Bonfire Night.

In Britain, people light bonfires, burn “guys” and let off fireworks on 5th November.  Traditionally this is done to remember the time when Guy Fawkes tried (but failed) to destroy the British Houses of Parliament with gunpowder1 in the 17th century. This night is also called Guy Fawkes Night.
Guido Fawkes was an Englishman who, in popular legend, tried to blow up
2 the Houses of Parliament with barrels of gunpowder. He was caught, arrested, and finally hanged. His failure is celebrated with fireworks and bonfires on which pictures or figures of Guy Fawkes are burnt.

400 years ago, Guy Fawkes was a conspirator in the "Gunpowder Plot3" of 1605 in England. He and his people decided to blow up the both Houses of Parliament in London and kill King James I, and managed to hide several barrels of gunpowder in the basement of the Parliament. But one of the conspirators was frightened and he wrote a letter to his friend who was a Member of Parliament. This man showed the letter to the king.

The plot was discovered at the eleventh hour; some of the plotters escaped, the unlucky Fawkes was taken in chains to the Tower of London. He was put to death.

To this day, one of the ceremonies that accompany the opening of a new session of parliament is the searching of the basement, by a bunch4 of men in funny hats. Besides, the figure of poor Guy Fawkes is burned every November 5th on bonfires all over Britain. They sell a lot of fireworks too, and children can often be seen in the streets saying “Penny for the guy”. If they collect enough money they can buy some fireworks.

As any other British holiday this one has traditional food: toffee apples, baked potatoes and black peas.

  1. Listening.

You know, how many countries so many customs. What national Russian holidays do you know? Do you know any Altayan festivals? Have you ever taken part in it? I suggest you listening to a description of Altayan holiday -   Chaga-Bairam. Don’t forget to make notes while listening.

Script.

This festival is celebrated not only in Altay, but in India and Tibet. The aim of it is to unite people, keep traditions and relative ties. Chaga Bairam is held in February or March. The date depends on the period of the new moon. Sometimes it is called “white festival” and it celebrates the beginning of New Year. It starts early in the morning, with the first sun rays. The oldest and honorable men make a bonfire, say prayers and give special food “syrchic and talkan”to the spirits of nature.   Then they go to a sacred tree to tie ribbons as a sign of respect and gratitude to Altyan spirits.

Families cook traditional meat dishes and “kocho”-rich clear soup. Later different national sports and cultural events are held.

Chaga Bairam is not just a reason  to see the old year off and to meet the new one, but it is an exciting journey to Altayan history and culture.

  1. Speaking.

There are so many holidays in Russia, think a bit, choose a holiday you like, fill in the table and be ready to speak on it. But do not tell it’s name, let your classmates to guess it.

Home task:

You’ve got a letter from your English pen friend Nick. He is doing a project about holidays of different countries. Write him a letter describing some national Russian or Altayan holiday.
