Also there is one more popular spring festival in Russia “Maslenitsa “.It is the week before Lent. Russian people say goodbye to winter and welcome spring. It is a time of singing, dancing and fun. All people eat pancakes and drink hot tea. Teenagers play in the snow, go for sleigh rides, go sledging and have snowball fights. Usually people make a straw doll of Lady Maslenitsa who is dressed in special clothes. On Sunday evening they burn Lady Maslenitsa on a big bonfire. It takes place in late February or early March.

Maslenitsa! This is the funniest and brightest celebration in Russia. It is celebrated in all parts of our country. On this holiday people say “Good bye” to winter.  Usually we celebrate Maslenitsa in March. The symbol of Maslenitsa or the Pancake Day is round blini or pancakes with traditional fillings (начинки) – chicken, caviar (икра), jam, mushrooms (грибы). People usually have fun on this holiday. They sing songs and dance. Children play snowballs or sledge (кататься на санках). People visit their friends and relatives. All streets are decorated with colourful ribbons (ленты). In the evening people burn (сжигать) a straw doll  symbolizing winter. Also they watch firework displays. I think this festival is a very special time because no country in the world does celebrate something like this (потому что ни одна страна в мире не празднует что-то подобное).

The 8th of March! On the 8th of March people in Russia celebrate International Women’s Day. It is a day of our mothers, sisters, grandmothers and all women in our country. Many people send their mothers, sisters and daughters a card or a gift. Men give flowers and presents to all women. We always celebrate the 8th of March in our family. Our tradition for this holiday is that all the housework is done by men. My mother, my sister and I are not allowed to help in any way. My father and my little brother get up early and cook celebration meals, clean the house and make tea for us. Then we sit down at the table to have a big breakfast. After that it’s time for giving presents. We go to give presents to our grandmother in the afternoon.
