   In  spring  and  summer  Peter  works  on  the farm.  In autumn the farmer gives  him three coins (монеты).   Peter takes  them  and  goes  to  a large town.  He walks on and on in the forest.  It's cloudy and windy.   Soon  he  meets  a  mouse.   The  mouse  says: "Peter,   help  me!  It's  cold  and  rainy.   My  children are hungry.   Give me your coins,   please.   I'll help you,   too."  Peter thinks:   "Why  not?  People will  give me  some bread  to  eat."  So  Peter gives   the  mouse his coins.

   Peter  comes  to  the  town.  A beautiful but  sad girl  Mary  lives  in  the  town.   She  can't  find  her nice  ring  (кольцо).   Her  father  says,   "I'll  give  a  lot of  coins  to  the  man  who  will  find  Mary's  ring." Peter asks  the  mouse  to  help  him.   The  mouse runs  under  the  table,   behind  the  armchair,  between the  sofa  and  the  wardrobe.   Look!  The  ring  is  in the  left  corner  of  the  kitchen  next  to  the  fireplace. Mary is happy.

Dear  Alex,

Thank  you   for  your   letter.   In   summer   I   was   in   the   country, too.   In  June   my   mum   took   my   brother  and   me  to  the   Black Sea.   The   sea   was   blue   and   nice.   The  weather  was  sunny  and hot.   We   swam   and   dived   a   lot.  We   saw  dolphins   in   the   sea.

They  were   big   and   strong.   I   think  dolphins   are  the   nicest animals   in   the   sea.

It was the first day at school. It was nine o'clock. All the pupils were in the classroom. They knew they had a new teacher — Miss Chatter.

After the bell Miss Chatter came into the room. She was kind and nice.

"Good morning, children," she said and smiled. The lesson began. But the pupils didn't do what their new teacher said. They spoke loudly and ran in the classroom.

Suddenly  it  became  dark  and  very  cold  for  a  minute. The pupils sat still at their desks and looked at Miss Chatter.

Their new teacher took Oliver's pen, looked at it and said: "Three, two, one!" The blue pen became red and turned into a nice red umbrella. Miss Chatter took the umbrella and touched Oliver's chair. The chairs began to dance with the children sitting on them. Oliver was happy. All pupils laughed. Soon all the chairs and the pupils danced in the classroom.

Miss Chatter opened the umbrella and the rain of sweets began. The pupils were surprised but happy. "It's great!" Oliver said.

In the second lesson Miss Chatter and her pupils counted white rabbits and black kittens in the classroom, read stories about whales, talked with the goldfish. Children answered her questions, drew on the walls of the classroom and learned funny poems by heart. The pupils had a good time. They enjoyed Miss Chatter's lessons.

The next morning Oliver, Ann and their classmates ran to school. But there was a different teacher in the classroom — a new teacher.

"Where's  Miss  Chatter?"  asked  Ann.

"Who?"

"Our  teacher   —   Miss  Chatter!"  answered  Oliver.

"I don't know Miss Chatter. Let's begin our lesson," said the new teacher.

The children were sad. But Oliver saw Miss Chatter's red umbrella in the left corner of the classroom. He smiled.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN ENGLAND

In Great Britain school begins at the age of five. Many boys and girls usually leave school at the age of sixteen.

In England the school year begins in September, but not always on the first day of the month, as school never begins on Monday. The English think that Monday is not a good day to start school. So pupils usually begin their school year on the first Tuesday of September (not always on the 1st of September as we do). The weather is usually fine. It is warm. The sky is often blue and the sun is bright. Little children going to school with their parents on their first school day look so clean and nice. They don't have any bags or books with them, as there is no need for these things on their first day at school. Pupils will get them later. They will get exercise-books, pencils, pens, rulers and rubbers too.

Classes usually begin at nine. Pupils have a glass of milk or a glass of orange juice at eleven. At half past twelve or at one o'clock they usually have lunch - meat, pudding, juice, an apple or a cake. Their classes are not formal. They often sit an the carpet on the floor and listen to their teacher. They draw or play games. They often look at the animals they have at school - hamsters, rabbits or hares. Sometimes there are birds or fish in their classrooms.

Teachers usually read fairy-tales and stories to them or sometimes they tell them something interesting.  English pupils often play outdoors.

New Year's Day

I like New Year's Day, it is my favourite holiday. The 1st of January is a winter holiday and now it is the first day of the New Year. Peter the First changed the Russian calendar in 1699. He made the 31st of December, 1699 the last day of the year. The first of January 1700 became New Year's Day.

The 1st of January is in the middle of winter. The weather is usually fine and there is a lot of snow everywhere. As the 1st of January is a holiday I don't go to school and my parents don't go to work.

Our family prepares for this holiday beforehand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year's tree at the end of December. Our family has a tradition to buy it. I like to decorate the New Year's tree with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top. My mother and grandmother prepare our holiday supper and lay the table. I make a cake. All the members of our family clean the flat before this nice holiday and then each of us try to dress well.

We like to see the New Year in at home with our relatives.  At 12 o'clock we are sitting at the table and we are glad to see the New Year in. We say, "Best wishes for the New Year!". I hope that next year will be better than the last one.

The New Year's Day is always connected with our new hopes and dreams. It is a pleasant moment to get presents on the New Year's Eve. I usually get many nice useful things from my parents and relatives. My parents put their presents under the New Year's tree. We don't go to bed till morning, we watch TV, dance, eat tasty things and make jokes. I enjoy this holiday very much.

London

London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and cultural centre. It's one of the largest cities in the world. Its population is more than million people. London is situated on the river Thames. The city is very old and beautiful. It was founded more than two thousand years ago. Traditionally London is divided into several parts: the City, the West End, the East End and Westminster. The City is the oldest part of London, its financial and business centre.  Westminster is the most important part of the capital. It's the administrative centre. The Houses of Parliament, the seat of the British Government, are there. It's a very beautiful building with two towers and a very big clock called Big Ben. Big Ben is really the bell which strikes every quarter of an hour. Opposite the Houses of Parliament is Westminster Abbey. It's a very beautiful church built over 900 years ago. The tombs of many great statesmen, scientists and writers are there.

To the west of Westminster is West End. Here we find most of the big shops, hotels, museums, art galleries, theatres and concert halls.  In the West End there are wide streets with beautiful houses and many parks, gardens and squares. To the east of Westminster is the East End, an industrial district of the capital. There are no parks or gardens in the East End and you can't see many fine houses there. Most of the plants and factories are situated there. London has many places of interest. One of them is Buckingham Palace. It's the residence of the Queen. The English are proud of Trafalgar Square, which was named so in memory of the victory at the battle. The British Museum is the biggest museum in London. The museum is famous for its library -one of the richest in the world.

There are many streets in London which are known all over the world. Among them Oxford Street, Downing Street .Tourists are usually attracted not only by the places of interest but by the streets too.
