MEET MY HOMETOWN CLOSER

                                                           Учитель : Онорина Е.С.

_ad_g_03.bmpchasovnia.jpgI live in a small town of Berezovsky that is situated in Kemerovo region and I would like to tell you about this place.

The emblem of Berezovsky represents its leading industry – coal-mining. The birch leaf refers to the name of the town and the pneumatic pick symbolizes the most common and popular profession in the town, the profession of a minor. Today about 70% of the total number of working people of Berezovsky are occupied in coal-mining industry. There are 3 operating mines and 3 open-pit mines that extract over 9 million tons of coal every year. There are 2 coal-processing factories in the town. It is impossible to imagine the life of Berezovsky apart from coal and mines. We are proud of our outstanding miners and we will not forget the names of those who lost their lives extracting the “black gold”. A chapel was erected to honor the memory of the minors who were killed in the mines of our town.

Berezovsky has changed a lot in the last decade. It has a completely new face now. The old wooden buildings have been pulled down and in their places there are now modern sports grounds and fabulous flowerbeds. Some buildings have been cleaned and restored making the town look as if it has been revitalized. The Statue of Lenin on the central square has been replaced by a lovely fountain. Now it is one of the most favorite places for the local residents. There they can sit on the benches and chat or have peaceful walks with their children by the fountain. Near a small local church an impressive cathedral has been built recently. Doubtless, it is one of the main attractions of the town.

Our town is very young and the fact that most of its inhabitants are young people makes it really special. There are a lot of kindergartens, several secondary schools, 2 Lyceums and a vocational college in Berezovsky. Lyceum № 17 where I work is considered the best in the town. It is well-equipped and has 2 computer classes, modern labs, excellent sporting facilities both for the pupils and the teachers, a cozy canteen and a magnificent Assembly Hall, where different meetings, conferences and concerts are held. The pupils feel at home at school with lots of beautiful plants in the corridors, colorful parrots in the cages and gold fish in the aquarium.

Though our town is small and can be ignored by a very demanding visitor but still I am sure there is plenty to do and to see here. To begin with, you can visit the C:\Documents and Settings\Стас\Мои документы\Мои рисунки\img011.jpgtown museum and admire the paintings of the local artists E. Marchuck, Yu. Mefodyev and others or you can have a look at the works of V. Hvorostin made of birch bark.

In the town library you can spend peaceful hours reading books or magazines to your liking.

Don’t miss a chance to enjoy the performances of the local folk song groups and the dancing group organized by L.Terekhova. This group is well-known all over Russia and abroad.

Berezovsky is a town of serious working days and cheerful holidays. We invite you to the annual celebration of Miner’s day with colorful parades, funny competitions, and a gorgeous firework display. Famous pop singer come to our town on this day and sing their hits, the people all join in with them and dance to the music. Everybody has a great time.

Our small café “Ark-pizza” is well worth visiting too. There are varied menus which include a wide choice of pizzas and several types of delicious hamburgers. The friendly staff, comfortable seating and reasonable prices help to give this café an excellent atmosphere.

Also you can work along the main street, it is called Lenin prospect, and you feel at home because nearly every city or town in this country has a Lenin prospect or street. Your walk along the main street will be ideal for shopping since there are a lot of trendy boutiques where you can always find something to suit your pocket and tastes. Some years ago a modern shopping center was built to fulfill all shopping needs; it sells everything from clothes and books to roast chicken and caviar. It’s a fascinating place to visit with its huge halls, great variety of foods and extremely polite shop-assistants.

If you are looking for more active pastime the local fully-equipped gym is one of your most exciting options. With qualified staff and all the latest equipment, you can get a good workout and improve your fitness levels in no time. However if you choose to swim or unwind in a relaxing sauna, don’t forget to take advantage of our indoor swimming –pool “Dolphin”. If you are in a good shape it’s not bad to try horse-riding in summer or skiing in winter. We have a horse-riding sport club and an excellent skiing center with facilities for renting skis.

Alternatively, you can relax enjoying the picturesque natural scenery, taking photos and breathing in the clean fresh air. I would recommend it to anyone who has developed different allergies living in big polluted cities. Berezovsky is surrounded by boundless forests of spruces, pines, birches, aspens and cedars. The forests are abundant in mushrooms, berries and mosquitoes guarding these forests jealously. So if you want to check out the local wildlife it is advisable to take a mosquito repellent with you. Only after you get rid of these pestilent insects you may hope to see some other living beings such as badgers, hares, foxes, bears and even elks. These animals can still be found in our taiga in spite of the efforts of poachers.

All things considered, I can say that our small town is rather a pleasant place to live in. But don’t take my word for it - come and see for yourself.
