Exercise 1

Some people care about their, health, others don't: they have bad health habits.

  1. What good and bad health habits can have? Make a list.
  2. Compare your list with your friend's list.

Exercise 2

There is a popular proverb that goes, "Eat to live not live to eat". People need food to stay alive. But sometimes we can overdo it and end up "living to eat". What about you? Complete these healthy eating tips using much, many, little, a lot of.

  • Too        food makes you thin.
  • Too        sweets are bad for you, especially for you teeth.
  • Sleeping too        or too        can make you nervous and restless.
  •         fruit and vegetables keep you healthy.
  • Walking        makes you feet.
  • Eat_______high fat food and_______fibre.

2. Исполнительный этап (while - activity).

Exercise 1.

Our health depends on many things: the foods we eat, our good or bad habits, our physical activity.

Eating habits vary from country to country. They depend on people's way of life, economics, health service, people's attitude and many other things. What is your idea about eating habits in Russia? Complete the information using much, little, many, few, more, less, fewer.

Since the 1970s eating habits in Russia have changed.        people eat        fat

and        vegetables and fruits. They eat        whole-meal products.

people now believe in dieting. Fat is widely recognized to be one of the main

causes of obesity (being too fat) and heart disease.        high fibre foods and low

fat foods can now be found in all shops.

          Exercise 2.

Do the British care about their health? Do they prefer healthy food? S. Maugham recommended eating three English breakfasts a day. Why? What is traditional English breakfast? Do the British people follow S. Mangham's advice? Guess what it is and fill in the missing words.

The English breakfast is a traditional full, cooked breakfast with a hot dish such as

b        and e        . Then t        t and c                 or t        . There is a high fat

content in b        and e        and not many people eat them now. A lighter breakfast

meal is more popular.

          Exercise 3.

Are there any traditional breakfast foods in our country? What does your family eat for breakfast? What food do you eat for special occasions (New Year, Easter Sunday, ets.)?

Using the article about the English breakfast as a model write about a traditional meal in our country.

            Exercise 4.

Are the Russians alike or different from the British in health habits? Make a chart.

            Exercise 5.

Some teenagers worry too much about their weight and use a calorie-controlled diet. What is calorie-controlled diet?

Replace the underlined words with antonyms to get the correct answer.

Many people in GB now think (less) about their health. They eat a lot (high-fat) food and (less) fibre. Fat is thought to be the cause of (health). Besides, people believe that they should exercise (less) not to be (slim). Some people have started counting the calories they eat every day. So that they can try to take in (more) calories and (gain) weight. This is called a calorie-controlled diet. Special food with (more) calories for slimmers is produced now in GB.

Exercise 6.

A lot of British teenagers try to lose their weight. Some of them even join different clubs What do they do it for? Here is what Erica Marshall says about it.

1). Complete her story with reflexive pronouns.

I go to Weight Losers now. I'm trying to lose weight. I have to force        to eat

the right food. My friends don't think I'm fat. "You'll make        ill," they tell

me. But it's doing me good. Lots of teenagers go to the club. They're all trying to

lose weight or keep        slim. We all weigh        on the scales and write

down our weight. Yesterday one girl was one kilo heavier than the week before.

She said she couldn't stop          eating cakes. The teacher said, "You must

control          ." Robert Anderson goes too. He's losing weight. He's very

pleased with         .

7.  Exercise 7.

It has been known since ancient times that there is a link between pollution and poor                             health.

Complete these facts from scientific reports with the right form of the verbs below.

  1. Many plants and animals        .
  2. The link between pollution and people's health          since early

times.

  1. Official measures        against smoking in many countries.
  2. Many local health services          public campaign to prevent

young people from the habit of smoking.

  1. Sales of high fat products        for the last ten years.
  2. A lot of plants          as natural medicine. People

garlic as an antibiotic for centuries.

  1. A lot of people          to express their attitude toward

vegetarianism.

  1. According to the Nutrition Foundation milk and milk products

a major source of calcium and protein.

Report        Disappear        Recognize        Run        Take

Ask        Decrease        Use        Know

8.  Exercise 8

Was life better a hundred years ago? What do you think? Consider these aspects: pollution, water, cities, diseases and length of life.

People like to think that life was better in the past. The air was cleaner, the water was purer, life was safer and, certainly, it was cheaper. But were the good old days really so good? Probably not. Many of today's problems existed in the past, and there were other problems then that we rarely face today.

Pollution was a very important problem for city governments in the last century, particularly with regards to water supplies. They had some idea that water could be polluted, but they didn't know how. Trying to get pure water was a big problem. The cities of the 19th century were dirty. There was a lot of pollution from horses and other animals. And people were careless about throwing out litter. Communicable diseases were a big problem. There was malaria, cholera and typhoid. A lot of children died when they were very young. While there were no cars to kill people, there were many fatalities and injuries caused by runaway horses.

The old days were not as good as some people think they were.

Different celebrations can inject both fun and danger. Test your knowledge of drinking. Choose True or False for each statement and then read the answers.

Quick - Quiz:

  1. Alcohol can help you relax and feel more confident and sociable.
  • True        * False
  1. You're more attractive to the opposite sex after a few drinks.
  • True        * False
  1. A cup of coffee and a cold shower can help you sober up.
  • True        * False
  1. Girls usually get drunk faster than young men.
  • True        * False
  1. Mixing drinks increase the risk of getting drunk more quickly - and having accidents or getting into fights.
  • True        * False
  1. If you are a teenager and drink too much, you may get stupid.
  • True        * False
  1. The best hangover cure is hair of the dog - a bit more alcohol the next day
  • True        * False
  1. Drinking too much alcohol ('overdosing') may be fatal. You can even die.
  • True        * False
  1. If you're out drinking with your mates, you've got to keep up with everyone else.
  • True        * False
  1. The         more you drink, the fatter you'll become.

*True                           * Falsе

      11.  What I do with my time is business. If I get a bit drunk, it will hurt no one

             but myself

                                *True                   *False

  1. Drinking may make you feel relaxed, but it can also make you take foolish risks. You are more likely to do something stupid when you are drunk.
  2. After a few drinks you might feel more attractive, but it's nothing but an illusion. The sight of a person with a silly smile, zigzag walking and slurred speech will have the opposite effect.
  3. Forget        this myth. Alcohol is absorbed into your bloodstream within a few minutes and is carried to all parts of the body including the brain. Only time can remove alcohol from your bloodstream. Black coffee, cold showers and fresh air won't sober you up. You should, however, drink as much water as possible to clear the body. Having something to eat before going to a party is definitely a good idea.
  4. Women         get drunk faster than men. It has been proved that it's very difficult for a woman to stop drinking. So it's best not to start.

5.  It's true, mixing drinks increases the risk of getting drunk more quickly - and having accidents or getting into fights.

  1. Pupils        who drink heavily sometimes joke that they are killing a few brain cells. New research suggests that this is not funny. Teenagers who drink too much may lose as much as 10% of their brainpower - the difference between passing and failing in school... and life.
  2. The only real hangover cure is time.

8.  Overdosing may make you lose consciousness. Overdosing can also cause alcoholic poisoning, which again can be fatal. Drinking too much alcohol over many years can lead to serious liver, heart and stomach problems.

9.  If you're out drinking with your mates, it's silly to think you've got to keep up with everyone else. If you're in control of your own life, you decide how much you drink, not anyone else.

10.  Alcohol is high on calories, so you may put on weight.

11.  If you drink, everyone around you is affected. Family, friends, neighbours, everyonе.

Each man is a creator of a temple called the human body. A human body is a perfectly organized creation with millions of blood vessels. It has an extremely powerful engine that pumps gallons of blood every day. A human brain is a fantastic mild machine.

Nowadays people are getting more and more concerned about the food they eat, about the air they breathe and the way they look and feel. They begin to comprehend that staying active as you get older gives you more energy and helps to stave off illness. Nowadays we are offered a wide range of sport facilities to achieve general fitness.

From my own experience I can say that some of my friends are simply hooked on aerobics, shaping, stretching and bodybuilding. I must admit that a professional sportsman is always a pleasure to look at: he doesn't smoke or drink alcohol, he keeps to a healthy diet avoiding junk food and always takes regular hours. Absolute beginners should start with some basic mobility exercises to get them moving. All sports should be made a part of a weekly routine. However, we shouldn't forget that it might be appropriate to get the doctor's approval before. In fact everybody chooses an activity that appeals more to him.

I would also like to draw jour attention to the fact that recent research shows that just an hour's brisk walk every day maintains perfect fitness and wards off such diseases as asthma, back aches and insomnia.

As a teenager I'd say that the greatest way to combine pleasure and fitness is dancing. Pretty much like jogging or hiking it is one of the best ways to boost heart, muscles and lungs. It improves self-control and coordination. Doctors say that a twenty minutes session will give the heart a safe level of protection. So all these exercises combined with healthy will inevitably provide a person with a healthy body and a peace of mind.

  1. Answer the questions:
  • What is a human body?
  • What things are people getting more and more concerned nowadays?
  • Why  is a professional sportsman a pleasure to look at?

2.        Circle the right answer.

  1. Nowadays people
  1. eat much food than before
  2. do not concern about what they eat or drink at all
  3. are very fond of junk food
  4. are anxious to eat healthy food
  1. I can say
  1. people do not practice sport nowadays
  2. a professional sportsman always keeps to a healthy diet
  3. people are hooked on risky sports
  4. I'm a real sportsman
  1. Absolute beginners should
  1. jog twice a day
  2. choose swimming at first
  3. hire a coach
  4. start with some basic exercises
  1. The best way to combine pleasure and fitness is
  1. going to discos
  2. doing what you want
  3. taking part in the Olympics
  4. dancing
  1. Do you agree or not? Comment on the following statements.
  1. A professional sportsman presents a dull picture.
  2. Absolute beginners should start with risky sports.
  3. You should walk every day to keep fit.
  4. If your body is sound your mind will be sound too.
  1. What do you think? Give a reason for your opinion.
  1. Nowadays people are getting more and more concerned about food .
  2. All sports should be made a part of a weekly routine.
  3. Sports usually ward off diseases.
  4. Sport provides a person with a healthy body and a sound mind.
  1. List all the problems touched upon in the text
  2. Comment on the following quotations.

" Health is better than wealth."  John Ray

"Walking is the best possible exercise"  Thomas Jefferson

  1. Write a paragraph on the topic. Use some extra material.

3. Завершающий этап (post – activity).

Conclusion:

Health exists when there is a balance between interdependent of the physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social dimensions.

Учащимся предлагается подобрать на карточках определения к понятиям:

  • Physical health
  •  Mental health
  • Social health

Physical health - is a condition of your body.

Mental health - is the way you feel about yourself and how you handle your problems.

Social health - is the way you build your relationships and establish contacts with people.

Каждой группе учащихся предоставляется возможность высказаться.

In the past being healthy meant not to be sick. Today people are becoming aware of a more complete idea of health.

В завершающем этапе работы над темой "HEALTHY LIVING GUIDE” учащимся предлагается разработать проект по теме. Проекты могут быть как групповыми, так и индивидуальными. Здесь приводится пример проекта, сделанного группой учащихся.

Smoking is awful and I personally can’t stick the smell. As for me, I wouldn’t just ban smoking in public but I would ban it everywhere in every country. (Olya S)

oOO

Smoking isn’t cool. It’s stupid! It can kill us. I strongly believe it should be banned.

(Sasha V.)

I have  friends who smoke. Sure, I don’t want them do it, but they do anyway. I don’t think that banning it in public will work at all. People will do want they want when they want

(Irina N.)

want wantwant.

I think people should stop smoking because it gets young people into smoking and it's not good for the environment.

(Alyona K.)

If people want to kill themselves, let them. But I don’t see why we should let them kill others?

(Roma P.)

Yeah - it should be banned. Smoking is a form of slow suicide. It doesn't matter when you start; you can always stop. It's a question of will power.

(Stepan K.)

I think that smoking should be banned in public because you are more likely to die of passive smoking than actual smoking!

(Ivan T.)
