William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare is the most famous of all English writers.

People say that are two books you will always find in an English home, the Bible and the Works of William Shakespeare.

Shakespeare was born in Strafford-on-Avon. In 1564 and died there in 1616.

Oxygen is the most abundant of 104 elements. It was discovered in 1774 by Joseph Priestly, who obtained it by heating mercuric oxide.

In industry oxygen is obtained by fractional distillation of liquid air.

Oxygen is a colorless gas. It smells slightly of chlorine. It is denser than air and soluble in water. Oxygen doesn't burn but supports

burning.

Oxygen is used to produce iron from ore in a blast-furnace and convert iron into steel. It produces a higher furnace temperature and

gives a flame with a temperature of about 3,000°. This flame melts steel easily. Oxygen is also used for cutting and welding metal

sections.

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES IN THE USA

  1. Young people in the USA get higher education in colleges and universities. Students choose  “major” subject and make many courses in this subject.

UK Political System

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a constitutional monarchy. This means that Great Britain is governed by the Parliament and the Queen is Head of State.

The legislative power in the country is exercised by the Houses of Parliament. The British Parliament consists of two chambers: the House of Lords and the House of Commons The House of Lords is composed of hereditary and life peers and peeresses. The members of the House of Commons are elected by the people. They are elected from the constituencies in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The House of Commons is the real governing body of the United Kingdom

The executive power is exercised by Prime Minister and his Cabinet. The government is usually formed by the political party which is supported by the majority in the House of Commons. Prime Minister is the majority party leader and is appointed by the Queen. Prime Minister chooses a team of ministers, twenty of the ministers are in the Cabinet.

UK Political System

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a constitutional monarchy. It means that the government of the United Kingdom is by a hereditary sovereign, an elected House of Commons and a partly hereditary House of Lords.

The sovereign has the title of King (or Queen). The Sovereign has very few functions that really matter, such as the function of the arbiter of last resort in some matters. These matters can be dissolution of Parliament and invitations to form a government when there is no clear majority. The Queen is Elizabeth II.

The supreme legislative power is vested in the Parliament, which sits for 5 years unless sooner dissolved. The Parliament has two chambers: the House of Lords with about 830 hereditary peers, 26 spiritual peers, about 270 life peers and peeresses, and the House of Commons. The House of Commons has 650 popularly elected members. The House of Commons is the real governing body of the United Kingdom. In order to become a law, a new bill proposed by the Cabinet, must be approved by both houses of the Parliament. The Lords cannot veto a bill, but they can delay it for a maximum of one year. Financial bills cannot be delayed by the House of Lords.  

The executive power of the Crown is exercised by the Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister. The Prime Minister, normally the head of the party commanding a majority in the House of Commons, is appointed by the Sovereign. Prime Minister appoints the rest of the Cabinet. All ministers must be members of one or the other houses of the Parliament. They are individually and collectively responsible to the Crown and the Parliament. The Cabinet proposes bills and arranges business of the Parliament.

Government in Britain since 1945 has alternated between only two political parties, the Conservatives (the Tory) and Labor Party. No other party has been in office at all since 1945 and there have been no coalitions. The third long-established party, the Liberals, enjoyed moments of success, but no member of the Liberal Party has held government office since 1945.

WASHINGTON

Washington, the capital of the United States, is situated on the Potomac River in the District of Columbia. Washington is not the largest city in the United States but in the political sense it is the most important city.

Washington has one major business and that business is government. Many people living in Washington work for the federal government. At 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue there is the White House where the President lives and has his office.

The Capitol, with its great Hall of Representatives and the Senate, is the highest building in Washington. There is a low against building structures more than 90 feet high in the capital. With its beautiful buildings and its tree-lined avenues Washington attracts a lot of visitors.

The capital has world-known art galleries, museums and monuments. One of the most interesting museums in Washington is the National Art and Space Museum. Mark Twain, who lived from 1835 to 1910, is one of America`s most famous authors. He wrote many books, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Mark Twain`s own life was interesting enough to be a book.

Twain was born in the state of Missouri, near the Mississippi River. He came from a poor family. His father died when he was twelve, so he had to leave school. While he was a young man he worked as a river boat pilot. He steered boats up and down the long Mississippi River.

The Civil War, which started in 1861, made traveling on the Mississippi impossible. Twain went then west to Nevada. There he worked on a newspaper. In 1864 he went to California in search of gold. But the most important influence on Twain and his books was the Mississippi River. When Twain finally settled down, he lived in a house with a porch that looked like the deck of a riverboat. When his summer vacation was over, he returned home. The housekeeper met him very warmly, but Mr. Blake was very angry with her. She could not understand why he was so angry. Mr. Blake asked why she had not sent him his letters.

The poor woman explained to him that she could not get the key as it was in the locked letter box together with the letter.

Caruso knew that he was famous, but he liked to repeat the sentence, “No man is so well-known as he thinks he is.’

Once he was invited to the United States to give some concerts. When he was driving to New York, his car broke, and he had to stay at a farm house. Caruso could not repair his car by himself, so he asked the farmer to help him.

Daniel Defoe, a great English writer, had an interesting life. He traveled a lot, tried many professions, and wrote many books.

In 1712 Defoe met a sailor who told him a very interesting story. Alexander Zelkrik was the sailor`s name. He quarreled with his officer and was put ashore on an island near the coast of Chile. For more than four years he lived quite alone on the island. He was saved by a ship putting into this island for water. When the sailor returned to London, his story became the talk of the town. Several stories about him were printed, read, and forgotten.

Daniel Dafoe could not forget the story. The sailor`s experience made a great impression on him. He started writing a story. He chose an island in a different part of the world, changed the name of the main character, and created a very interesting book.

As Defoe was a journalist, he was able to make the story seem absolutely true. His book about Robinson Crusoe was a great success not only in Great Britain but also in many countries of the world. Both children and adults read it with great interest. However, the true story of Alexander Zelkrik is practically unknown today.

Joseph Turner lived in the 19th century. He was a famous English painter. His paintings were a great success. He was fond of dogs. One day his dog which he loved very much broke a leg.

In fact, it's not really the Queen's Speech, because she doesn't write it. The Government writes it for her. In the speech the Queen tells Parliament about the Government's plans for the next year.
  2. Oh, and that cushion is, actually, the famous Woolsack. And yes, there is wool inside it. It's a part of a very old tradition which started in the 14th century. It was put in Parliament to symbolise the importance of wool to the British economy at that time. The person who usually sits on the Woolsack is the Lord Chancellor. He presides over the House of Lords.
  3. The House of Commons is where MPs make decisions on new laws. There are two statues, one on each side of the arch. Both of these two men were Prime Ministers. One is David Lloyd George, and the other - Sir Winston Churchill. They represent the two main British political parties - the Labour Party and the Conservative Party. They have a tradition: if you're a Conservative, touch Churchill's shoe, and if you're Labour, touch Lloyd George's shoe.
  4. These are two long narrow corridors which are very important for the whole country because MPs come here to vote on bills for new laws. On the left there is the "aye", or yes, lobby. MPs who agree with a bill go there. On the right there is the "no" lobby for MPs who want to vote against the bill. Then the officials count the "ayes" and the "noes" to get the results. So in the British Parliament MPs don't vote by pushing a button; they vote with their feet.
  5. E. Now look at the floor. Can you see two red lines in front of the benches on each side of the chamber? That's part of a tradition too. The distance between these two lines is two swords' lengths. In the old days when MPs used to carry swords, it was dangerous if they got angry with each other. So these two lines are here to remind MPs that they shouldn't start a fight, and they can't go over this line when they are speaking in a debate.
  6. Westminster Hall is the oldest part of the Palace of Westminster, and it's more than a thousand years old. The son of William the Conqueror... Do you remember the Norman leader who won the Battle of Hastings? Well, it was his son who started the building of the hall. This building has seen a lot of famous events. In 1605 Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament, and in World War II bombs fell on it.

Пояснительная записка к срезовой контрольной работе

по английскому языку для учащихся 9-х классов, обучающихся по учебнику 9 –го класса авторов Кауфман К. и М.

     

    Данная проверочная работа предлагается учащимся 9-го класса по учебному материалу I раздела (“Hello, America!”), который был пройден учащимися в I четверти.

    Проверочная работа составлена в 4 вариантах и включает в себя 4 задания по следующим темам:

- задание №1 – «Нью-Йорк» (страноведческая информация);

-задание №2 – «Употребление и отсутствие артикля»;

-задание №3 – «Знание различных значений слов» (подбор синонимов);

- задание №4 – «Словообразование: суффиксы»

   Все задания составлены для проверки базового уровня обученности учащихся и определены в форме тестов. Тест оценивается в баллах. Максимальное количество баллов в работе – 20.

При наличии ошибок у учащихся предлагается следующая шкала оценивания тестов:

«5» - 18-20 баллов;

«4» - 15-17 баллов;

«3» - 12-14 баллов;

Менее 12 баллов – «2».

Инструктаж для учащихся по выполнению

срезовой контрольной работы по английскому языку в 9-м классе:

1. Задания не нужно переписывать.

2. Задания желательно выполнять в заданной последовательности, друг за другом от №1 до №4, но можно задания выполнять по своему выбору, лишь чётко и правильно определяя номер каждого выполняемого задания.

3. Ответы к заданиям выполняются в форме теста, например: 1. с.

4. Писать работу следует чётко и разборчиво, не допуская большого количества исправлений и помарок.

5. Не забудьте перед началом работы указать Ваши имя и фамилию, а также класс и его литеру.

 Washington is the capital of the United States of America. It is situated on the Potomac River in the District of Columbia. The District is named in honour of Columbus, the discoverer of America. The capital is named in honour of George Washington, the first President of America. Washington is not the largest city in the United States. But it is the most important city in the USA. The centre of the city is the Capitol, with its great Hall of Representatives and Senate Chamber.

The best-known monuments are the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. The heart of Washington is the Capitol, which is connected with the White House by Pennsylvania Avenue. Thousands of tourists visit Washington every day. The White House is the President's residence. All American presidents except George Washington (the White House was not yet built in his time), have lived in the White House. It was built in 1799.

The Washington Monument, the tallest structure in the USA, is in the Potomac River. It was opened to the public in 1888. It  is called the "Pencil" . The Lincoln Memorial is in the west of the Washington Monument. It is designed like a Greek temple.  The Jefferson Memorial is worth seen, too. It is situated south of the Washington monument near the Potomac River.
