Task 3

Give a 2-minute talk about the urban and rural lifestyles. Remember to say:

  • what advantages and disadvantages of living in the city are
  • what benefits and drawbacks of living in the countryside are
  • if you are a country/city mouse, why

I’d like to tell you about the urban and rural lifestyles.

The urban life style has a lot of advantages. In cities people work a lot and the rate of unemployment is low. There is convenient public transport in every city. In big cities you can find a tube. There are a lot of shops, theatres and cinemas for people. Everything is close at hand. The schools are huge, for example, there are 1500 students in one school. The facilities are great; you can study in computer rooms or swim in the swimming pools in city schools. However, there are a lot of disadvantages. In the streets traffic is heavy and you can hear it at night, there is constant noise and pollution. Streets are often crowded. People need a lot of money as the cost of living is very high. You are tired because of the hustle and bustle every day.

The rural lifestyle has both benefits and drawbacks. On the one hand, in the countryside you enjoy the high quality lifestyle. You can breathe fresh air, see beautiful landscapes and live in peace and quiet. Local people are very helpful and friendly. On the other hand, people get up very early to milk cows in the barns and feed chickens in the farm yards. Animals are lovely, but the smell is awful. Students have to go miles to school, so they sometimes drive to school or use a school bus that leaves at 7 a.m. A school can be very small without modern facilities. The level of unemployment is high. In addition, people can feel isolated, especially in autumn and winter.

As for me, I’m a city mouse. I’ve been living in the city for 13 years. I enjoy the hustle and bustle of my big city. I go shopping every day. I can’t stand feeling isolated and the lack of facilities. I study in a big school with a lot of modern equipment.

In conclusion, I should say the urban and rural lifestyles have advantages and disadvantages. Every person should choose the way of living he or she prefers and change this lifestyle for better.

You are going to give a talk about safety rules. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes.

Remember to say:

  • what problems the burglars cause
  • what can be done to protect our homes from burglars
  • what you do to protect yourself and your home

If you live in a big city, you should know safety rules and protect yourself and your home from burglars.

There are burglars in every place and they cause serious problems. There’s a lot of crime in cities these days. Firstly, they steal things from people’s houses. Secondly, if a burglar breaks in, he takes valuables. If you put up a fight, a criminal can kill you.

A lot of things can be done to protect our homes from burglars. You should always look through the peephole before answering. Take a mobile phone to bed and keep it switched on. Check a stranger’s ID. If you are not sure, don’t let the person in. Don’t leave your keys next to the doors or windows. Fit an alarm system and make sure it works properly. Install dusk-to-dawn outside lights at least 2.5 metres high in the garden.

As for me, I follow safety rules and do important things to protect myself and my home. I’m very careful with my keys: I don’t lose them or leave anywhere. Moreover, I always tell my parents about strangers who have come. Finally, my parents want to install an alarm system. (I live in the house and we installed dusk-to-dawn outside lights high in the garden.)

In conclusion, every person living in a big city should follow the safety rules. Better safe than sorry.

Task 3

You are going to give a talk about your favourite book character. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes.

Remember to speak about:

  • the name and the author of the book he/she is from
  • character features
  • why the book is so special

I’d like to tell you about my favourite book character, Tom Sawyer, the main character of the book ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’.

This masterpiece of American children’s literature was written by Mark Twain and published in 1876. Tom is an ordinary young boy growing up along the Mississippi River in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain lived as a boy. In the novel Tom Sawyer has several adventures, often with his friend, Huck Finn. The book starts with Tom's whitewashing of a fence. He accompanies Huckleberry  to the graveyard at night, where they witness Injun Joe, murdering Dr. Robinson. At the end of the book Tom takes Huck to the cave and they find the box of Injun Joe’s gold.

Mark Twain portrays childhood during the mid-19th century in an affectionate but realistic way. Tom's character is full of wild ideas that sometimes get them into trouble. Tom is presented as a mischievous child who steals jam from his Aunt Polly's kitchen, gets into fights with neighborhood boys, and tricks other children into doing his chores. At the same time, he is kind, brave and ready to give his life for the friends.

Originally a commercial failure, the book 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’, ended up being the bestselling of any of Twain's works during his lifetime. The novel has elements of humour, satire and social criticism. These features made Mark Twain one of the most important authors of American literature. Mark Twain describes some autobiographical events in the book. The novel is set around Twain's actual boyhood home of Hannibal, near St. Louis, and many of the places in it are real.

In conclusion, I should say Mark Twain himself called this novel his "hymn to boyhood."

Remember to say:

  • where he/she was born
  • what he/she did before writing
  • what famous characters he/she wrote about

I’d like to tell you about my favourite writer Agatha Christie, who was the ‘Queen of Crime’. Excitement, adventure and mystery all make up the world of her detective stories.

She was born into a wealthy upper-middle-class family in TorquayDevon in 1890. She was the youngest of three children. Christie described her childhood as "very happy". She was surrounded by a series of strong and independent women from an early age. Christie was a voracious (ненасытный) reader from an early age. She spent much of her childhood apart from other children, although she devoted much time to her pets, whom she adored.

Christie wrote her first short story, The House of Beauty while recovering in bed from an   illness.  Before marrying and starting a family in London, she had served in a Devon hospital during the First World War. Christie settled into married life, giving birth to her only child, Rosalind in 1919. On 3 December 1926, her husband Archie asked Agatha for a divorce. That same evening, around 9:45 pm, Christie disappeared from her home. On 15 December 1926 Christie was found.

Text p.16.

In conclusion, I should say Agatha Cristie’s words: ‘One of the luckiest things that can happen to you in life is, I think, to have a happy childhood’. She was so great because she had a happy childhood.

You are going to give a talk about dynamic teens. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes.

Remember to speak about:

  • name of a person, country he/she is from
  • what he/she does
  • what his/her character qualities are
  • why you find this person interesting

Some teenagers spend their whole lives playing computer games, surfing the net or just complaining that they are bored. While others get out there and do things. One of such dynamic teens is Akiane Kramarik.

She was born on July 9th, 1994 in Mt. Morris, Illinois, USA. Her mother was a pedagogue, lecturer, counsellor and writer. Her father was a hospital dietary director, chef and cooking instructor. The third of five children, Akiane regards her four brothers as her best friends. At six she began experimenting with color pastels, and at seven with acrylic paints. At eight she completed her first five-foot long oil paintings mastering realism and holding her first solo art exhibits. At ten her first book “Akiane: her life, her art, her poetry” was published, and her unique story rapidly circled the whole world.

She was considered as the youngest binary prodigy in both realistic art and poetry in the recorded history. The works Akiane created at the age of eight reached and exceeded the maturity level of a seasoned artist. No other known child art prodigy has ever created at the level of such sophistication as Akiane.  Akiane was inducted into  the Kids Hall Of Fame, and World Council for Gifted and Talented Children. Akiane’s first original painting was sold for $10,000 USD when she was only eight.

She is truly imaginative, artistic and creative. The most important, Akiane is generous. She contributed to over two hundred charitable international foundations and fundraisers. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised through auctions and art exhibits, or donated to needy people throughout the globe.

I find this person so unusual because Akiane is so gifted. She paints on canvas, linen, tile and wood. She refers large dimensions. She lived in three continents and considers Australia, United States and Lithuania as her home. She communicates in five languages: Lithuanian, English, Russian, American Sign Language, and Japanese. She enjoys yoga, walking, bike riding on the beach, running, playing basketball & tennis.

In conclusion I should say I agree with Akiane Kramarik’s words “Receive life like a gift and release it like a present.”

You are going to give a talk about online and in-class learning. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes.

 Remember to speak about:

1.        what online and in-class learning mean

2.        what benefits and drawbacks of online and in-class learning are

3.        what way of learning you prefer and why

These days online courses/training have become extremely popular, as more and more schools and institutes are offering courses online.

The best thing about online learning is that individuals can take a course from the comfort of their home. In online classes, the learner is not directly interacting with the faculty. In case of having any questions, they may find it difficult to ask their online instructor. Traditional classes are more suitable for young children and teenagers. Regular classes help them interact with other students, be better disciplined, follow a regular schedule.

Despite technological advances, traditional education is still likely the better option for those who prefer on face-to-face communication. Seeing and interacting with your teachers on a regular basis can be motivating and easier.

As for me, I prefer in-class learning for several reasons.

Firstly, a classroom environment offers students the opportunity to have face-to-face interactions with their peers and teachers. Secondly, students may have a deeper understanding of the materials. Finally, teachers give immediate help and support with correcting mistakes.

1. How can we learn with the help of modern technology?

2.        What is online learning?

On-line or e-learning is learning conducted via electronic media, typically on the Internet.

3.        What are the advantages of online learning?

You are going to give a talk about types of media. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes.

Remember to say:

•        what types of media you know

•        what each type of media provide us with

•        what type of media you consider the most reliable and why

Means of communication are the necessary part of present life. We should know about the importance of these communication devices.

We can start our talk about media by describing different kinds of media that children are using today. Modern media comes in many different formats, including print media (books, magazines, newspapers), television, movies, video games, music, cell phones, various kinds of software, and the Internet. Each type of media involves both content, and also a device or object through which that content is delivered.

The term 'print media' is used to describe the traditional or "old-fashioned" print-based media that today's parents grew up with, including newspapers, magazines, books, and comics or graphic novels. 'Print media' provides us with local/national/international news, horoscopes, interviews, weather reports, interesting articles, TV guide, cartoon strips, advertisements, celebrity gossip and fashion and beauty advice.

Television has been entertaining people for decades. Today, there are literally hundreds of general and specialty channels to choose from and thousands upon thousands of programs. Viewers may download episodes from the Internet and watch them on their computers. Viewers with certain cell phones may even watch programs through their cell phones. TV provides us with local/national/international news, horoscopes, interviews, weather reports, TV guide, advertisements, celebrity gossip, fashion and beauty advice, documentaries and numerous shows.

The radio plays an essential role in communication today by remaining available when other communication mediums, such as television and Internet, can’t be used because of weather. Radio provides us with local/national/international news, interviews, weather reports, advertisements, celebrity gossip.

The most popular means of communication is the Internet. Its history began in the United States in 1969. It has already conquered our ordinary life. Everybody knows that the Internet is a global computer network, which embraces hundreds of millions of users all over the world. It provides us with everything.
I consider the Internet the most reliable type of media because  it presents the reader with a variety of news sources. In addition, it leaves the user with enough information that can enable him to make judgments for himself. You can always check if the information is true in one click of the mouse.

In conclusion I’d like to say Peter Drucker’s quotation: “The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn't said”.

  1. What types of media do you know?

  1. What does print media provide us with?

  1. What does TV provide us with?

You are going to give a talk about favourite teenage magazines. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes.

Remember to say:

  • what the titles of the magazines are and what you can see on the covers
  • what their regular features are
  • why teens like them

You have to talk continuously.

I’d like to tell you about Russian teens’ favourite magazines.

A magazine is type of thin book with large pages and a paper cover that contains articles and photographs and is published every week or month. Almost all my classmates read magazines.

As for boys, their favourite magazines are about nature, for example: “The World around Us”, technology, for example: “Radio”, sport, for example: “Football. Hockey”, and computer games, for example “Igromania”. On the covers of boys’ favourite magazines different bright pictures can be seen. “The world around Us” shows different ancient buildings. “Radio” depicts a self-constructed gadget. “Football. Hockey” usually publishes photos of football and hockey stars on the cover. ““Igromania” can demonstrate famous game characters and scenes. As for girls, their favourite magazines are about fashion, for example: “ELLE GIRL”, cosmetics, for example: “Faberlic”, sewing and knitting, for example: “Model Maker-Designer”. On their covers there are celebrities, models in beautiful outfits, sets of fashionable cosmetics.

The regular features of magazines are closely connected with the content. In “The world around Us” you will find “Nature wonders”, “Forest Animals”, “The World of  Fashion”, “Make a model”. In “Radio” the regular features are: “Elimination of radio interference”, “Creating or modifying a device”, “What details the device consists of”, “News”, “Historical information”. “Football. Hockey” has got “Latest sports news”, “The best football  and hockey players of the world”, “Match schedule” , “ Match score” and “Interviews with players”. The regular features of “Igromania” are “In developing”, “Review”, “Verdict”, “Game of the month” and “Special materials”. In “Faberlic” girl readers enjoy “Novelties of decorative cosmetics”, “Collection of clothes by famous stylist Alexander Rogov”, “Welcome fragrances”, “Bright images of female beauty”. In “Model Maker-Designer” teens can see “Public Design Bureau”, “House of Masters Club”, “On Earth, in the Sky and the Sea”, “Pages of History”, “Maritime Collection”, “In the world“

Teens like their favourite magazines and spend a lot of time reading them because this type of media has a longer shelf life. You can read and reread them once again. Magazines look glamorous because of good quality paper, colours, fonts, sizes, inserts, photos. Some magazines have additional CDs with them. Some provide small toys, models, samples. Fashion magazines can attach a sample paper with its smell.

In conclusion, I should say Margaret Fuller’s quotation “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.”

  1. What are the names of teenage magazines?

  1. What is your favourite teenage magazine?

  1. What is it about?

  1. What can you see on its cover?

You are going to give a talk about virtual pets. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes.

Remember to say:

  • what virtual pets are like
  • why people want to have virtual pets
  • what kind of a pet you would like to have – a virtual or a real one

A digital pet (also known as a virtual pet or artificial pet) is a type of artificial human companion. They are usually kept for companionship or enjoyment.

People buy these pets because they can’t have real ones. Cyberpet and Tamagotchi were some of the first popular digital pets. Imagine, you are thinking about a pet but you do not want the mess or the daily care. Perhaps, a robotic dog produced by Sony is a solution for you. A robot dog of course can also be used for fun or as toys. A new robot dog is called Aibo. Aibo is black and white.

After more than 10 years Sony has decided to give a new life to this iconic robot dog. Aibo can be ordered since September 2018 for about $2900.

The aim is that the robot dog can form an emotional bond with members of the family and offer them love, affection and pleasure. Robot Husky Puppy, for example, is a new model within the popular Life Animals. These new friends are soft and huggable, with animated expressions and sounds, and touch-triggered responses. There's a lot of research out there about positive emotional impacts of owning virtual pets. If a person is allergic to fur or lives alone and can’t take care of a real dog, the computerized pet is the perfect solution.

As for me personally, I prefer a real pet for several reasons. Firstly, live pets have a lot of advantages. The most important thing is they can show you their affection to the owners. Moreover, they can protect you. However, real pets have serious disadvantages. You have to clean after them. Dogs always bark when they are hungry. Some rare breeds of dogs are extremely expensive to keep. Though virtual pets don’t need a vet or shed hair, they are not living creatures.

In conclusion, I should say, if you want a friend in a big city, you should get a dog. As the humorist Josh Billings said “A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.”

  1. What virtual pets do you know?

  1. What are their benefits?

  1. What are their drawbacks?

  1. Are they good for kids?

  1. Are they expensive?

There is a broad range of camps available across the world. That means there's a camp or program to suit every interest, strength and need and make the right choice for a child. There are different types of camps: Traditional, Boy and Girl Scout, Underprivileged, Day Summer, Not for Profit , Special Needs, Specialist, Faith Based. Sports camps provide a fun physical challenge for children, away from   video games, the Internet and television. Arts camps give a child the freedom to discover and develop their creative passions. Educational camps come in many different forms, e.g. tech camps.

You are going to give a talk about your favourite film. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes.

Remember to say:

  • what the name and the type of the film is
  • who it is directed by and who stars in it
  • what the film is about
  • why you like the film

I’m going to tell you about one of the best films in the history of cinematography.
Forrest Gump is a 1994 American comedy-drama film based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Winston Groom. "Forrest Gump" is one of the best movies of all time, guaranteed. I really just love this movie and it has such a special place in my heart.
It was directed by Robert Zemeckis. The film stars Tom HanksRobin WrightGary SiniseMykelti Williamson, and Sally Field. The performances are just so unforgettable and never get out of your head.  The lines are so memorable, touching, and sometimes hilarious. Everybody knows:  ‘My mama says that stupid is as stupid does.’

The story depicts several decades in the life of Forrest Gump (Hanks), a slow-witted but kind-hearted man from Alabama who witnesses and, unwittingly, influences several defining historical events in the 20th century in the United States. Forrest meets many celebrities from his life that just happened to be there: Elvis Presley, President Kennedy, President Johnson, President Nixon, and John Lennon. Forrest meets some interesting people along the way: Bubba his Vietnam war friend, Luteniet /lefˈten.ənt/ Dan and Jenny whom he loves.

This movie is incredible and should be seen by everyone. "Forrest Gump" is a remarkable movie and inspires everyone. It's not just about someone stupid who happens to be in great places and historic events just because of being in the right place at the right time. This story is beautiful and will inspire everyone to go the distance and see the world like Forrest did and will never give up on their dreams.

In conclusion I’d like to suggest you seeing the world through the eyes of Forrest Gump.
