On the 9th of May 1945 the Soviet Army and its allies completely defeated the German fascists and the Second World War and Great Patriotic War ended. This year we'll celebrate the 53th anniversary of the great event. A magnificent memorial on Poklonnaya Gora has been built to commemorate the victory. Many veterans take part in the military parade and lay flowers on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. All stand in silence for a minute. Radio and television broadcast popular war songs and films all day long. A lot of guests from different countries of the world come to Moscow to participate in the celebrations.

(Текст читается дважды)

P9: Oh, of course we make necessary arrangements. We decorate a fir-tree with tinsels, baubles and fairy lights. We prepare presents.

P10: And my mum cooks dinner for the whole family and we make fancy costumes and put them on.

P11: We write and send beautiful New Year postcards. And present handsels to our relatives.

P12: At midnight we set off firecrackers.

P8: What kind of holiday is it?

P7: I think it is a family holiday. And often I'd like to be a small child at that day and wait for Father Frost and his present.

P8: As for me, I like this holiday too. I enjoy the atmosphere of this holiday and of course I like presents.

P2: And what about other holidays?

P6: On the 7th of January we have a holy day Christmas. It is celebrated in honour of the birth of Christ. Many people go to church and attend a service this day.

P7: I don't think so. It's a religious holiday.

P9: And in our family it is celebrated. And we have a lot of fun.

P10: The next holiday is Epiphany. Just a moment, what «Epiphany» means?

P1 : It is a Christian holy day in memory of coming of the three kings from the East to see the baby Jesus (the Orthodox Church celebrates it on January. 19).

P3: The days from Christmas to Epiphany are called Christmas-tide.

  • Can you tell me what did people use to do and what do they do nowadays at Christmas-tide. Please, refer to word combinations on p. 103.

P5: Of course they rode troika and played snowballs.

P6: They sang carols and made a snowman.

P7: They told fortunes, especially girls.

P9: And we tell fortunes even nowadays. It is magic!

  • Children, look at this picture by the Russian artist Kustodiev. Can you guess what holiday is it?

P4: I can be mistaken, but it is Shrovetide.

  • No, you are right.

P4: It has deep roots. It is Farewell-to-Winter Festival. People say goodbye to winter and welcome spring.

P10: I know that on this holiday people cook pirozhki, pancakes and eat them with smetana, butter and caviar.

P5: I think that in the past people went to fail's. There they climbed a pole for a gift.
