The LONGEST river

in the USA is the Mississippi.

It is 2350 miles long.

The Mississippi carries so much soil and rocks along with it that

its nickname is

the BIG MUDDY.

 

 The TALLEST building in the USA is the Sears Tower in Chicago. It’s 442 metres high! It has 110 stories and 16,000 windows. Untill 11996 the Sears Tower was the tallest building in the world.

There are places

in the USA

where 90% of people are Spanish speakers.


American movies are full of big fast cars and car chases. The bad guys go straight past red traffic lights. The police do the same. In fact, american people drive very carefully, and the traffic is very slow. The speed limit in most states is 88 km per hour!


In the United States there are “federal laws” which work across the country. But there are also “state laws” which are different in each state. Age limits for starting school, driving cars, drinking alcohol, getting married and having guns are different in each state.


Bill Gate’s Microsoft has its headquarters in Seattle.


Washigton, the capital of the USA, is in the District of Columbia (D.C.). The special district is not in any state, because it’s the home of the federal government. It’s named after Christopher Columbus.


Elvis Prestley’s house in Memphis is the second most visitied building in the USA (after the White House in Washington D.C.)


The USA is the world’s most industrial country. Most of the industries are in the north-eastern part of the country, especially in the area around the Great Lakes. The US produces 25% of the world’s carbon dioxide (the gas that is responsible for global warming).


The SMALLEST state in the USA is Rhode Island.

It is about 1/500 the size of Alaska.


The Statue of Liberty 

is 45.3 metres tall!

Lady Liberty is indeed very big- one of her fingers is 2.44 metres long.


Death Valley in California is the HOTTEST place in the USA. In fact, it’s one of the hottest places in the world. The temperature here can reach 54 degrees! Many people died trying to cross it in the 19th century.


The BIGGEST city

in the USA is New York. 

Over 8 million people live here. During the day the population grows to over 20 million, as people travel to the city to work.


Hollywood 

in Los Angeles is the centre of American movie industry. Many famous actors and other celebrities live in or near Hollywood.


Texans

are very proud of their state and like to say that everything in Texas is bigger than anywhere else.


In Las Vegas

you can get married immediately.


New Orleans 

is one of the most beautiful American cities. But it hasn’t been very lucky with the weather.
