Вступительное слово учителя

        Сегодня мы проводим занятие- встречу, посвященную великому шотландскому поэту Р.Бернсу. 21 июля 2011 года исполнилось 215 лет со дня смерти поэта. Нас разделяют два века, но поэзия Р.Бернса, жившего в 18 веке созвучна нашему времени. В процессе подготовки этого занятия учащимися была проделана большая поисково- исследовательская работа со словом, и сегодня мы увидим результат погружения в тексты и атмосферу 18 века. Учащимся, присутствующим на нашей встрече в качестве наблюдателей, предлагается: 1) определить, каким был Р.Бернс как личность; 2) проследить каковы особенности эпохи 18 века; 3) назвать традиции шотландского народа.

        Boys and girls! You are invited to the party devoted to the greatest Scottish poet Robert Burns. During this party you will learn some facts from the poet’s biography, listen to his poems, sing and listen to some songs by R.Burns. Your main task is to listen attentively because at the end of the party you will be asked to express your impressions of the party. Try to understand what  R.Burns  was a personality, determine the characteristic features of the 18th century and national traditions of the Scottish people.         Robert Burns, the Bard of Scotland (1759- 1796)

Leader: We begin our school party dedicated to Scotland’s greatest poet, Robert Burns. R.Burns was the most democratic poet of the 18th century. His birthday is celebrated in Scotland as a national holiday. Burns is very popular in our country. His first poems were translated into Russian at the close of the 18th century. Our people admire R.Burns’s poems and songs in the original and in the wonderful translation of Samuel Marshak.

        Самуил Яковлевич Маршак познакомил нашего читателя со стихами великого шотландского поэта. Сам он говорил: «Я счастлив, что на мою долю выпала честь дать моим современникам и соотечественникам наиболее полное собрание переводов Бернса». Александр Трифонович Твардовский так оценил его переводы: «Маршак сделал Бернса русским, оставив его шотландцем». Стихи Бернса в переводе С.Я.Маршака мы воспринимаем, как стихи своего современника.

Pupil 1: Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet was born on January 25, 1759 in a small clay cottage at Alloway, in Ayrshire, Scotland. His father, William Burns, was a poor farmer. He built this small clay cottage with his own hands. There were seven children in the family and Robert was the eldest. His father knew the value of a good education and he tried to give his children the best education he could afford. Robert was sent to school at the age of six, but as his father could not pay for the two sons, Robert and his brother Gilbert attended the school in turn. When not at school the boys helped their father with his work in the fields.

        Pupil 2: But soon the teacher left and Burns’s father and his four neighbours invited a young school teacher John Murdoch to teach their boys. When Murdoch left the poet’s father taught the children himself. Reading and writing, arithmetic, English grammar, history, literature, French and Latin- this was R. Burns’s education.

        Pupil 3: William Burns died in February 1784. Later R.Burns wrote about his father in his poem “My father was  a farmer” – “Был честный фермер мой отец”

And carefully he bred me                        Но от наследников своих

In decency and order,O.                        Он требовал порядка.

He bade me act a manly part                        Учил достоинство хранить,

For without an honest manly heart                Страшнее –чести изменить,

        Pupil 4: Robert’s mother knew many Scottish songs and ballads and often sang them to her son in his childhood. Her mother’s friend Betty told Robert many fantastic tales about devils, fairies and witches. Burns’s mother died in 1820. She lived long and enjoyed the fame of her poet son.

        Pupil 5: Robert Burns became fond of reading. He read whatever he could lay in his hands on. His favourite writers were Shakespeare, Sterne, Smollet and Robert Fergusson, a talanted Scottish poet (1750- 1774). Fergusson’s tragic fate deeply touched Burns. Burns devoted many poems to Fergusson. In 1787 Robert Burns errected a monument over the grave of this Scottish poet Robert Fergusson at his own expense when the book of his poems was published.

        Pupil 6: Robert Burns began to write poetry when he was  fifteen. He composed verses to the melodies of old folk songs, which he had admired from his early childhood. He sang of the woods, fields and wonderful valleys of his native land.

Pupil 7: After William Burns’s death the family moved to Mossgiel where Robert and his brother Gilbert rented a small farm.The young men worked hard, but the land gave poor crops. The family began to live worse. Just at that time Burns fell in love with Jean Armour and was going to marry her but the girl’s father did not want to have a poor peasant for his son- in – law.

Pupil 8: Seeing that there was no way for a poor peasant to earn his living in Scotland Burns decided to sail for Jamaica. To get some money for his passage he published some of his poems. Six hundred copies of “Poems chiefly in the Scottish dialect” were printed in Kilmanock in July 1786. Their success was complete. The edition was quickly sold out and Robert Burns became well known and popular.

Pupil 9: Instead of going to Jamaica Burns went to Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. He had received a letter from several Edinburgh scholars who praised his verses and invited him to come to the capital. In Edinburgh Burns was welcomed as one of the “wonders of the world”. A new and enlarged edition of his poems was the result. But soon Edinburgh society grew tired of him and forgot about the poet. Robert left Edinburgh and returned to his native village with the money enough to buy a farm and marry Jean Armour, his “Bonnie Jean”. Burns devoted to Jean many beautiful poems such as “I love my Jean”, “It is Na, Jean. Thy Bonnie face” and many others.

Pupil 10: Though Burns’s poems were very popular he always remained poor. He worked hard on his farm. But in 1791 Burns went bankrupt and had to sell his farm. He became a customs officer in the town of Dumfries. The work was very hard and it destroyed the poet’s health. He died in poverty at the age of 37. Burns was buried in Dumfries. His funeral was attended by a crowd of ten thousand.They were the common Scottish people whom he had loved and for whom he had written his poems and songs.In the picture you can see the monument to Robert Burns at Alloway in Ayrshire.

Leader: The poetry and songs of Robert Burns are famous all over the world, Burns is very dear to us. He was a democratic poet. His sympathy was with the poor, he hated the rich and hoped for a better future for the people, for equality and justice for all. Now you will hear his most popular poems. Listen to his poem “Is there for honest poverty”

Pupil 11:

Is there, for honest poverty;

That hangs his head, and all that?

The coward- slave, we pass him by,

We dare be poor for all that!

The ranks is but the guinea- stamp,

        Leader: In many of his poems R.Burns called for freedom. He wrote many poems about the struggle for freedom. Listen to the poem “The Tree of Liberty”

Heard ye of the tree of France,
I watna what's the name of it.
Around it all the patriots dance,
Weel Europe kens the fame of it.
It stands where ance the Bastille stood,
A prison built by kings, man,
When superstition's hellish brood

The sword would help to make a plough,
The din of war wad cease man.

  Leader: Burns had a deep love for Scotland,  its history and folklore. His favourite national hero was William Wallace, the leader of the uprising against the English opressor. In many of his poems Burns sings the glorious past of his native land. Burns also sings the beauty of his native land. Listen to the poem “My Heart’s in the Highlands”

Pupil 14:  My Heart’s in the Highlands.

My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart’s in the Highlands, a- chasing the deer;
A- chasing the wild deer, and following the roe -

        Leader: Robert Burns wrote some anticlerical satires. The satires were laughed at. Here is one of them. “The Parson’s looks”

        Leader: Burns was a remarkable lyric poet. In his lyrical poems Burns glorified true love and friendship. Listen to the poem “Of all the airts the wind can blow”

For there the bonnie lassie lives

The lassie I love best;

Leader: Robert Burns’s poems and verses inspired Beethoven, Shuhmann, Mendelson and other composers who wrote music to them. The best known cycle of songs to Robert Burns’s verses were composed in Russia by Georgi Sviridov. The tunes to R.Burns’s songs were written by D. Shostakovich, Nickolai Myaskovsky, Yuri Levitin, Andrei Petrov. Listen to the song “Моей душе покоя нет” from the film «Служебный роман». Music by A.Petrov, words by Robert Burns in the translation of S.Marshak.(Звучит пластинка) Не правда ли, что поэзия человека, жившего в 18 веке, созвучна нашему времени.

Leader: And now let’s sing the most popular song by R.Burns “For Auld Lang Syne” together. It has now become a parting song at any party or meeting of friends. (магнитофонная запись)

I think that you’ve enjoyed the poems by Robert Burns and had the opportunity to penetrate the atmosphere of the 18th century, I’m sure, you have a wish to express your feelings and opinion of the poetry. Учащиеся: Robert Burns is Scotland’s greatest poet. He was the most democratic poet of the 18th century. His birthday on the 25th of January is celebrated in Scotland as a national holiday. I want to thank my schoolmates. I enjoyed this party very much. I have learned many interesting facts of R.Burns himself and his poetry.
