Thank you for asking me to come and visit you and your family next month. It is a great idea!

I am really interested in visiting new places. I like museums and old churches very much. I also like visiting art galleries – there are so many fascinating things to see there. I know there is one in your town. Can we visit it? You say that there isn’t a sports centre in your town but is there a swimming pool? I enjoy swimming a lot and I love diving. Is there also a place to eat fish and chips? Fish and chips shops are great!

        The only problem is that I don’t know what to take with me: warm shoes, a jumper and boots? What’s the weather like in your area? In my town it rains a lot and that’s why I always carry on an umbrella with me. And what about other things? For example, a camera?

A computer game: The Lost Statue

In this game you are in a small country called Neverland. It is a deserted place. The weather there is terrible. It rains a lot and there are strong winds. The only people there are two young brothers. They live alone in their small house on the beach. In the game, you are one of the boys – Josh and Frank. Josh loves the beach very much and he is good at windsurfing. Frank is interested in doing quizzes and playing guessing games.

One day, they meet a strange man. He collects old things. He needs to find a small statue from the Stone Age and he asks the boys for help.

You decide to help the man. First, you talk to the man and learn about the lost statue. Then, with your brother, organize a trip around Neverland to look for it. The yeti

In 1832, an explorer traveled to the Himalayas.

The people there told him stories about a strange animal called a yeti. It lived in the snow, they said. It was very tall – much bigger than a man. The explorer didn’t believe the stories. “These people have probably seen a big monkey,” he thought.

But the stories about the yeti continued. A lot of the explorers went to the Himalayas: They wanted to find the yeti. Some of the climbers told stories about a strange animal in the snow, but nobody came back with evidence.

In 1925, a photographer named Tombazi saw a yeti when he was climbing. It was about 300 meters away from him. He was with some other people, and they saw the yeti, too. Tombazi tried to take a picture, but the yeti disappeared. Tombazi went to look at the snow and he found footprints. They were enormous!

The best clue about a yeti comes from China. There were stories about yetis from China, too. A scientist called Gene Poirier traveled to farms in China and collected pieces of hair. When people examined the hair it did not come from any normal animal. Maybe it’s the first real evidence of the yeti!

Dear Sir,

Last Tuesday evening I went with two friends to your restaurant for my 15th birthday. I’d booked the table for eight o’clock and we arrived about ten minutes late, but that was not a problem. The waiter, who was very polite, showed us to our table and we studied the menu. I ordered a fish pie and my friends ordered some salads. However, after about fifteen minutes, the waiter informed us that there was no more fish pie. He apologized and suggested ordering something else. I looked at the menu again and decided to have the same as my friends – a salad.

When the food came, it was very good. After we’d finished, we decided to order some desserts. The waiter said that, unfortunately, it was too late. There wasn’t enough time for us to order desserts.      The Maltese Islands are a group of little islands in the Mediterranean Sea. The population of Malta is about 400,000 people. In spite of being so small in size, Malta is quite a famous place and lots of tourists visit it every year.

     Tourists in Malta have many kinds of entertainment to choose from. Clear and warm water is full of marine life and attracts divers and people who enjoy swimming and sailing. could join them. As most participants could not afford to buy a musical instrument of their own, well–to–do villagers helped to pay for the instruments on the condition that the musicians would perform at their village feasts. Today, according to the latest survey by the statistics office, the total number of bandsmen/women is over 4000. Many well–known musicians started their career in a local band club and performed at their village feasts.

1. I'm a 24-year-old business student from Malaysia and I've been going to English classes at night school for the past 5 years. Up to now I've thought that I'm a good student. Last month I went to Britain. Nobody could understand me and I couldn't understand them. What went wrong? My English teacher is very good and I always get the highest mark for my grammar test.

2. I'm writing to ask your opinion on my problem. My English teacher never corrects my mistakes when I'm speaking. Isn't that her job? How am I going to learn to speak better? Also she's always telling me that I should forget all the rules of grammar that I learnt when I was younger.

3. I am looking after two small English children. I love my job but the way that English people speak is a little surprising. For example, I often hear them say things like 'more friendlier', and I thought it should be 'more friendly'. Many of them say 'we was' instead of 'we were'. Can you explain this? Would it be impolite of me to correct them?

4. I have been studying English for three years. I'm quite good at reading and writing but listening is very difficult for me. My teacher suggested that I listen to the BBC World Service every day in order to understand English better. The problem is that it's hard for me to understand every word. Do you have any ideas about how to make listening to the radio less difficult? I like to listen to news very much.

5. I have studied English for five years at school but for the past six months I have been using the Internet and books to learn. There are lots of materials to choose but I'm not sure what is best for me and how I should use them. I really would like to take some international examination but don't know how to study without help. Should I take a course in my local school – which is a little expensive for me now – or is it possible to prepare for the exam on my own?

1.      In his inaugural speech the president announced that the situation in education is the key to the future prosperity. A computer game: The Lost Statue

In this game you are in a small country called Neverland. It is a deserted place. The weather there is terrible. It rains a lot and there are strong winds. The only people there are two young brothers. They live alone in their small house on the beach. In the game, you are one of the boys – Josh and Frank. Josh loves the beach very much and he is good at windsurfing. Frank is interested in doing quizzes and playing guessing games.

One day, they meet a strange man. He collects old things. He needs to find a small statue from the Stone Age and he asks the boys for help.

You decide to help the man. First, you talk to the man and learn about the lost statue. Then, with your brother, organize a trip around Neverland to look for it. Dear Sir,

Last Tuesday evening I went with two friends to your restaurant for my 15th birthday. I’d booked the table for eight o’clock and we arrived about ten minutes late, but that was not a problem. The waiter, who was very polite, showed us to our table and we studied the menu. I ordered a fish pie and my friends ordered some salads. However, after about fifteen minutes, the waiter informed us that there was no more fish pie. He apologized and suggested ordering something else. I looked at the menu again and decided to have the same as my friends – a salad.

When the food came, it was very good. After we’d finished, we decided to order some desserts. The waiter said that, unfortunately, it was too late. There wasn’t enough time for us to order desserts. He said he was very sorry but our table was reserved by another group at nine and we would have to leave.

We paid the bill and left feeling very disappointed. It spoilt my birthday. Nobody told us that there was a time limit. It was very unsatisfactory and I doubt that we’ll go to your restaurant again.

The Minoans lived on the island of Crete in Greece. It was the earliest European civilization and it started about 4,500 years ago and disappeared in about 1450 BC. It is named after the legendary King Minos who kept a Minotaur (half men, half bull) under his palace.

Пояснительная записка к итоговому тесту по английскому языку за курс основной общеобразовательной школы

     Экзаменационные тесты по английскому языку за курс основной школы для учащихся 9 класса разработаны на основе примерной программы основного общего образования по иностранным языкам (английский язык).

     Целью проведения итогового теста является объективная оценка качества знаний учащихся, приобретенных ими за курс основной школы.

     Тест состоит из 3 блоков: «Лексико-грамматический», «Чтение» и «Страноведение».

     Лексико-грамматический блок включает в себя 18 заданий различного уровня сложности и предполагает контроль знаний  грамматических явлений, изученных учащимися, таких как множественное число существительных, употребление артиклей, местоимений, степеней сравнения прилагательных, предлогов, видовременных форм глагола, согласования времен, модальных глаголов, неличных форм глаголов, а также знаний норм словообразования и порядка слов в предложении.

     Блок «Чтение» содержит текст объемом около 150 слов и 4 задания к нему, которые предполагают проверку уровня сформированности умений учащихся в двух видах чтения: 1) понимание основного содержания прочитанного; 2) умения извлекать необходимую информацию из текста.

     Задания по прочитанному тексту предполагают контроль понимания учащимися логических связей, умение выделять основную мысль и извлекать нужную информацию.

     В блок «Страноведение» включены задания социокультурного характера, предполагающие проверку знаний основных сведений о странах изучаемого языка.

     Все задания в экзаменационных тестах составлены в соответствии с I, II, III и IV уровнем сложности и оцениваются по балльной системе, т. е. каждый правильный ответ оценивается в один балл. Максимальное количество баллов – 24.

     Инструкция к выполнению каждого задания дается на русском языке, т. к. чтение инструкции не должно создавать дополнительной сложности для учащихся.

     Учащимся дается 40 минут для выполнения теста. Пользоваться словарем не разрешается.

     К тесту прилагаются ключи для проверки правильности выполнения заданий учащимися.

     In 1775, when the American War of Independence began, George Washington was chosen to lead the American army. Washington knew his job would be difficult. The army was small. The soldiers were untrained and had few guns. The British army was large and strong. Its soldiers were very well trained.

     Early battles showed Washington’s problems. His army was easily defeated in the battle of New York. Then Washington thought of a plan.       From the beginning the Royal Society established close connections with scientists who were working in other countries. Many famous scientists were elected in the Royal Society.        The first stamp in the world was an English stamp. It was made in 1840 to pay the postage on letters going to different parts of the country.

       Stamps are always interesting because they have pictures on them of the countries they came from; pictures of animals and birds living in jungles or on far-away islands; and pictures showing people dressed in their national costumes.

From the beginning, the Royal Society established close connections with scientists who were working in other countries. Many famous scientists were elected in the Royal Society. Non-British scientists belonging to the society are called “Foreign Members”. British members are called “Fellows of the Royal Society”. We can see the initials F.R.S. written after their names. The number of foreign members is only ten per cent of the total. All of the foreign members are outstanding scientists: almost half of them are Nobel Prize winners.

     The Royal Society works for international co-operation in science. It exchanges delegations with the Academies of Science of different countries. There is an agreement among them for an exchange of scientists, lecturers and students. The Society’s friendly co-operation all over the world has continued for three hundred years.

     Our Russian scientists also take an active part in the activities of the Royal Society.
