A. Florida has always been very popular with tourists from different parts of the world. It presents a lucky combination of pleasant climate and man-made attractions. Thousands of parents and their children go there in search of fun, sun and entertainment. They enjoy theme parks like the Walt Disney World Resort and the Sea World Resort, numerous movie studios, water parks, pools and other facilities.

B. One of the most popular places is the Walt Disney Resort, the biggest amusement park in the world. It includes different attractions for younger tourists. Children can enjoy magic exhibits or explore science at special centers situated within the area of the resort. They can also watch wild animals at the Animal Kingdom or enjoy one of the world movies at Disney Studios.

C. However, there is more to see in Florida than just Mickey Mouse. Florida is probably the sunniest state of the USA. Its nickname is the ‘Sunshine State’. Though Florida is one of the flattest states in America, its landscape is really amazing. Lakes with fresh water, hills, forests, eight miles of coastline and countless small islands create a fantastic atmosphere in the resort.

D. Florida provides an opportunity for adventure on both land and water. There are many types of unique wildlife, including dolphins and whales, deer and black bears. F. The warm summers and mild winters make Florida an ideal place for different sports like boating, diving, surfing and water skiing. Not only are water sports popular — lots of people go there to play golf and they even plan their vacations around golfing! There are more golf courses in Florida than in any other state of the USA. There are state and private courses within a short driving distance of each other.

G. Hurricanes are a fact of Florida life. They can affect some vacations that is why it’s wise to avoid Florida in certain months. The Florida Hurricane Season officially starts on June 1 and ends on November 30. Historically, September is the most active month of the year. The National Hurricane Centre monitors the territory of Florida in order to warn the people of the danger well beforehand.

Big Ben

London has many landmarks, but none is more popular than the Elizabeth Tower which is located at one end of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London. The famous tower is the third tallest clock tower in the world. It is probably the most well-known attraction in not only London, but Great Britain as well. But, what makes this tower so special?

The Elizabeth Tower is home to the largest four-faced chiming bell in the world. The official name of the bell is The Great Bell. However, its nickname Big Ben is more popular than the official name. Nobody knows exactly why the bell got such a nickname. There are two main versions. The first one is that the bell was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, the British engineer who managed the casting of the bell. His name was put on the bell itself. The second version suggests that the bell was named after Ben Caunt, a famous heavyweight boxing champion of that time.

Big Ben weighs 13.5 British tons, which is about the size of two large African Elephants. It is 2.2 meters high and has a diameter of 2.7 meters. Big Ben chimes every hour. The clock tower was completed in 1859 and Big Ben first chimed over London on July 11 that year.

There are also four nameless quarter bells inside the tower. They chime every fifteen minutes, playing the world famous Westminster chimes. They can be heard from a distance of as far as 12 kilometres!

Amazingly, the bells still chimed and the clock still showed the exact time after the Houses of Parliament were bombed during World War II. The building was completely destroyed, but the

tower and the clock weren’t damaged.

The clock faces are 7 metres in diameter. The hour hand is 2.7 metres long, and the minute hand is 4.3 metres long. There is an inscription in Latin in gold letters along the bottom of each of the clock faces, ‘O Lord, keep safe our Queen Victoria the First’.

The clock’s time is kept accurate. There have been some incidents when the clock was inaccurate. In 1949, birds damaged the minute hand and made it slow down by 4.5 minutes.

Nowadays clockmakers climb the Elizabeth Tower 3 times a week to wind Big Ben's Сlock, whose timing can be affected by the weather, atmospheric pressure or simply by its age. Big Ben’s Сlock is over 150 years old.

At the top of the Elizabeth Tower there is a lantern known as the Ayrton Light, which is lit whenever the House of Commons or the House of Lords is in session.

The Big Ben chimes to greet the New Year and it is a starting point for the New Year’s celebration of the entire country. The BBC also broadcasts the chiming of the bells on Remembrance Day to mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month; the end of World War I.

There are 334 steps to the top of the clock tower. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public for viewing the city.

According to a survey done in 2008, Big Ben is the most popular tourist attraction in London.

The Best Picture

When Sebastian was a boy at school, his favourite lesson was art, and he won several prizes for it. Once he left school, he got a position as a clerk in a bank, but three times a week he went to evening classes in art, and whenever he had time at the weekends, he painted.

He painted in a very modern manner- mysterious objects and shapes, women with three pink eyes, large blank areas, and so on.

After a few months he thought, ‘Perhaps I can sell some of my pictures and get enough money to afford to leave the bank and become a real artist. Then I can travel around as much as I like, and go to foreign museums, and see other artiats’ paintions, and study in other countries when I feel like it. Though I try to make the best of the job and I don’t regard the work as difficult- at least not at present- I don’t like life in a bank. I only enjoy paintings’.

In the bank, Sebastian sometimes had to deal with a man who owned a picture shop, and after he had had a few conversations with him, Sebastian invited him to his home one evening to see some of his works. “Then perhaps you could tell me whether I can really be a good artist and get some money from my painting”, Sebastian said hopefully.

The man said he was prepared to come and see what he thought of Sebastian’s work, so he arrived one evening at Sebastian’s home. Sebastian took the man to his studio and started to show him some of his pictures, with some pride and hope.

The man looked at them one after the other while Sebastian watched his face, but to Sebastian’s disappointment the man did not say anything, and his expression did not change at any of the either.

Then, when he had finished, he looked around, and his glance fell on something else. A happy look came over his face for the first time, and he said, “Now I like this one very much! It’s so full of deep felling! I’m sure I could sell this one for you!

“That,” said Sebastian, “is the place where I clean the paint off my brushes.”

  1. Planning can be better
  2. Sad, but true
  3. Looking for the advantages of mild climate
  4. Very unusual indeed
  5. Sad figures
  6. An important social duty
  7. A good way to discover local sights
  8. Muddy walking routs

  1. Gardening is a well-known favourite. As the weather in Britain is rather mild, British people manage to do gardening almost all the year round. Sometimes this can be just weeding and sometimes, serious vegetable and fruit growing. In fact, the British can always find plenty to do in either a small or a big garden. Every Sunday morning (except for winter) they come out to mow their lawns. The British see an untidy lawn, not only as a sigh of laziness, but also as disrespect to the others.
  2. Walking is also very popular. Ask any British person if they have a pair of walking boots and the answer will probably be yes. Except for dry summer days, the beautiful British countryside is muddy, so you need a good pair of walking boots to enjoy your walk. Walking as a leisure activity has a long tradition in England. You can buy a variety of maps and guides to walking routes. Organized walking with a group of like-minded people and a good guide is also very popular.
  3. And, of course, the famous British eccentricity is the cause of such sports as extreme ironing. Extreme ironing is a serious sport where teams of people compete at who can do their ironing in more extreme conditions (for example, under the water or riding a bicycle). Extreme ironing is now an international sport with serious competitions and organized events.
  4. Of course, not all British people keep fit by engaging in extreme sports. Many go to the gym, swimming pool or fitness classes. However, it has to be said that the British are not the sportiest nation in the world. You see, watching TV often gets in the way. Increasingly, British people spend their free time watching TV. The only comforting thing is that they are not on their own-most of the world seems to be doing the same!
  5. As far as actually going away on holiday, many British people choose to spend their holidays abroad, preferably somewhere warm and dry. Spain, France and Greece are regular countries due to convenient location and kind climate. It’s a good idea to have a change of scenery and see new places without too much trouble.
  6. Unlike the popular belief, winter is a very busy time for companies selling holidays. People get so fed up with bad weather and stress that they just cannot wait to get away. Some people also buy holidays for the summer or even next year during the festive season as it can work out significantly cheaper than buying closer to the tome of travel.
  7. According to statistics, the number of family breakdowns doubles in the post-Christmas period as a result of stress, debt and over-consumption of alcohol. As it is a well-known fact, some magazines publish tips on how to cope with Christmas, such as yoga, meditation or holidays abroad.

The Mystery of Agatha Christie

Agatha Christie is one of the world’s best-known and best-loved authors. Her famous detectives, Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, and her brilliant constructed novels have caught the imagination of generations of readers. Though she lived to an old age and wrote many books, she didn’t reveal much about her personal life.

In December 1926, an incident happened which could be a detective story in itself. At the height of her success with her first novel, she suddenly disappeared for ten days. At that time, she was distressed because her husband was having an affair with another woman and wanted a divorce. She was sleeping badly, she couldn’t write and she was eating very little.

On Friday 3rd of December, Agatha told her secretary Charlotte that she wanted a day along. When Charlotte returned in the evening, she found that the garage doors were open and the maids looked frightened. According to them, Mrs. Christie had got into her car at about eleven in the evening and driven off quickly without saying anything to anybody.

Charlotte waited anxiously all night but Agatha didn’t return. Early the next morning the police found Agatha’s empty car with its lights on. There was no trace of Agatha.

A nation-wide hunt for the missing novelist began. The police were suspicious. Did the servants know anything else? Was Agatha’s husband hiding anything? Newspapers printed wild stories about her disappearance- that she had committed suicide, that she had been kidnapped, that she had run away with her secret lover. Some even suggested that she had planned the whole thing as a publicity stunt.

The mystery ended ten days later when Agatha was found alive and well in Harrogate, a health spa in Yorkshire. Her husband explained to the waiting reporters that she had lost her memory. But to this day, nobody really knows that happened during those ten days.
