentleman. He has sympathy to Marianne.

Слайд 11

JOHN WILLOUGHBY - is the relative of Sir John, who has nice house in Combe Magna in Somerset. He’s very handsome, poetry-loving , musical and supposedly rich. He likes dancing and riding a horse. He has artistic and cultural sensibilities.

Слайд 12

CONCLUSION In the end, everything works out – Elinor gets the man she loves. Finally, Marianne finds her own happiness, too – she learns to love Colonel Brandon back, and the pairs are married. After all the drama, both Elinor and Marianne end up with their happy endings .

I liked this story of Jane Austen. All of her characters in this book are different. Some are serious, some are emotional, some are full of love, but others – a little selfish and extraordinary. I would advise this book to teenagers and adults

Слайд 15

1 . propriety – правильность (правила приличия) 2. ardent –пылкий (characterized by intense emotion) To her it was but the natural consequence of a strong affection in a young and ardent mind. 3. minutia – мелочи ( a small or minor detail) "Upon my word, I am not acquainted with the minutiae of her principles. I only know that I never yet heard her admit any instance of a second attachment's being pardonable." 4. imprudence - неосмотрительность a lack of caution in practical affairs

Слайд 16

5. raillery - насмешка ( легкое поддразнивание) earnest and conscientious activity intended to do something Willoughby opened the piano-forte, and asked Marianne to sit down to it; and thus amidst the various endeavours of different people to quit the topic, it fell to the ground. 6. lamentation – плач ( a cry of sorrow and grief)

Слайд 17

7. attainable – достижимый capable of being accomplished I consider it as the only form of building in which happiness is attainable , and were I rich enough, I would instantly pull Combe down, and build it up again in the exact plan of this cottage." 8. affliction - бедствие a state of great suffering and distress due to adversity They were no sooner in the passage than Marianne came hastily out of the parlour apparently in violent affliction

Слайд 18

9. affectation -притворство ( a deliberate pretense or exaggerated display) Willoughby's behaviour in taking leave of them, his embarrassment, and affectation of cheerfulness, and, above all, his unwillingness to accept her mother's invitation, a backwardness so unlike a lover--so unlike himself, greatly disturbed her. 10. avowal - признание In such a case, a plain and open avowal of his difficulties would have been more to his honour, I think, as well as more consistent with his general character; 11. sensibility – чувствит-ть

Слайд 19

12. effusion – выражение эмоций 13. to extort -вымогать 14. maxim – сентенция (важная цитата) 15. fastidious - привередливый 16. hackneyed – часто повторяющийся 17. conspicuous - бросающийся в глаза 18. self-mortification - самоунижение 19. abstruse - глубокомыссленный difficult to understand But I had no inclination for the law, even in this less abstruse study of it, which my family approved. 20. despond – терять надежду
