The Elephant's Child

Author:

This is a story about the Elephant’s child. It is a true story and it happened just so. Long, long ago the elephant had no trunk. He had only a blackish, bulgy nose, as big as a boot that he could wriggle about from side to side; but he couldn't pick up things with it. But there was one Elephant, a new Elephant, an Elephant's Child, who was full of 'satiable curiosity, and that means he asked ever so many questions. And he lived in Africa, and he filled all Africa with his 'satiable curiosity. He asked his tall aunt, the Ostrich, why her tail-feathers grew just so, and his tall aunt the Ostrich spanked him with her hard, hard claw. He asked his tall uncle, the Giraffe, what made his skin spotty, and his tall uncle, the Giraffe, spanked him with his hard, hard hoof . And still he was full of 'satiable curiosity! He asked questions about everything that he saw, or heard, or felt, or smelt, or touched, and all his uncles and his aunts spanked him. And still he was full of 'satiable curiosity!

One fine morning the Elephant's Child asked a new fine question that he had never asked before. He asked: 'What does the Crocodile have for dinner?'

Then everybody said: 'Hush!’ and they spanked him immediately and directly, without stopping, for a long time.

By and by, when that was finished, he came upon Kolokolo Bird.

And  the Elephant's Child said :'My father has spanked me, and my mother has spanked me for my 'satiable curiosity, but I want to know what the Crocodile has for dinner!'

Then Kolokolo Bird said:'Go to the banks of the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River and find out.'

That very next morning this curious Elephant's Child took a hundred pounds of bananas and seventeen melons, and said to all his dear families: 'Goodbye. I am going to the Limpopo River to find out what the Crocodile has for dinner.' And they all spanked him once more for luck.

Then he went away. He went till he came to the banks of the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River as Kolokolo Bird had said.

Now you must know and understand that till that very week, and day, and hour, and minute, this 'satiable Elephant's Child had never seen a Crocodile. It was all his 'satiable curiosity.

The first thing that he found was a Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake.

''Excuse me,' said the Elephant's Child most politely, 'but have you seen such a thing as a Crocodile?'

the Snake: 'Have I seen a Crocodile? What will you ask me next?'

the Elephant's Child: ''Excuse me, but could you tell me what he has for dinner?'

Then the Snake spanked the Elephant's Child with his tail.

So he said good-bye very politely to the Snake and went on till he trod on what he thought was a log of wood. But it was really the Crocodile and the Crocodile winked one eye--like this!

Elephant's Child: ''Excuse me, but have seen a Crocodile?'

The Crocodile said :'Come here, Little One. Why do you ask such things?'

The Elephant's Child said most politely: 'Excuse me, but my father has spanked me, my mother has spanked me and I don't want to be spanked any more.'

The Crocodile: 'Come here, Little One, for I am the Crocodile,' and he wept crocodile-tears to show it was quite true.

Then the Elephant's Child : “Will you please tell me what you have for dinner?'

The Crocodile said: 'Come here, Little One and I'll whisper.'

Then the Elephant's Child put his head down close to the Crocodile's mouth, and the Crocodile caught him by his little nose and said:

Crocodile: 'I think to-day I will begin with Elephant's Child!'

The Elephant's Child was much annoyed and he said, speaking through his nose, like this, 'Let go! You are hurting me!'

Then the Snake came up and said: 'My young friend, if you don’t pull as hard as you can, the Crocodile will carry you away into the river.'

Then the Elephant's Child sat down and pulled, and pulled, and pulled, and his nose began to stretch. And the Crocodile pulled, and pulled, and pulled.

Then the Elephant's Child felt his legs slipping, and he said through his nose: 'This is too much for me!'

Then the Snake came up and knotted himself round the Elephant's Child's legs and said: “Now we must pull as hard, as we can because if we don’t, the Crocodile will carry us away into the river.”

So he pulled, and the Elephant's Child pulled, and the Crocodile pulled; but the Elephant's Child and the Snake pulled hardest; and at last the Crocodile let go of the Elephant's Child's nose.

Then the Elephant's Child said: 'Thank you'.

The Snake: ‘What are you doing?

The Elephant's Child : “Excuse me, but my nose is badly out of shape.”

The Snake: “Some people don’t know what is good for them.”

And then a fly came and bit the Elephant's Child on the shoulder, and before he knew what he was doing he lifted up his trunk and hit that fly dead.

The Snake: “Advantage number one! Try and eat a little now.”

Before he thought what he was doing the Elephant's Child put out his trunk and took the bananas, and put it into his own mouth.

The Snake: “Advantage number two! Don't you think the sun is very hot here?

The Elephant's Child : 'It is,' said the Elephant's Child, and before he thought what he was doing he took the water from the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo river and watered his head.

The Snake: “Advantage number three! And do you like to be spanked again?'

The Elephant's Child: “Excuse me but I don’t like it at all.”

The Snake: “Would you like to spank somebody?

The Elephant's Child: “I’d like it very much indeed

The Snake: “Well, you will find that your nose is very useful.”

The Elephant's Child:  'Thank you. And now I think I'll go home to my family'

So the Elephant's Child went home across Africa shaking his trunk. One dark evening he came back to all his dear families.

The Elephant's Child : “How do you do?

They were very glad to see him, and immediately said:

1st brother: “Come here!

2nd brother: “I will spank you for your curiosity!

The Elephant's Child: “Pooh, you don’t know anything about spanking and I'll show you.” Then he knocked two of his dear brothers head over heels.

1st brother: “Where did you learn that trick?

2nd brother: “What have you done to your nose?

The Elephant's Child: 'I got a new one from the Crocodile.

Giraffe: 'It looks very ugly!'

The Elephant's Child: 'It does but it's very useful,' and he spanked his uncle Giraffe.

He pulled out his tall Ostrich aunt's tail-feathers; then that bad the Elephant's Child spanked all his dear families for a long time but he never let any one touch Kolokolo Bird. At last his dear families ran one by one to the banks of the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River to borrow new noses from the Crocodile. When they came back nobody spanked anybody any more; and ever since that day all the Elephants you will ever see, have trunks like the trunk of the 'curious Elephant's Child.
