(Учащиеся получают небольшие тексты и карточки-схемы для монологического высказывания)

  • Now we are going to read the texts about the most popular holidays in Britain. Before that, you must split into 3 groups. Begin, please.

St. Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the UK on February 14th. It is a celebration of love between husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends and sometimes just friends together!

Many people send and receive cards from their loved ones. Postcards are usually signed like this: "with love from?" A loving heart will tell you who the card is from. Traditionally, flowers (especially red roses) and chocolates are favorite gifts.

Bonfire Night

On the 5 of November, people remember the plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament by celebrating ‘Bonfire Night’. All over Britain there are firework displays and bonfires with models of Guy Fawkes, which are burned on the fire.

Traditional Bonfire Night food is hot baked potatoes. They are cooked on the bonfire and filled with butter and cheese.

New Year’s Day

New Year’s Eve celebrations start in the evening on 31 December in the UK. Some young people go to parties and others stay at home with their family. This evening people wish a “Happy New Year”.

After the celebrations, it’s traditional to make plans for the new year on 1 January. These plans are called ‘New Year’s resolutions’ and the idea is to make some positive changes in your life.

Christmas

The most popular holiday in Britain is Christmas. It’s a time for eating great food, giving and receiving presents, and - most importantly - spending time with your family. Some weeks before it, people send greeting cards to the friends.

You can buy Christmas cards or you can make them. People buy a Christmas tree and decorate it with toys, balls. At night Father Christmas comes. He has got a big bag of presents for children.

Pancake day

Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is a special day celebrated in many countries around the world. It is celebrated in English-speaking countries like the UK, Ireland, Australia and Canada Pancake Day is always on a Tuesday in February or March.

Another tradition on Pancake Day in the UK is pancake racing. People run in a race with a pancake in a pan. As they run, they have to toss the pancake (throw the pancake in the air and catch it in the pan) several times.

Easter

Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. it is an event which really signals the start of springtime. Nowadays, Easter has become rather commercialised.

The most iconic Easter product in the UK is considered to be the Cadbury's Creme Egg. As Christmas has Father Christmas, so Easter has the Easter Bunny: young children believe that their eggs are delivered by this character. Happy Easter everyone!
