The dog in the movie theatre

I’m going to tell you an extraordinary thing that happened the other day.  The day

before yesterday, about 8 o’clock at night, a young woman approached the box office

of the best movie theatre in the city. She had with her an enormous dog with a

Beautifully groomed coat. She bought 2 tickets and went toward the door

followed by her dog.  The manager of the theatre spoke to her, saying:

I’m sorry, Miss, but dogs aren’t allowed in this theatre.

You don’t understand. This is a special case. My dog is so well trained and so

intelligent, he’s almost human.

I see, that you have an exceptional animal, but …

I promise you that if there is any problem, we’ll leave the theatre immediately. I assure you that this dog isn’t like any other dog you’ve ever seen.

Well, all right. I’ll let you go in since the theatre is almost empty tonight.

Nevertheless, your dog will have to behave himself or you’ll have to leave.

Several hours go by and now the people are leaving the theatre. The manager sees the girl with her dog:

I congratulate you. You were right. Your dog behaved very well. I’ve been

watching him and it’s amazing how quiet he was.

I told you that he’s well-trained and very inteligent.

He certainly is. It even seemed as if he was enjoing the movie.

Oh, he did enjoy it. He liked th film very much. But he liked the book much better.

8. From the history. Elizabeth I Tudor

Ruled in 1558-1608 – 50 years. Was considered illegal daughter  of  her father  (a bastard). She was put to the throne when England was a weak poor country without her own fleet and strong army, constantly at war with France, Spain and Scotland.

She isn’t loved by Catholics because she’s a Protestant, they try to overthrow her and kill. So, at first she has a lot of enemies in her own country. Her enemies send boys to the war against Scotland, England is badly defeated  and the Queen is accused of it. The bishops are sure that Elizabeth will be overthrown at last. But  very clever, corageous, wise and cunning queen prepares the cleverest way out – she preposes the single church of England and she wins the vote with the help of her ancestors.

9. Get acquainted with some words and phrases

10. Watch the extract from the film “Elizabeth I”

Elizabeth  1558-1608

The virgin queen

Her Majesty

- God placed me here! My people are my only care

It’s virtue to have a single church of England

- Heresy!

It’s not a heresy, my grace, this is a common sense- the most English virtue!

You would improve everything if you’d marry

Marry, who, my grace? France? Spain? Or one of each of you?

Each of you must vote, not for myself but for my people.

I have no desire to make windows to men’s souls!

Remember! In your hands upon this moment lies the Future happiness of my people and a peace in this Royal!

- She has won the argument

    - By what count?

    - By 5, my grace, by 5!

11. Answer the questions and retell the episode using the words.

Why was the queen so angry with her councils?

Why did she cry?

What did Wolsing (her safeguard) advise her?

Could she be overthrown?

What kind of way out did she find?

Why did the lords shout “Heresy!”?

What did she answer them?

Why did the lords laugh?

Where were the bishops?

Why did the lords laugh at one of them?

Did she win the argument? By what count?
