Christmas is the most important holiday of the year in Great Britain. People celebrate Christmas on 25 December. On this day many people travel home to celebrate this holiday with their families.

There are a lot of Christmas traditions. People decorate their homes with lights and wreaths. Children like to make snowmen and decorate Christmas trees with lights, bells, stars and balls. The most popular colours are red and green. People prepare presents (gifts) and put them under the Christmas Tree. They also write special Christmas cards. Children often hang stockings near the fireplace and write letters to Santa Claus. They believe that Santa Claus is a kind old man with a big sack (bag) who wears red clothes and go on the sleigh with reindeer. He puts sweets, candy canes and small toys in children’s stockings.

In the evening of the Christmas Day the family enjoys a big dinner with turkey and pudding.

After dinner they gather in the living room to listen to the Queen on television.

In the streets people sing Christmas songs, or Christmas carols, and collect money for charity.

At midnight the British listen to the speech of their Queen or King and make wishes.
