2. Основная часть:
П: There is a lot to say about the role of books in our life. They play a very important part in everybody s life. Books are a source of information. Books are collected wisdom and experience of many generations. They are effective means of educating oneself. Do you like to read? What do you like to read?
У1: I like to read very much. When I feel like reading serious literature that is informative and educating I take biographies which give life stories of celebrated writes, painters, actors, scientists, political figures and others.
У2: When I am tired and want to relax I take a love story or detective story.
У3: I think that these books are not worth reading , because when reading them we create an unreal world which will make the real world of every day a source of bitter disappointment.
У4: I enjoy reading everything : fiction, books about travel, historical novels, philosophical works. I wish I had more time for reading. In the hurry of present life it is next to impossible to be curbed up in a chair with a book.
П: We are lucky to have books to different tastes. The man who invented printing was a genius. You can find them in every house. But very seldom people think about a long way the book has come. At first man learned to draw pictures, then letters and alphabetic writing appeared for a long time people used papyrus and sкins of different animals to write on. Then the Chinese invented paper.
У1: All the books were written by hand with pen and ink.
У2: Often many years were spent to make one copy of a book. This made books very expensive.
У3: At last men learned how to print. Johann Gutenberg s name will be famous in ages.
П: The man who invented the art of printing in Russia was Ivan Fedorov. He started his work in Moscow, then moved to other countries. In 1574 he printed the first Azbuka.
У1,2,3: How interesting!
П: Well, and now let s play the chain game:
1)У1: What are you reading?
У2: It is “ War and Peace” by Tolstoy. And what are you reading?
У3: It is “Romeo and Juliet” by Shakespeare. And what are you reading?….
2)У1: What were you reading when I came in?
У2: It was “ War and Peace” by Tolstoy. And what were you reading when came in?
У3: It was “Romeo and Juliet” by Shakespeare. And what were you reading when I rang you up?…
3)У1: Who wrote the “ Divine Comedy”
У2: I think it is by Dante. Who wrote “Hamlet”?
У3: I am sure it is by Shakespeare. Who wrote “ Madame Bauvarie”?…..

П: Well done , boys and girls . And now let s speak about your favorite writers. I know you have prepared some reports. Come to the blackboard .
У1: I am fond of reading. My favorite writer is Fedor Dostoevsky. The Russian writer Dostoevsky regarded as one of the world s great novelists. In Russia he was surpassed only by Leo Tolstoy. F. M. Dostoevsky was born on Nov. 11, 1821, in a Moscow hospital where his father was a physician. At 13 he was sent to Moscow boarding school, then to a military engineering school in St. Petersburg. Shortly after graduating he resingned his commission in oder to devote his time to writing. Dostoevsky had published two novels, several sketches and short stories. He suffered from mild epilepsy. It grew worse in prison. After four years in prison he was sent to a military station in Siberia. There in 1857 he met and married a wisdom named Marie Isaeva. In 1860 Dostoevsky was back in St. Petersburg. He had been separated from his wife but visited her in Moscow before her death in 1864. In 1867 he married his young stenographer Anna Snitkina. He died on Feb. 9, 1881, in St. Petersburg.
У2: My favorite writer is Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin. Pushkin is the most important Russian writer of all time, like Shakespeare in England or Dante in Italy. Pushkin was born in Moscow in 1799 into an upper-class family. In 1811 he entered a lyceum at Tsarskoye Selo.The education offered lyceum shapered Pushkin s life. In 1817 he graduated the lyceum and began to work in the foreign office in St. Petersburg. In 1824 for his letters against the Tsar Nicholas 1 allowed Pushkin to return to Moscow. Pushkin felt in love with Natalya Goncharova. In 1830 they got married. His wife was suspected of an affair with Baron Georges d Antes, this became the subject of gossip. Pushkin was wounded and died two days later. Pushkin was Russia s greatest poet. In his works he was firstly influenced by 18th century poets, and then by Byron. Finally he developed his own style, which was realistic, but many “ the sun of Russian literature”, belongs among the foremost poet and writers of the world.
У3: My favorite writer is Mark Twain. His real name was Samuel Langhorn Clemens, but he is better known by his professional name, Mark Twain. He was born in Missouri in 1835. He never finished elementary school. He got his education mainly from his observations of people and events on the western bank of the Mississippi River. In 1871 he married and moved to Hartford, Connecticut, where he wrote his two masterpieces: “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”. Because of his sense of humor and wit and the stile with which he wrote about frontier life of the common people in the American West, many people feel that Twain s books marked the beginning of modern American literature.
У5: I am fond of literature. My favorite writer is A. I. Kuprin. He was born in a small town not far from Penza. His family was poor one. From early boyhood Kuprin had to work hard for his living. He began his literary activity with writing short reports for his paper. First it was done to make ends meet. Then he began to write short stories about the working people. Kuprin is famous for his short stories, though he wrote some novels too. The leading theme of his literary works is the man and his position in society. His short stories are vivid, full of the author s charming, personality and they are true to life.
П: Thank you for your reports. We are lucky to have books to different tastes. And now let s listen to the song “ When I m Sixty-Four” by the “ Beatles”.
П: We had a rest and now open your books on p. 193 . There is a text. It is most interesting to compare literatures of different countries. You may find out something new about the Comparative Literary Studies from the following article “ Comparative Literary Studies”. First of all let s read the text and then you will fulfil some tasks:
- You take a Literature course at Oxford University. You d like to specialize in comparative literary studies. Consult your tutor on what a comparatist might do and choose the subject for your own study.
- You are a specialist on Comparative Literary Studies. Inform the students of the courses they make take . Ask them to choose a particular course for the individual study . Let the students explain why they prefer this or that course .
- You were asked by the Professor who reads the course on Comparative Literary Studies to prepare for the seminar “ Introduction to Comparative Literary Studies”:
- make up a plan of your speech;
- report on the topic;
- discuss the report with your fellow-students and let them say what they think about it.-----У1,2,3,4…..
П: Thank you very much . You coped very well with your work . In conclusion of our lesson I d like to know if you like poetry and I d like to listen to your favorite poems .
У1: I remember the first lines by heart of a beautiful poem about love:
Shall I die? Shall I fly
Lover s baits and deceits sorrow breeding?
Shall I tend ? Shall I send ,
Shall I sue , and not rue my proceeding ?
In all duty her beauty
Binds me her servant for ever .
If she scorn , I mourn ,
I retire to despair , joying never .
П: Wonderful ! Thank you.
У2: I d like to tell you the poem “ The Sick Rose” by W. Blake:
O Rose , than art sick !
The invisible worm ,
That flies in the night ,
In the howling strom ,
Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy :
And his dark secret
Does thy life destroy .
У3: I d like to tell you the poem by L. Hughes
Hold fast to dreams die
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly .
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go ,
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow .
У4: I like the poetry by P. B. Shelly.
П: What does he write about?
У4: What do all poets write about ? About love , about people , about everything they see around them :
Away , away from men and towns ,
To the wild woods and the downs-
To the silent wilderness
Were the soul need not repress
Its music , lest it should , not find ,
An echo in another s mind ,
While the touch of Nature s art
Harmonizes heart to heart .
П: Thank you very much . What a lovely poem !
У5: I suggest that you listen to the poem by G. G. Byron :
There is a pleasure in the pathless woods ,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore ,
There is society , where none intrudes ,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar;
I love not Man the less , but Nature more ,
From these our interviews , in which I steal
From all I may be , or have been before ,
To mingle with the Universe , and feel
What I can her express , yet cannot all conceal .
У6: There is a nice poem by J. Thomson :
Give a man a horse he can ride ,
Give a man a boat he can sail ;
And his rank and wealth , his strength and health ,
On sea nor shore shall fail.
Give a man a pipe he can smoke ,
Give a man a book he can read ;
And his home is bright with calm delight ,
Thought the room be poor indeed .
Give a man a girl he can love ,
As I , or my love , love thee ;
And his heart is great with the pulse of Fate
At home , on land , on sea .
3.Заключительная часть:
- Подведение итогов , оценивание учащихся :
П: Thank you very much . I have heard wonderful poems today . I suppose you are very fond of reading . Books enrich our own experience with that of other people and so broaden our outlook . Books are the memory of mankind which retains wisdom and experience of the past . An active spiritual life is not possible without constant reading . Books are indispensable source of information and education . Loss of books would mean for humanity loss of all intellectual life.
