It's very important to know traditions and customs of different people. It will help us to know more about the history and life of different nations and countries. In Britain traditions play a more important part in the life of the people than in other countries, because Englishmen are proud of their traditions and carefully keep them up.

The aim and the purpose of my research are : - to learn and find out more about traditions, customs and British holidays . - to demonstrate what holidays and traditions Russia and the UK countries have in common and what are the differences between them. - to activate and increase the vocabulary on the theme ” Holidays ” .

Christmas is celebrated all over the world and no other holiday has developed such a great number of customs and symbols. The Christmas story comes from the Bible . For most British families, this is the most important festival of the year .

Most families decorate their houses with coloured paper or holly, and they usually have a Christmas tree . It is decorated with coloured lights and beautiful toys. In the evening the family will sit down to a big turkey dinner followed by Christmas pudding . Then they may watch the Queen on television as she delivers her traditional congratulations to the United Kingdom.

There are a lot of traditions connected with Christmas , but perhaps the most important one is giving presents. Children hope that Santa Claus will come and bring them presents.

Another old tradition in Britain is Christmas mistletoe . People put a piece of this green plant with its white berries over a door. Many people think that mistletoe brings good luck.

In Russia Christmas is celebrated in a grand fashion . People take part in all-night Mass in Cathedrals . I n Russia, many people don’t eat meat, eggs or milk from a few weeks before Christmas and it is customary to fast until after the first church service on Christmas Eve . The most important food is a special porridge called “ kutya ” . It is made of wheat or other grains which symbolize hope, honey and poppy seeds, which ensure happiness and success .

As you can see, Christmas is a much brighter, more interesting and popular holiday in the United Kingdom than in Russia .

To conclude, I want to say : It is essential for a nation to stick to its roots and to remember its past. And If we want new generations to know the Russian history and culture it is important to start educating children in families when they are young.
