The Geographical Position of America - (Слайд № 35)

The United States of America is situated in the central part of the North American continent. The total area of the USA is over 9 million square kilometers. The western coast of the USA is washed by the Pacific Ocean and its eastern coast is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. In the North the USA borders on Canada. In the South it shares borders with Mexico. The population of the USA is more than 236 million people.

The Geographical Position of Tatarstan - (Слайд № 37)

Tatarstan is situated in the central part of the Russian Federation. There are many rivers in Tatarstan; the largest ones are the Volga River, the Kazanka River and the Kama River. Tatarstan borders on such republics as Mari El, Chuvashiya, Udmurtiya and Bashkortostan. The population of Tatarstan is more than 3 million people.

The discovery of America - (Слайд № 38, 39)

In our days everybody knows what the word America means. It is the name of the country - The United States of America - or just America. And then America is the name of the 2 continents – North America and South America. Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. We don’t know much about this man. He was born in Italy but lived in Spain for a long time. He was a seaman and made many sea voyages. In 1492 the King and the Queen of Spain gave him money to go to India. He decided to sail west. After sailing 4000 miles, he reached some land.  Columbus thought it must be India but it was not. It was a new continent America – Central America in fact.

The history of Kazan - (Слайд № 40, 41)

Kazan is the capital of Tatarstan. The city was founded as a fortress by the Bulgar tsar Ibragim in 1177. There is no common opinion on the original of the name of the city Kazan. Some historians connect this name with the meaning of the word Cauldron because the place where the city is situated has a Cauldron shape. But the others connect it with the name of the river Kaz-gan. In the 16 century Kazan became the capital of the Kazan Khanate. In 1552 Ivan the Terrible conquered Kazan. The town was almost destroyed by fire. In 1556 the construction of the White Wall Kremlin began, and soon Kazan became a great center of trade and crafts. In the 19 century Kazan was formed as a single whole.

American Symbols - (Слайд № 42, 44)

The American flag is often called The Stars and The Stripes. There are 3 colors on the flag of the USA – red, white and blue. As there are 50 states in the United States, there are 50 stars on the American flag – one star for each state. The American flag has 13 stripes – 7 red stripes and 6 white stripes. There is one stripe for each of the first 13 colonies of the United States.

The eagle became the official national symbol of the country in 1782. It has an olive branch (a symbol of peace) and arrows (symbols of strength).

Tatar Symbols - (Слайд № 43, 45)

The flag of Tatarstan has 3 stripes on it. The upper stripe is green, the middle stripe is white and the red stripe is at the bottom. These colors are symbolic in Tatarstan - green color means nature and youth, white color – honest and peace and red color – power and life.

The modern coat of arms of Tatarstan has a white-winged panther with a big shield on one of his side.

The American Statue of Liberty - (Слайд № 46)

One of the most famous symbols of the USA is the Statue of Liberty. France gave the Statue to America in 1884 as a symbol of friendship. The Statue is in New York on Liberty Island. It is one of the first things people see when they arrive in New York by sea.

Suyumbike’s tower - (Слайд № 47, 48)

Suyumbike’s tower is the main symbol of Kazan. The 58 meters, high redbrick tower has 7 tiers. According to the legend, Ivan the Terrible learned about the tsarina’s Suyumbike beauty and sent his matchmakers to Kazan. But Suyumbike refused the Russian tsar. Then Ivan the Terrible went to Kazan and conquered it. Suyumbike agreed to marry the Terrible but on one condition – He was to build the highest tower in Kazan in 7 days. By the end of the 7-th day the tower had been built. Suyumbike rose to the top of it and threw herself upon the earth. In memory of this event people called the tower after Suyumbike.

Dialogue – American and Tatar holidays - (Слайд № 49, 50)

-    Hello, I am… I am from Kazan, Tatarstan. And what about you?

  • Hi, my name is… I am from America.
  • From America? Great! I have collected information about this country, its traditions and holidays. Can you tell me about one of your favorite holidays?
  • OK. I shall tell you about Christmas. Have you heard anything about this holiday?
  • Well, I know that Americans prepare turkey for Christmas.
  • You are right. Turkey is the symbol of Christmas. People come together for this day. They decorate the New Year Tree, get a lot of presents and wish Merry Christmas to each other.
  • Oh, how interesting! I think it is a really wonderful holiday.
  • And now it is your turn to tell me about one of the tatar holidays.
  • My favorite holiday is Saban-tuy. It is the plough holiday. It holds in summer when the ploughmen finish all their spring agricultural work.
  • And what do the people do on this holiday?
  • As usual, they play different games; compete with each other, watch horse riding.
  • Wow, it is a very good holiday! Maybe some when I shall be able to enjoy this holiday, too.

Traditional American clothes - (Слайд № 51)

One of the traditions from the Wild West is a cowboy clothes. As cowboys spent much time outdoors, they usually wore hats, boots and jeans. Hats protected their faces and eyes from the hot sun and boots made riding a horse easier. As for special clothes – strong trousers called jeans, a tailor Levi Strauss made them in the middle of the 19-th century in the city of San Francisco. Very soon cowboys started to wear jeans. Now people wear jeans in America and all over the world.

Traditional American food - (Слайд № 53, 54)

The USA is most famous for Fast Foods. The first Fast Food restaurants served hamburgers, but now they serve other kinds of food too. Inside there is often a salad bar, where you can help yourself to as much salad as you want. Americans eat a lot and most restaurants will put a lot of food on your plate. But if you can t finish it all, they will give you a doggy bag and you can take it home. Most Americans now try to have a light breakfast but on weekends a large late breakfast is often eaten with family or friends.

National Tatar clothes - (Слайд № 52)

National Tatar clothes are closely connected with the history of the country, with people s traditions and customs. The National Tatar Woman s costume is very smart. It consists of a beautiful one-color dress with an apron. Tatar women also wear wonderfully embroidered boots on their foot. In our days Tatar people wear their National clothes only on holidays or different performances.

National Tatar food - (Слайд № 55, 56)

Tatar cooking traditions are very old and connected with the history of their people. In old times Tatar people ate rice, different kinds of nuts, vegetables and dry fruit. Then they started breeding the cattle and using its meat as a food. Today Tatar people prefer eating different sorts of soup, porridge, meat and potatoes, and cakes with sweet and flavorless fillings. On holidays they traditionally prepare «бэлиш», «эчпочмак», «кыстыбый», and «губадия».

The Great People of America - (Слайд № 57, 58)

Samuel Clemens (this was Mark Twain’s real name) was born in Florida, Missouri. The Clemens family was poor. His mother expected him “to get on”, but he didn’t. In New Orleans, he got his big chance to be a river pilot. In 1861, when the Civil War broke out, Mark Twain left for the West (Nevada) and became a miner searching for silver, but he failed to become rich. Soon he began to work for the Virginia City paper as a reporter using the name “Mark Twain”. The story which first made him famous was the Jumping Frog, published in 1865 in the New York Saturday Press. In 1876 he published his world famous book “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and 8 years later he finished his masterpiece “Huckleberry Finn”.
